Warhorse Studios released Kingdom Come: Deliverance on 13 February 2018, set in Bohemia in 1403 with no magic, no dragons and a map built from real places. You play Henry, a blacksmith's son from Skalitz, after Cuman raiders in Sigismund's pay burn the town and kill his parents. All 17 skills level only through use, and saving outside a bed normally costs a bottle of Saviour Schnapps.
Combat in Kingdom Come: Deliverance rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.
Core Combat Mechanics
1. Skills level only through use
Seven combat skills cover Sword, Mace, Axe, Bow, Unarmed, Defence and Warfare, while ten non combat skills cover Alchemy, Herbalism, Hunting, Horsemanship, Lockpicking, Maintenance, Pickpocketing, Reading, Stealth and Drinking. Each rises only when you perform that action, and perks unlock at thresholds such as level 4, 8 and 12.
Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.
2. Combat rose and Master Strikes
Attacks are aimed at directions on a combat rose, and blocking at the exact instant an opponent begins a swing triggers a Master Strike that counterattacks automatically. Captain Bernard at the Rattay combat arena is the only trainer who teaches Master Strikes, combos and feints.
Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.
3. Saviour Schnapps save system
Sleeping in a bed you own saves, and quitting saves, but a mid quest save requires drinking Saviour Schnapps. Brewing your own through Alchemy is by far the cheapest supply and removes the pressure of rationing saves before every risky fight.
Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.
4. Hands on alchemy brewing
Potions are made physically at an alchemy bench: read the recipe from the book, grind or chop the herbs, boil for a counted number of hourglass turns and pour into the phial. Higher Alchemy skill forgives sloppy timing and eventually lets Henry brew straight from memory.
Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.
5. Reputation, speech and charisma
Dialogue options are gated behind Speech and Charisma, and both are affected by whether Henry is washed, well dressed and wearing appropriate clothes for the audience. Reputation is tracked separately per settlement, so a theft in Rattay does not instantly ruin your standing in Sasau.
Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.
How These Mechanics Combine
Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:
Skills level only through use + Combat rose and Master Strikes
Seven combat skills cover Sword, Mace, Axe, Bow, Unarmed, Defence and Warfare, while ten non combat skills cover Alchemy, Herbalism, Hunting, Horsemanship, Lockpicking, Maintenance, Pickpocketing, Reading, Stealth and Drinking. When combined with Combat rose and Master Strikes, attacks are aimed at directions on a combat rose, and blocking at the exact instant an opponent begins a swing triggers a master strike that counterattacks automatically. This combination is the core of every effective build.
Saviour Schnapps save system + Hands on alchemy brewing
Sleeping in a bed you own saves, and quitting saves, but a mid quest save requires drinking Saviour Schnapps. Paired with Hands on alchemy brewing, potions are made physically at an alchemy bench: read the recipe from the book, grind or chop the herbs, boil for a counted number of hourglass turns and pour into the phial. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.
Reputation, speech and charisma as a Multiplier
Dialogue options are gated behind Speech and Charisma, and both are affected by whether Henry is washed, well dressed and wearing appropriate clothes for the audience. Reputation is tracked separately per settlement, so a theft in Rattay does not instantly ruin your standing in Sasau. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Reputation, speech and charisma optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques
Damage Optimization
- Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities
- Exploit Skills level only through use for maximum damage windows
- Chain Combat rose and Master Strikes and Saviour Schnapps save system for combo damage
- Use Hands on alchemy brewing to create openings
Survivability
- Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
- Go to Captain Bernard at the Rattay arena before the main quest pushes you into real fights. He is the only character who teaches Master Strikes, combos and feints, and Master Strikes alone change the difficulty of the whole game.
- Position using Skills level only through use to control spacing
- Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort
Boss Combat
Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.
- Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
- Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
- Build preparation: Swap gear and equipment for specific fights when needed
Common Combat Mistakes
- Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
- Ignoring Combat rose and Master Strikes: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
- Wrong equipment for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
- Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
- Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Rattay but will get you killed in Ledetchko.
