Metro 2033 Redux is 4A Games' 2014 rebuild of the 2010 original, moved onto the engine used for Metro: Last Light. It follows Artyom out of the VDNKh station and across a post-nuclear Moscow underground of 7 chapters and 27 levels, ending at the Ostankino Tower. The Redux version added two play styles: Spartan, which hands you enough ammunition to fight, and Survival, which starves you the way the 2010 original did. Military grade rounds are both the best ammunition in the game and the currency you buy everything with, which turns every trade into a decision about whether you would rather be rich or well armed.

Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

  • Straightforward gearing path
  • Works in all content types

Cons:

  • Lower peak damage than S-tier
  • Needs specific gear to reach full potential

Key MechanicMoral points and the two endingsThe game silently tracks moral points for things it never tells you about: listening to full conversations, giving military grade rounds to beggars, exploring optional rooms, sparing enemies who are not shooting at you.

How to Play Heavy assault loadout

Heavy assault loadout focuses on a balanced approach to content.

Why this role works: Shambler and Moral points and the two endings pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.

Pros:

  • Unique, rewarding playstyle
  • Straightforward gearing path
  • Excels in its niche

Cons:

  • High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
  • Requires deep game knowledge

Build Progression Path

  1. Start with Survival style: the most forgiving option for learning the game
  2. Transition to Spartan style once you understand core mechanics and have access to Bastard
  3. Keep a Ranger Hardcore setup for content that keeps killing you
  4. Try Heavy assault loadout for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics

Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.

Gearing Tips

  • Invest in your primary weapon first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
  • Redux reorganised the original level list. There are 7 chapters across 27 levels, and several 2010 chapters were merged, so a walkthrough written for the 2010 release will name levels that no longer exist as separate loads.
  • Military grade rounds are money. Shooting them at a nosalis is spending the price of a filter on a mutant that dirty ammunition would have killed just as well.
  • Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
