Metro 2033 Redux is 4A Games' 2014 rebuild of the 2010 original, moved onto the engine used for Metro: Last Light. It follows Artyom out of the VDNKh station and across a post-nuclear Moscow underground of 7 chapters and 27 levels, ending at the Ostankino Tower. The Redux version added two play styles: Spartan, which hands you enough ammunition to fight, and Survival, which starves you the way the 2010 original did. Military grade rounds are both the best ammunition in the game and the currency you buy everything with, which turns every trade into a decision about whether you would rather be rich or well armed.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

A-Tier: Spartan style
Spartan style is a top-performing option in Metro 2033 Redux.

|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Bastard | The improvised submachine gun of the Metro, cheap and available early. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Gas mask filters and surface time | Anywhere on the surface or in a contaminated tunnel, Artyom breathes through a mask on a timed filter. |
How to Play Spartan style
Spartan style focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Bastard does the damage and Gas mask filters and surface time keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Survival style
Survival style is a strong option in Metro 2033 Redux.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Revolver | The most customisable weapon in the game, available with long or short barrels, long or short stocks, a silencer and a scope. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Military grade rounds as currency | Pre-war military grade rounds are both the highest damage ammunition and the money every trader accepts. |
How to Play Survival style
Survival style focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Pair Revolver with Military grade rounds as currency and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Ranger Hardcore
Ranger Hardcore is a strong option in Metro 2033 Redux.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Duplet | A break-action multi-barrel shotgun that unloads everything at once. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Universal charger and light discipline | The flashlight and night vision run on a hand-cranked charger with an audible whine. |
How to Play Ranger Hardcore
Ranger Hardcore focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Universal charger and light discipline covers the gap Duplet leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Silent stealth loadout
Silent stealth loadout is a specialized option in Metro 2033 Redux.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Volt Driver | An electric weapon originally from the Ranger Pack extras and included in Redux. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Spartan and Survival play styles | Redux lets you pick between two styles at the start. |
How to Play Silent stealth loadout
Silent stealth loadout focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: This one leans on Spartan and Survival play styles rather than raw numbers, and Volt Driver is what makes that trade pay off. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge
A-Tier: Heavy assault loadout
Heavy assault loadout is a specialized option in Metro 2033 Redux.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Shambler | A semi-automatic shotgun that trades the Duplet's single devastating burst for a usable rate of fire, and appears in a bayonet variant. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Moral points and the two endings | The game silently tracks moral points for things it never tells you about: listening to full conversations, giving military grade rounds to beggars, exploring optional rooms, sparing enemies who are not shooting at you. |
How to Play Heavy assault loadout
Heavy assault loadout focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Shambler and Moral points and the two endings pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Survival style: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Spartan style once you understand core mechanics and have access to Bastard
- Keep a Ranger Hardcore setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Heavy assault loadout for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary weapon first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Redux reorganised the original level list. There are 7 chapters across 27 levels, and several 2010 chapters were merged, so a walkthrough written for the 2010 release will name levels that no longer exist as separate loads.
- Military grade rounds are money. Shooting them at a nosalis is spending the price of a filter on a mutant that dirty ammunition would have killed just as well.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
