Metro 2033 Redux is 4A Games' 2014 rebuild of the 2010 original, moved onto the engine used for Metro: Last Light. It follows Artyom out of the VDNKh station and across a post-nuclear Moscow underground of 7 chapters and 27 levels, ending at the Ostankino Tower. The Redux version added two play styles: Spartan, which hands you enough ammunition to fight, and Survival, which starves you the way the 2010 original did. Military grade rounds are both the best ammunition in the game and the currency you buy everything with, which turns every trade into a decision about whether you would rather be rich or well armed.

These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.

Essential Tips

1. Redux reorganised the original level list

Redux reorganised the original level list. There are 7 chapters across 27 levels, and several 2010 chapters were merged, so a walkthrough written for the 2010 release will name levels that no longer exist as separate loads.

2. Military grade rounds are money

Military grade rounds are money. Shooting them at a nosalis is spending the price of a filter on a mutant that dirty ammunition would have killed just as well.

3. The wristwatch is the whole HUD on Ranger Hardcore

The wristwatch is the whole HUD on Ranger Hardcore. It carries the filter countdown and a visibility indicator, and learning to read it at a glance is what makes the no-HUD run survivable.

4. Pick up every filter regardless of your current stock

Pick up every filter regardless of your current stock. Dead City and the later surface sections are much longer than they look, and the game does not warn you before a filter run.

5. Unscrewing bulbs and shooting lamps is the main stealth tool in human sections

Unscrewing bulbs and shooting lamps is the main stealth tool in human sections. Enemies react to light rather than to a hidden detection meter, so darkening a corridor changes the encounter before you have fired a shot.

6. Pneumatic weapons lose pressure as you fire

Pneumatic weapons lose pressure as you fire. Pump the Tihar or Helsing back to full between fights, because a half-pressure shot on a charging mutant is the same as a miss.

7. Moral points are invisible and cumulative

Moral points are invisible and cumulative. Standing through complete conversations, exploring optional rooms and giving rounds to beggars all contribute towards the alternative ending at the Ostankino Tower.

8. Spartan play style is the sensible first run and Survival is the second

Spartan play style is the sensible first run and Survival is the second. The difference is not just ammunition count, it changes reload speed and encounter pacing throughout.

9. The gas mask cracks when you take a hit to the head

The gas mask cracks when you take a hit to the head. It keeps working, but visibility drops sharply, so finding a replacement mask on a body is worth the detour.

10. Throwing knives are silent, reusable and free

Throwing knives are silent, reusable and free. Picking them back up after each kill makes them the cheapest weapon in a game where every other trigger pull costs currency.

Advanced Strategies

Role Optimization

The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.

For Spartan style (A-Tier):

  • Focus on Gas mask filters and surface time combinations for maximum output.
  • Core gear: Bastard
  • Stat priority: Offensive stats first

For Survival style (A-Tier):

  • Versatile approach that handles any situation.
  • Core gear: Revolver
  • Stat priority: Balanced stats

Mechanic Interactions

Understanding how Metro 2033 Redux's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.

Gas mask filters and surface time + Military grade rounds as currency: Anywhere on the surface or in a contaminated tunnel, Artyom breathes through a mask on a timed filter. Combined with Military grade rounds as currency, pre-war military grade rounds are both the highest damage ammunition and the money every trader accepts.

Universal charger and light discipline + Spartan and Survival play styles: The flashlight and night vision run on a hand-cranked charger with an audible whine. When paired with Spartan and Survival play styles, redux lets you pick between two styles at the start.

Moral points and the two endings scaling: The game silently tracks moral points for things it never tells you about: listening to full conversations, giving military grade rounds to beggars, exploring optional rooms, sparing enemies who are not shooting at you. Enough of them changes what happens at the Ostankino Tower at the end, which is why two players can finish the same campaign and describe completely different final scenes.

Weapons Efficiency

WeaponBest Use CaseWhy
BastardMutant waves in the War chapter levels, where accuracy matters less than volumeThe improvised submachine gun of the Metro, cheap and available early.
RevolverStealth sections and any human camp you would rather take apart from distanceThe most customisable weapon in the game, available with long or short barrels, long or short stocks, a silencer and a scope.
DupletNosalis and lurkers at contact range, and nothing at all beyond ten metresA break-action multi-barrel shotgun that unloads everything at once.
Volt DriverSurvival play styles where conventional rounds have run dryAn electric weapon originally from the Ranger Pack extras and included in Redux.
ShamblerSustained close-quarters fighting where you cannot afford the Duplet's reloadA semi-automatic shotgun that trades the Duplet's single devastating burst for a usable rate of fire, and appears in a bayonet variant.

Location Efficiency

Exhibition (Chapter 1, Let The Journey Begin): The VDNKh station where Artyom lives and where the campaign proper begins, in the chapter titled Let The Journey Begin. It is the game's calm reference point for what a functioning Metro station looks like before everything else goes wrong.

Riga (Chapter 2, Bourbon): The opening level of the Bourbon chapter and the first proper trading hub, where military grade rounds become visibly a currency rather than just ammunition. Spend carefully here, because filters get scarcer later.

Dead City (Chapter 2, Bourbon): The surface section closing the Bourbon chapter, and the game's first sustained lesson in filter management. There is no safe air, the watch is counting, and the route matters more than the fighting.

Front Line (Chapter 4, War): The opening level of the War chapter, dropping Artyom into the fighting between the Reich and the Red Line. It is the largest concentration of human enemies in the game and the best place to practise stealth or abandon it.

Polis (Chapter 5, Hope): The opening level of the Hope chapter and the largest, most civilised station in the Metro, home to the Rangers and the Brahmin. It is the calm before the Depository and Archives levels and the last real chance to resupply properly.

Mistakes Even Veterans Make

  1. Loading military grade rounds into a weapon for ordinary fights, then arriving at a trader with nothing left to buy filters with.
  2. Running the flashlight constantly. The charger noise and the light itself both give you away in human sections, and the charge does not last.
  3. Treating Ranger Hardcore as a damage modifier. Losing the HUD entirely means you have to count ammunition and filters manually, which is a different skill from aiming better.
  4. Sprinting through stations. Moral points come from listening and exploring, and rushing past every conversation quietly locks you out of the alternative ending.
  5. Relying on the Duplet at range. Its damage falls off almost immediately and its reload leaves you defenceless for longer than most mutants need to close.

Pro Quick Tips

  • Redux reorganised the original level list. There are 7 chapters across 27 levels, and several 2010 chapters were merged, so a walkthrough written for the 2010 release will name levels that no longer exist as separate loads.
  • Military grade rounds are money. Shooting them at a nosalis is spending the price of a filter on a mutant that dirty ammunition would have killed just as well.
  • The wristwatch is the whole HUD on Ranger Hardcore. It carries the filter countdown and a visibility indicator, and learning to read it at a glance is what makes the no-HUD run survivable.
  • Start with Survival style, switch to Spartan style when ready
  • Invest in Bastard above everything else
  • Clear areas in order: Exhibition → Riga → Dead City → Front Line → Polis. See our maps guide
  • Gas mask filters and surface time + Military grade rounds as currency together are stronger than either alone
