People Playground is a 2D physics sandbox by mestiez, published by Studio Minus and on Steam since 23 July 2019. Every object carries its own weight, sharpness, conductivity and heat capacity, and every ragdoll has bones, organs, blood and a nervous system rather than a health bar. There is no score and no win condition, only firearms, machinery, syringes, wires and a Steam Workshop full of extra parts.
Starting People Playground can feel overwhelming. This guide tells you exactly what to focus on during your first hours so you don't waste time on things that don't matter yet. For the full progression path, see our walkthrough.
What Kind of Game Is This?
People Playground is a sandbox game built around Ragdoll anatomy and vitals and Heat and temperature transfer. The core loop involves mastering these systems to progress through increasingly challenging content.
What to expect: Time investment in learning mechanics, experimentation, and gradual mastery. The game rewards patience and knowledge.
Choosing Your First Build
| Build | Beginner Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Contraption builder | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Weapons tester | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Field surgeon | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Electrician | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Demolition tester | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
Our recommendation: Start with Weapons tester. It offers the most forgiving experience while teaching core mechanics.
Avoid Demolition tester as your first pick. It requires deep knowledge of game systems to use effectively. Once you're ready, check our classes guide for all options.
First Session Step-by-Step
Step 1: Learn Ragdoll anatomy and vitals
Each human has a heart, lungs, bones, blood and nerves instead of a single health value. Severing a vessel, cooking the body past its heat tolerance and cutting off air all kill in different ways, and a Defibrillator or Life Syringe can sometimes undo the result.
This is the foundation. Spend your first 15-30 minutes getting comfortable with how Ragdoll anatomy and vitals works before worrying about anything else. Our combat guide breaks this down further.
Step 2: Head to Default
The mid sized map everyone starts on, a flat floor and a plain backdrop with nothing that interferes with the simulation. Almost every tutorial and Workshop showcase is filmed here for exactly that reason.
Clear the main content here before moving on. Everything teaches fundamentals you'll need later. See our maps guide for all locations.
Step 3: Get Your First Upgrade
Look for Atom Bomb: it's the most accessible early upgrade. The heaviest vanilla explosive. It clears the visible area, shreds most props into debris fragments and drags the framerate down hard on a crowded scene.
Step 4: Understand Heat and temperature transfer
Materials have a heat capacity and pass warmth to whatever they touch. A steel plate heated by a Tesla Coil cooks anything resting on it, while water on the Sea map pulls heat out fast enough to quench a burning ragdoll.
This is the system most new players overlook. Invest time here early. It pays off throughout the entire game.
Step 5: Push to Void
Added in version 1.2.7, an unlit map with no floor at all. Objects fall until they cross the boundary and then despawn, so the scene cleans itself.

Heat and temperature transfer

Electricity propagation
Current travels along Propagation Wire and Copper Wire and through any conductive object in contact. A Battery, an Industrial Generator or a Tesla Coil will push charge across an entire metal floor, so surface choice decides where the shock lands.
Object linking and contraptions
Steel Binding, Hinge, Rotor, Servo, Piston and Winch join loose objects into working machines. That is how players end up with cars, walkers, turrets and elevators built from parts never intended as vehicle components.
Steam Workshop items
The game exposes a modding API and the Workshop hosts thousands of added items, maps and scripted contraptions. A large share of the clips people post online use at least one addon rather than pure vanilla parts.
Common Beginner Mistakes
1. Bolting a vehicle together with Rope and Cable, then watching the frame fold the moment the Thruster lights
This is a common trap that costs new players significant time.
2. Running electricity tests on a metal floor so every object conducts and the result is unreadable
This is a common trap that costs new players significant time.
3. Reaching for the Defibrillator on a burned or crushed ragdoll where only the Life Syringe helps
This is a common trap that costs new players significant time.
4. Detonating an Atom Bomb on a scene already holding hundreds of props, then blaming the engine
This is a common trap that costs new players significant time.
5. Fitting a Rotor where a Servo was needed, so a walker leg spins instead of stepping
This is a common trap that costs new players significant time.
First 5 Hours Checklist
- Understand Ragdoll anatomy and vitals and Heat and temperature transfer
- Choose Weapons tester as starting build
- Clear Default main content
- Acquire Atom Bomb or equivalent upgrade
- Reach Void
- Join frames with Steel Binding instead of Rope or Cable. A binding holds its angle, while a rope lets the chassis fold the instant a Thruster fires, which is why most first aircraft flip rather than climb.
- Blood loss kills slowly and without an obvious wound. If a ragdoll goes limp for no visible reason, look for a cut vessel; the Coagulation Syringe stops the bleed and the Life Syringe undoes the whole thing.
Tips for New Players
- Join frames with Steel Binding instead of Rope or Cable. A binding holds its angle, while a rope lets the chassis fold the instant a Thruster fires, which is why most first aircraft flip rather than climb.
- Blood loss kills slowly and without an obvious wound. If a ragdoll goes limp for no visible reason, look for a cut vessel; the Coagulation Syringe stops the bleed and the Life Syringe undoes the whole thing.
- Conductivity is a material property, so a metal floor carries a Tesla Coil discharge across the entire scene. Stand electrical tests on wood or glass when you want the current to stay where you put it.
- Heat moves by contact rather than proximity. A ragdoll standing beside the Lava map floor is fine; the same ragdoll lying on it cooks in seconds, and every heated plate you build follows that rule.
- The Defibrillator only helps when the heart has stopped and the body is otherwise intact. Against burns, crushing or missing limbs it does nothing at all, and the Life Syringe is the tool you actually wanted.
- Rotor and Servo are not interchangeable. A Rotor spins continuously while powered, a Servo turns to a commanded angle, so walker legs and robot arms need Servos while wheels and fans need Rotors.
- Big explosives such as the Atom Bomb and Fusion Bomb spawn hundreds of debris fragments. A scene already holding several hundred objects will stutter badly the moment the blast resolves, so clear it first.
- Water on the Sea map drags, conducts and drowns simultaneously. Running a boat test and an electricity test on the same map contaminates both sets of results.
- The Void map has no surface, so anything you drop leaves the scene for good. That makes it the fastest cleanup tool in the game, quicker than deleting fifty objects by hand.
- Workshop addons load into the same spawn menu as vanilla parts. If categories start behaving oddly after a subscription spree, disable the most recent addon first rather than reinstalling the game.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is People Playground still being updated?
Version 1.27 arrived on 21 October 2023 and added the Reactor A5 map plus the Naval Mine, Chain, A5 Decoupler and a set of office props. Work on 1.28 has continued since, and the Workshop keeps producing content between official patches.
What is the difference between the Defibrillator and the Life Syringe?
The Defibrillator restarts a stopped heart and does nothing else. The Life Syringe restores the whole organism, clearing bleeding, fractures and organ damage, which makes it the practical reset button for repeated testing.
Which map should I build contraptions on?
Default when you want measurements that nothing interferes with, Humongous when the machine needs room, and Void when you want debris to delete itself. Sea and Lava add water and heat that will skew unrelated tests.
Does People Playground have multiplayer?
The base game is single player. Community addons on the Steam Workshop add networked play, but nothing in vanilla supports two people in the same scene, and version 1.28 has not changed that.
How do I build a car that actually drives?
Frame a chassis from Metal Poles or plates joined with Steel Binding, fit Motorized Wheels at each end, and run a Battery through a Button or Activation Toggle. Frame stiffness matters more than motor power, because a floppy chassis absorbs all the torque.
