People Playground is a 2D physics sandbox by mestiez, published by Studio Minus and on Steam since 23 July 2019. Every object carries its own weight, sharpness, conductivity and heat capacity, and every ragdoll has bones, organs, blood and a nervous system rather than a health bar. There is no score and no win condition, only firearms, machinery, syringes, wires and a Steam Workshop full of extra parts.
These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.
Essential Tips
1. Join frames with Steel Binding instead of Rope or Cable
Join frames with Steel Binding instead of Rope or Cable. A binding holds its angle, while a rope lets the chassis fold the instant a Thruster fires, which is why most first aircraft flip rather than climb.
2. Blood loss kills slowly and without an obvious wound
Blood loss kills slowly and without an obvious wound. If a ragdoll goes limp for no visible reason, look for a cut vessel; the Coagulation Syringe stops the bleed and the Life Syringe undoes the whole thing.
3. Conductivity is a material property, so a metal floor carries a Tesla Coil discharge across the entire scene
Conductivity is a material property, so a metal floor carries a Tesla Coil discharge across the entire scene. Stand electrical tests on wood or glass when you want the current to stay where you put it.
4. Heat moves by contact rather than proximity
Heat moves by contact rather than proximity. A ragdoll standing beside the Lava map floor is fine; the same ragdoll lying on it cooks in seconds, and every heated plate you build follows that rule.
5. The Defibrillator only helps when the heart has stopped and the body is otherwise intact
The Defibrillator only helps when the heart has stopped and the body is otherwise intact. Against burns, crushing or missing limbs it does nothing at all, and the Life Syringe is the tool you actually wanted.
6. Rotor and Servo are not interchangeable
Rotor and Servo are not interchangeable. A Rotor spins continuously while powered, a Servo turns to a commanded angle, so walker legs and robot arms need Servos while wheels and fans need Rotors.
7. Big explosives such as the Atom Bomb and Fusion Bomb spawn hundreds of debris fragments
Big explosives such as the Atom Bomb and Fusion Bomb spawn hundreds of debris fragments. A scene already holding several hundred objects will stutter badly the moment the blast resolves, so clear it first.
8. Water on the Sea map drags, conducts and drowns simultaneously
Water on the Sea map drags, conducts and drowns simultaneously. Running a boat test and an electricity test on the same map contaminates both sets of results.
9. The Void map has no surface, so anything you drop leaves the scene for good
The Void map has no surface, so anything you drop leaves the scene for good. That makes it the fastest cleanup tool in the game, quicker than deleting fifty objects by hand.
10. Workshop addons load into the same spawn menu as vanilla parts
Workshop addons load into the same spawn menu as vanilla parts. If categories start behaving oddly after a subscription spree, disable the most recent addon first rather than reinstalling the game.
Advanced Strategies
Build Optimization
The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.
For Contraption builder (A-Tier):
- Focus on Ragdoll anatomy and vitals combinations for maximum output.
- Core gear: 9mm Pistol
- Stat priority: Offensive stats first
For Weapons tester (A-Tier):
- Versatile approach that handles any situation.
- Core gear: Atom Bomb
- Stat priority: Balanced stats
Mechanic Interactions
Understanding how People Playground's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.
Ragdoll anatomy and vitals + Heat and temperature transfer: Each human has a heart, lungs, bones, blood and nerves instead of a single health value. Combined with Heat and temperature transfer, materials have a heat capacity and pass warmth to whatever they touch.
Electricity propagation + Object linking and contraptions: Current travels along Propagation Wire and Copper Wire and through any conductive object in contact. When paired with Object linking and contraptions, steel binding, hinge, rotor, servo, piston and winch join loose objects into working machines.
Steam Workshop items scaling: The game exposes a modding API and the Workshop hosts thousands of added items, maps and scripted contraptions. A large share of the clips people post online use at least one addon rather than pure vanilla parts.
Equipment Efficiency
| Equipment | Best Use Case | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 9mm Pistol | Learning which hit locations are actually lethal before moving up to the AK-47 or Minigun. | The plainest firearm in the spawn menu, low power and easy to place shots with, which makes it the clearest way to watch how a bullet interacts with bone, organs and armour. |
| Atom Bomb | Ending a session, or stress testing a base you spent an hour bolting together. | The heaviest vanilla explosive. |
| Tesla Coil | Electricity experiments and trap rooms where you want damage without firing a projectile. | Arcs current into nearby conductive objects while powered, cooking flesh and igniting anything flammable inside its reach. |
| Life Syringe | Running the same test subject through twenty attempts instead of spawning a fresh ragdoll every time. | Restores an organism to a healthy state, clearing bleeding, broken bones and organ damage in one injection. |
| Thruster | Gliders, rockets and anything that needs to leave the ground under its own power. | A small directional engine that pushes while activated. |
Location Efficiency
Default (Any session): The mid sized map everyone starts on, a flat floor and a plain backdrop with nothing that interferes with the simulation. Almost every tutorial and Workshop showcase is filmed here for exactly that reason.
Void (Any session): Added in version 1.2.7, an unlit map with no floor at all. Objects fall until they cross the boundary and then despawn, so the scene cleans itself.
Sea (Intermediate): A water map where the liquid drags objects, quenches fire, conducts current and drowns anything that cannot breathe. Three separate systems act on your test at once.
Lava (Intermediate): A map floored with lava that transfers heat into whatever touches it. Useful precisely because it gives you an infinite heat source you do not have to build.
Humongous (Advanced): A far wider arena than Default with room to run a vehicle up to speed or fire down a long sightline before anything hits a wall.
Mistakes Even Veterans Make
- Bolting a vehicle together with Rope and Cable, then watching the frame fold the moment the Thruster lights.
- Running electricity tests on a metal floor so every object conducts and the result is unreadable.
- Reaching for the Defibrillator on a burned or crushed ragdoll where only the Life Syringe helps.
- Detonating an Atom Bomb on a scene already holding hundreds of props, then blaming the engine.
- Fitting a Rotor where a Servo was needed, so a walker leg spins instead of stepping.
Pro Quick Tips
- Join frames with Steel Binding instead of Rope or Cable. A binding holds its angle, while a rope lets the chassis fold the instant a Thruster fires, which is why most first aircraft flip rather than climb.
- Blood loss kills slowly and without an obvious wound. If a ragdoll goes limp for no visible reason, look for a cut vessel; the Coagulation Syringe stops the bleed and the Life Syringe undoes the whole thing.
- Conductivity is a material property, so a metal floor carries a Tesla Coil discharge across the entire scene. Stand electrical tests on wood or glass when you want the current to stay where you put it.
- Start with Weapons tester, switch to Contraption builder when ready
- Invest in 9mm Pistol above everything else
- Clear areas in order: Default → Void → Sea → Lava → Humongous. See our maps guide
- Ragdoll anatomy and vitals + Heat and temperature transfer together are stronger than either alone
