People Playground is a 2D physics sandbox by mestiez, published by Studio Minus and on Steam since 23 July 2019. Every object carries its own weight, sharpness, conductivity and heat capacity, and every ragdoll has bones, organs, blood and a nervous system rather than a health bar. There is no score and no win condition, only firearms, machinery, syringes, wires and a Steam Workshop full of extra parts.

Combat in People Playground rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.

Core Combat Mechanics

1. Ragdoll anatomy and vitals

Each human has a heart, lungs, bones, blood and nerves instead of a single health value. Severing a vessel, cooking the body past its heat tolerance and cutting off air all kill in different ways, and a Defibrillator or Life Syringe can sometimes undo the result.

Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.

2. Heat and temperature transfer

Materials have a heat capacity and pass warmth to whatever they touch. A steel plate heated by a Tesla Coil cooks anything resting on it, while water on the Sea map pulls heat out fast enough to quench a burning ragdoll.

Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.

3. Electricity propagation

Current travels along Propagation Wire and Copper Wire and through any conductive object in contact. A Battery, an Industrial Generator or a Tesla Coil will push charge across an entire metal floor, so surface choice decides where the shock lands.

Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.

4. Object linking and contraptions

Steel Binding, Hinge, Rotor, Servo, Piston and Winch join loose objects into working machines. That is how players end up with cars, walkers, turrets and elevators built from parts never intended as vehicle components.

Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.

5. Steam Workshop items

The game exposes a modding API and the Workshop hosts thousands of added items, maps and scripted contraptions. A large share of the clips people post online use at least one addon rather than pure vanilla parts.

Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.

How These Mechanics Combine

Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:

Ragdoll anatomy and vitals + Heat and temperature transfer

Each human has a heart, lungs, bones, blood and nerves instead of a single health value. When combined with Heat and temperature transfer, materials have a heat capacity and pass warmth to whatever they touch. This combination is the core of every effective build.

Electricity propagation + Object linking and contraptions

Current travels along Propagation Wire and Copper Wire and through any conductive object in contact. Paired with Object linking and contraptions, steel binding, hinge, rotor, servo, piston and winch join loose objects into working machines. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.

Steam Workshop items as a Multiplier

The game exposes a modding API and the Workshop hosts thousands of added items, maps and scripted contraptions. A large share of the clips people post online use at least one addon rather than pure vanilla parts. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Steam Workshop items optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques

Damage Optimization

  1. Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities
  2. Exploit Ragdoll anatomy and vitals for maximum damage windows
  3. Chain Heat and temperature transfer and Electricity propagation for combo damage
  4. Use Object linking and contraptions to create openings

Survivability

  1. Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
  2. Join frames with Steel Binding instead of Rope or Cable. A binding holds its angle, while a rope lets the chassis fold the instant a Thruster fires, which is why most first aircraft flip rather than climb.
  3. Position using Ragdoll anatomy and vitals to control spacing
  4. Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort

Boss Combat

Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.

  • Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
  • Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
  • Build preparation: Swap gear and equipment for specific fights when needed

Common Combat Mistakes

  1. Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
  2. Ignoring Heat and temperature transfer: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
  3. Wrong equipment for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
  4. Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
  5. Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Default but will get you killed in Humongous.
