Valve released Portal 2 in April 2011 as a first person puzzle game with no combat, no health bar and exactly one device: the portal gun. The single player campaign runs nine chapters through Aperture Science, and a separate two player campaign hands ATLAS and P-Body a portal gun each, putting four portals on the field at once. Everything you pick up is a testing element rather than a weapon, from the three paint gels to the Excursion Funnels and Hard Light Bridges.
Combat in Portal 2 rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.
Core Combat Mechanics
1. Portals only stick to white surfaces
The gun places one blue and one orange portal, and both need a flat white panel that conducts portals. Aperture's black metal, glass and grating exist specifically to refuse you a surface, so reading which panels are white is most of the puzzle.
Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.
2. Momentum carries through portals
Speed is preserved across a portal and only the direction changes. Falling through a floor portal and exiting a wall portal converts a long drop into horizontal distance, and whole chambers are built around that conversion.
Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.
3. The three paint gels
Repulsion Gel is blue and bounces whatever lands on it. Propulsion Gel is orange and roughly doubles your running speed. Conversion Gel is white, made from ground moon rock, and turns any surface it coats into one that accepts portals.
Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.
4. Excursion Funnels and Hard Light Bridges
Funnels are tractor beams that carry you and cubes along their length, and buttons reverse the flow. Hard Light Bridges are solid platforms of light that pass through portals unchanged, so a bridge can be relocated to cross a pit or block turret fire.
Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.
5. Four portals in two player co-op
Each co-op player carries their own gun, so four portals exist simultaneously. Most co-op chambers cannot be solved alone because one player has to hold a funnel or bridge in place while the other travels through it.
Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.
How These Mechanics Combine
Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:
Portals only stick to white surfaces + Momentum carries through portals
The gun places one blue and one orange portal, and both need a flat white panel that conducts portals. When combined with Momentum carries through portals, speed is preserved across a portal and only the direction changes. This combination is the core of every effective build.
The three paint gels + Excursion Funnels and Hard Light Bridges
Repulsion Gel is blue and bounces whatever lands on it. Paired with Excursion Funnels and Hard Light Bridges, funnels are tractor beams that carry you and cubes along their length, and buttons reverse the flow. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.
Four portals in two player co-op as a Multiplier
Each co-op player carries their own gun, so four portals exist simultaneously. Most co-op chambers cannot be solved alone because one player has to hold a funnel or bridge in place while the other travels through it. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Four portals in two player co-op optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques
Damage Optimization
- Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities
- Exploit Portals only stick to white surfaces for maximum damage windows
- Chain Momentum carries through portals and The three paint gels for combo damage
- Use Excursion Funnels and Hard Light Bridges to create openings
Survivability
- Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
- Portal 2 has no combat, no health bar and no permanent failure state. Turrets and acid simply reset you to the start of the room, so experimenting costs nothing except time.
- Position using Portals only stick to white surfaces to control spacing
- Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort
Boss Combat
Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.
- Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
- Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
- Build preparation: Swap gear and equipment for specific fights when needed
Common Combat Mistakes
- Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
- Ignoring Momentum carries through portals: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
- Wrong equipment for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
- Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
- Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Chapter 1: The Courtesy Call but will get you killed in Co-op Course 5: Mobility Gels.
