Valve released Portal 2 in April 2011 as a first person puzzle game with no combat, no health bar and exactly one device: the portal gun. The single player campaign runs nine chapters through Aperture Science, and a separate two player campaign hands ATLAS and P-Body a portal gun each, putting four portals on the field at once. Everything you pick up is a testing element rather than a weapon, from the three paint gels to the Excursion Funnels and Hard Light Bridges.

Portal 2 features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.

Chapter 1: The Courtesy Call: Starting Area

The opening. Wheatley wakes Chell in a decayed relaxation vault and walks her through the ruined test track before restarting GLaDOS. It reteaches portals from zero with no time pressure.

  • Focus on mastering Momentum carries through portals. It's critical from this point on.
  • Farm for Repulsion Gel if you don't have it yet.
  • Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
  • Prepare for the difficulty spike in Chapter 8: The Itch.

Chapter 8: The Itch: Mid Game

Wheatley has taken the facility and builds his own test chambers badly, including Frankenturrets assembled from turret and cube parts. The puzzles are simpler and the hazards far less careful.

Chapter 9: The Part Where He Kills You: Late Game

The finale against Wheatley, fought with Conversion Gel and his own bombs rather than with any weapon. It ends by putting a portal on the surface of the moon, which conducts portals because it is moon rock.

Recommended BuildATLAS, the co-op sphere
Key EquipmentPortal Gun

What to Do Here

  • Full build optimization is expected by this point.
  • Portal Gun should be your primary, fully upgraded.
  • Four portals in two player co-op mastery starts mattering here.
  • Farm resources for the push into Co-op Course 5: Mobility Gels.

Co-op Course 5: Mobility Gels: Endgame

The last of the five original co-op courses, built entirely around Repulsion and Propulsion Gel for two players at once. It is the hardest part of the base co-op campaign.

AttributeDetail
DifficultyEnd of the co-op campaign
Key RewardsTwo player gel puzzles, co-op completion, entry into the free Art Therapy course
Recommended BuildATLAS, the co-op sphere
Key EquipmentPortal Gun

What to Do Here

  • This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
  • See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
  • The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
  • Experiment with Funnel and bridge planner for variety once you've mastered the meta.

Exploration Tips

  1. Clear areas in order: Chapter 1: The Courtesy Call → Chapter 6: The Fall → Chapter 8: The Itch → Chapter 9: The Part Where He Kills You → Co-op Course 5: Mobility Gels. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
  2. Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
  3. Match your equipment: Some areas favor different equipment types.
  4. Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
  5. Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
