Valve released Portal 2 in April 2011 as a first person puzzle game with no combat, no health bar and exactly one device: the portal gun. The single player campaign runs nine chapters through Aperture Science, and a separate two player campaign hands ATLAS and P-Body a portal gun each, putting four portals on the field at once. Everything you pick up is a testing element rather than a weapon, from the three paint gels to the Excursion Funnels and Hard Light Bridges.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

See our maps guide for detailed area breakdowns.
Phase 1: Getting Started (Chapter 1: The Courtesy Call)
The opening. Wheatley wakes Chell in a decayed relaxation vault and walks her through the ruined test track before restarting GLaDOS. It reteaches portals from zero with no time pressure.
Level/Difficulty: First 60 to 90 minutes Key Rewards: The portal gun, the basic portal rules, the GLaDOS reboot
What to Do in Chapter 1: The Courtesy Call
- Learn Portals only stick to white surfaces. The gun places one blue and one orange portal, and both need a flat white panel that conducts portals. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick P-Body, the co-op turret as your starting build. See our builds guide for why.
- Portal 2 has no combat, no health bar and no permanent failure state. Turrets and acid simply reset you to the start of the room, so experimenting costs nothing except time.
- Acquire your first equipment upgrade: Repulsion Gel or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand Portals only stick to white surfaces fundamentals
- P-Body, the co-op turret selected and functional
- Chapter 1: The Courtesy Call main content cleared
- Ready for Chapter 6: The Fall
Phase 2: Early Game (Chapter 6: The Fall)
Chell drops into Old Aperture, decades of abandoned test shafts buried under the modern facility and narrated by Cave Johnson recordings. This is where the gels start arriving.
Level/Difficulty: Roughly the halfway point Key Rewards: Repulsion Gel, Propulsion Gel, the Cave Johnson and Caroline backstory
What to Do in Chapter 6: The Fall
- Work on Momentum carries through portals. Speed is preserved across a portal and only the direction changes. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for Repulsion Gel if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Before placing a portal, check the surface material. White panels conduct portals and Aperture's black metal, glass and grating refuse them, and half of a stuck puzzle is the one white panel you have not spotted.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Chapter 8: The Itch.
- Consider whether ATLAS, the co-op sphere might suit your playstyle better than P-Body, the co-op turret.
Phase 2 Checklist
- Momentum carries through portals integrated into gameplay
- Repulsion Gel acquired
- Chapter 6: The Fall fully cleared
- Ready for Chapter 8: The Itch
Phase 3: Mid Game (Chapter 8: The Itch)
Wheatley has taken the facility and builds his own test chambers badly, including Frankenturrets assembled from turret and cube parts. The puzzles are simpler and the hazards far less careful.
Level/Difficulty: Late campaign Key Rewards: Frankenturret puzzles, the setup for the final confrontation
What to Do in Chapter 8: The Itch
- Master The three paint gels. Repulsion Gel is blue and bounces whatever lands on it. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Portal Gun. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
- Speed through a portal is conserved and only redirected. If a jump falls short, move the entry portal to a floor you can reach from higher up rather than trying to jump harder.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in Excursion Funnels and Hard Light Bridges for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- The three paint gels mastered
- Portal Gun acquired or in progress
- Chapter 8: The Itch fully cleared
- Ready for Chapter 9: The Part Where He Kills You
Phase 4: Late Game (Chapter 9: The Part Where He Kills You)
The finale against Wheatley, fought with Conversion Gel and his own bombs rather than with any weapon. It ends by putting a portal on the surface of the moon, which conducts portals because it is moon rock.
Level/Difficulty: Final chapter Key Rewards: The ending, the moon portal, the payoff for everything Conversion Gel taught you
What to Do in Chapter 9: The Part Where He Kills You
- Finalize your build. You should be running ATLAS, the co-op sphere or P-Body, the co-op turret with optimized gear.
- Portal Gun should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- Look at ceilings. Valve hides required white panels overhead more often than on walls, and the camera never points there on its own.
- Four portals in two player co-op optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Co-op Course 5: Mobility Gels.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Portal Gun upgraded to max
- Chapter 9: The Part Where He Kills You fully cleared
- Ready for Co-op Course 5: Mobility Gels
Phase 5: Endgame (Co-op Course 5: Mobility Gels)
The last of the five original co-op courses, built entirely around Repulsion and Propulsion Gel for two players at once. It is the hardest part of the base co-op campaign.
Level/Difficulty: End of the co-op campaign Key Rewards: Two player gel puzzles, co-op completion, entry into the free Art Therapy course
What to Do in Co-op Course 5: Mobility Gels
- Co-op Course 5: Mobility Gels tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- Portal the gel stream, not yourself. A dispenser pointing at a useless corner can be redirected onto the wall you actually need coated, which is how most Chapter 6 and 7 puzzles resolve.
- The endgame loop: run Co-op Course 5: Mobility Gels, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Funnel and bridge planner for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where Four portals in two player co-op mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Co-op Course 5: Mobility Gels fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Trying to jump the gap. Portal 2 rewards falling from height into a floor portal, not pressing the jump key harder.
- Placing both portals within sight of each other. If you can see both ends at once you have usually not solved anything, because the point is linking two places you cannot see together.
- Walking to the gel instead of aiming it. Gel streams pass through portals, and moving the stream is almost always the intended answer.
- Hunting for a second weapon. There is nothing beyond the portal gun, and searching a chamber for a gun wastes the time you should be spending reading panels.
- Skipping co-op as a solo player. The five course co-op campaign is a completely separate set of puzzles built for four portals, not a rerun of the single player chambers.
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
- Portal 2 has no combat, no health bar and no permanent failure state. Turrets and acid simply reset you to the start of the room, so experimenting costs nothing except time.
- Before placing a portal, check the surface material. White panels conduct portals and Aperture's black metal, glass and grating refuse them, and half of a stuck puzzle is the one white panel you have not spotted.
- Speed through a portal is conserved and only redirected. If a jump falls short, move the entry portal to a floor you can reach from higher up rather than trying to jump harder.
- Look at ceilings. Valve hides required white panels overhead more often than on walls, and the camera never points there on its own.
- Portal the gel stream, not yourself. A dispenser pointing at a useless corner can be redirected onto the wall you actually need coated, which is how most Chapter 6 and 7 puzzles resolve.
