This Portal 2 tier list ranks every major option by overall effectiveness. Rankings factor in damage output, survivability, versatility, gear requirements, and how well each option scales.
Tier definitions: S = best in class, always a strong pick. A = strong and competitive, minor weaknesses. B = solid but clearly outperformed in most situations. C = viable only for players who enjoy the playstyle.

Equipment Rankings
| Equipment | Best With | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Portal Gun | Every puzzle in the game. Portal 2 has no other weapon, and the gun exists to move you and cubes rather than to fight. | The Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device fires one blue and one orange portal onto white portal conducting surfaces. |
| Repulsion Gel | Reaching ledges no portal can see, and converting a fatal drop into a controlled climb. | The blue paint. |
| Propulsion Gel | Long horizontal gaps, and feeding extra speed into a momentum chain that would otherwise fall short. | The orange paint. |
| Conversion Gel | Chambers where every useful surface refuses portals, and the Wheatley confrontation in Chapter 9. | The white paint, made from ground moon rock. |
| Excursion Funnel | Moving a cube and yourself at the same time, and crossing acid pits that have no floor at all. | A tractor beam that carries players and cubes along its length and passes through portals without breaking. |

Equipment Analysis
Portal Gun: The Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device fires one blue and one orange portal onto white portal conducting surfaces. It has no damage value, no ammunition and no fire mode that harms anything.
Repulsion Gel: The blue paint. Anything landing on a coated surface bounces, and repeated bounces on the same patch build height instead of losing it.
Propulsion Gel: The orange paint. Running across it roughly doubles your speed, and that speed carries through a portal placed at the end of the strip.
Conversion Gel: The white paint, made from ground moon rock. It coats a surface and makes it accept portals, which turns Aperture's deliberate black panelling from a wall into an option.
Excursion Funnel: A tractor beam that carries players and cubes along its length and passes through portals without breaking. Some emitters come with a button that reverses the flow.
Meta Analysis
The current meta in Portal 2 centers on Portals only stick to white surfaces and Momentum carries through portals. Builds that leverage both systems outperform those that focus on only one. Our combat guide explains these interactions in depth.
What's strong right now:
- ATLAS, the co-op sphere with Portal Gun is the benchmark. Everything else is measured against it.
- The three paint gels builds are gaining ground as players find new combinations.
- Momentum first solver remains essential for learning hard content. See the boss guide.
What's underrated:
- P-Body, the co-op turret is consistently overlooked despite being the most flexible option.
- Propulsion Gel offers excellent performance for its investment level.
What's overhyped:
- Pure Funnel and bridge planner builds. High ceiling but the consistency isn't there for most players.
