Valve released Portal 2 in April 2011 as a first person puzzle game with no combat, no health bar and exactly one device: the portal gun. The single player campaign runs nine chapters through Aperture Science, and a separate two player campaign hands ATLAS and P-Body a portal gun each, putting four portals on the field at once. Everything you pick up is a testing element rather than a weapon, from the three paint gels to the Excursion Funnels and Hard Light Bridges.
These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.
Essential Tips
1. Portal 2 has no combat, no health bar and no permanent failure state
Portal 2 has no combat, no health bar and no permanent failure state. Turrets and acid simply reset you to the start of the room, so experimenting costs nothing except time.
2. Before placing a portal, check the surface material
Before placing a portal, check the surface material. White panels conduct portals and Aperture's black metal, glass and grating refuse them, and half of a stuck puzzle is the one white panel you have not spotted.
3. Speed through a portal is conserved and only redirected
Speed through a portal is conserved and only redirected. If a jump falls short, move the entry portal to a floor you can reach from higher up rather than trying to jump harder.
4. Look at ceilings
Look at ceilings. Valve hides required white panels overhead more often than on walls, and the camera never points there on its own.
5. Portal the gel stream, not yourself
Portal the gel stream, not yourself. A dispenser pointing at a useless corner can be redirected onto the wall you actually need coated, which is how most Chapter 6 and 7 puzzles resolve.
6. Repulsion Gel gains height across repeated bounces if you keep landing on the same patch
Repulsion Gel gains height across repeated bounces if you keep landing on the same patch. Do not fight it by holding a direction, let two or three bounces build first and steer afterwards.
7. Propulsion Gel needs a run up
Propulsion Gel needs a run up. Standing on it achieves nothing, so treat an orange strip as a launch approach that has to end at a portal or a ledge.
8. Hard Light Bridges block turret fire
Hard Light Bridges block turret fire. When a room combines turrets with a bridge emitter, the intended answer is usually a wall of light rather than knocking each turret over individually.
9. In co-op, use the ping tool and the built in three second countdown rather than describing panels out loud
In co-op, use the ping tool and the built in three second countdown rather than describing panels out loud. Both robots see the same marker, which ends the argument about which white wall you meant.
10. The Perpetual Testing Initiative editor ships with the game and publishes straight to the Steam Workshop
The Perpetual Testing Initiative editor ships with the game and publishes straight to the Steam Workshop. After nine chapters and five co-op courses, community chambers are where the remaining hours live.
Advanced Strategies
Build Optimization
The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.
For ATLAS, the co-op sphere (A-Tier):
- Focus on Portals only stick to white surfaces combinations for maximum output.
- Core gear: Portal Gun
- Stat priority: Offensive stats first
For P-Body, the co-op turret (A-Tier):
- Versatile approach that handles any situation.
- Core gear: Repulsion Gel
- Stat priority: Balanced stats
Mechanic Interactions
Understanding how Portal 2's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.
Portals only stick to white surfaces + Momentum carries through portals: The gun places one blue and one orange portal, and both need a flat white panel that conducts portals. Combined with Momentum carries through portals, speed is preserved across a portal and only the direction changes.
The three paint gels + Excursion Funnels and Hard Light Bridges: Repulsion Gel is blue and bounces whatever lands on it. When paired with Excursion Funnels and Hard Light Bridges, funnels are tractor beams that carry you and cubes along their length, and buttons reverse the flow.
Four portals in two player co-op scaling: Each co-op player carries their own gun, so four portals exist simultaneously. Most co-op chambers cannot be solved alone because one player has to hold a funnel or bridge in place while the other travels through it.
Equipment Efficiency
| Equipment | Best Use Case | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Portal Gun | Every puzzle in the game. Portal 2 has no other weapon, and the gun exists to move you and cubes rather than to fight. | The Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device fires one blue and one orange portal onto white portal conducting surfaces. |
| Repulsion Gel | Reaching ledges no portal can see, and converting a fatal drop into a controlled climb. | The blue paint. |
| Propulsion Gel | Long horizontal gaps, and feeding extra speed into a momentum chain that would otherwise fall short. | The orange paint. |
| Conversion Gel | Chambers where every useful surface refuses portals, and the Wheatley confrontation in Chapter 9. | The white paint, made from ground moon rock. |
| Excursion Funnel | Moving a cube and yourself at the same time, and crossing acid pits that have no floor at all. | A tractor beam that carries players and cubes along its length and passes through portals without breaking. |
Location Efficiency
Chapter 1: The Courtesy Call (First 60 to 90 minutes): The opening. Wheatley wakes Chell in a decayed relaxation vault and walks her through the ruined test track before restarting GLaDOS. It reteaches portals from zero with no time pressure.
Chapter 6: The Fall (Roughly the halfway point): Chell drops into Old Aperture, decades of abandoned test shafts buried under the modern facility and narrated by Cave Johnson recordings. This is where the gels start arriving.
Chapter 8: The Itch (Late campaign): Wheatley has taken the facility and builds his own test chambers badly, including Frankenturrets assembled from turret and cube parts. The puzzles are simpler and the hazards far less careful.
Chapter 9: The Part Where He Kills You (Final chapter): The finale against Wheatley, fought with Conversion Gel and his own bombs rather than with any weapon. It ends by putting a portal on the surface of the moon, which conducts portals because it is moon rock.
Co-op Course 5: Mobility Gels (End of the co-op campaign): The last of the five original co-op courses, built entirely around Repulsion and Propulsion Gel for two players at once. It is the hardest part of the base co-op campaign.
Mistakes Even Veterans Make
- Trying to jump the gap. Portal 2 rewards falling from height into a floor portal, not pressing the jump key harder.
- Placing both portals within sight of each other. If you can see both ends at once you have usually not solved anything, because the point is linking two places you cannot see together.
- Walking to the gel instead of aiming it. Gel streams pass through portals, and moving the stream is almost always the intended answer.
- Hunting for a second weapon. There is nothing beyond the portal gun, and searching a chamber for a gun wastes the time you should be spending reading panels.
- Skipping co-op as a solo player. The five course co-op campaign is a completely separate set of puzzles built for four portals, not a rerun of the single player chambers.
Pro Quick Tips
- Portal 2 has no combat, no health bar and no permanent failure state. Turrets and acid simply reset you to the start of the room, so experimenting costs nothing except time.
- Before placing a portal, check the surface material. White panels conduct portals and Aperture's black metal, glass and grating refuse them, and half of a stuck puzzle is the one white panel you have not spotted.
- Speed through a portal is conserved and only redirected. If a jump falls short, move the entry portal to a floor you can reach from higher up rather than trying to jump harder.
- Start with P-Body, the co-op turret, switch to ATLAS, the co-op sphere when ready
- Invest in Portal Gun above everything else
- Clear areas in order: Chapter 1: The Courtesy Call → Chapter 6: The Fall → Chapter 8: The Itch → Chapter 9: The Part Where He Kills You → Co-op Course 5: Mobility Gels. See our maps guide
- Portals only stick to white surfaces + Momentum carries through portals together are stronger than either alone
