Respawn's sequel picks up five years after Fallen Order and hands Cal Kestis five lightsaber stances instead of three, with only two carried at a time. The campaign moves through Coruscant, Koboh, Jedha, the Shattered Moon, Nova Garon and Tanalorr, and Koboh's Rambler's Reach Outpost fills with rescued settlers as you clear Rumors. It reached Steam in April 2023 with a rough PC port that Respawn patched for well over a year.

Starting STAR WARS Jedi: Survivor can feel overwhelming. This guide tells you exactly what to focus on during your first hours so you don't waste time on things that don't matter yet. For the full progression path, see our walkthrough.

What Kind of Game Is This?

STAR WARS Jedi: Survivor is a action game built around Two of five stances equipped at once and Perk slots earned from Essence. The core loop involves mastering these systems to progress through increasingly challenging content.

What to expect: Time investment in learning mechanics, experimentation, and gradual mastery. The game rewards patience and knowledge.

Choosing Your First Role

RoleBeginner RatingWhy
Single Blade stanceExcellent for beginnersBalanced approach
Double-Bladed stanceExcellent for beginnersBalanced approach
Dual Wield stanceExcellent for beginnersBalanced approach
Blaster stanceExcellent for beginnersBalanced approach
Crossguard stanceExcellent for beginnersBalanced approach

Our recommendation: Start with Double-Bladed stance. It offers the most forgiving experience while teaching core mechanics.

Avoid Crossguard stance as your first pick. It requires deep knowledge of game systems to use effectively. Once you're ready, check our classes guide for all options.

First Session Step-by-Step

Step 1: Learn Two of five stances equipped at once

Single, Double-bladed, Dual Wield, Blaster and Crossguard each carry their own skill tree, but Cal only holds two at a time and swaps the pair at a Meditation Point. Every stance has its own parry window, so learning one pair properly beats rotating through all five.

This is the foundation. Spend your first 15-30 minutes getting comfortable with how Two of five stances equipped at once works before worrying about anything else. Our combat guide breaks this down further.

Step 2: Head to Koboh

The hub planet, home to Rambler's Reach Outpost, Pyloon's Saloon and the largest open area in the game. Almost every Rumor, most Force Tears and the majority of perk slots sit here.

Clear the main content here before moving on. Everything teaches fundamentals you'll need later. See our maps guide for all locations.

Step 3: Get Your First Upgrade

Look for Force Confusion: it's the most accessible early upgrade. Turns an enemy against its own side for a short window. The Perplexity perk raises the damage that confused enemy deals, which matters most against Bedlam Raider camps.

Step 4: Understand Perk slots earned from Essence

Cal starts with 3 perk slots and can reach 10 by collecting Essence upgrades and finishing Jedi Meditation Chambers. There are 25 perks in total, most sold by Zee in Pyloon's Saloon or found as blue Essence crystals, and individual perks cost between 0 and 4 slots.

This is the system most new players overlook. Invest time here early. It pays off throughout the entire game.

Step 5: Push to Jedha

A desert world built around the Anchorite Base and the Arid Flats, and the site of Cere's hidden archive. The three Path puzzles here each hand over a perk slot.

Essential Mechanics Explained

Two of five stances equipped at once

Single, Double-bladed, Dual Wield, Blaster and Crossguard each carry their own skill tree, but Cal only holds two at a time and swaps the pair at a Meditation Point. Every stance has its own parry window, so learning one pair properly beats rotating through all five.

Perk slots earned from Essence

Cal starts with 3 perk slots and can reach 10 by collecting Essence upgrades and finishing Jedi Meditation Chambers. There are 25 perks in total, most sold by Zee in Pyloon's Saloon or found as blue Essence crystals, and individual perks cost between 0 and 4 slots.

One Force meter for every power

Force Slow, Push, Pull, Lift and Confusion all drain the same meter, which refills on hits and parries rather than over time. Perks like Flux and Recuperation change how much comes back on its own, and that single choice decides whether a Force-heavy build is playable.

BD-1 stims and Meditation Points

BD-1 holds your healing stims, and Stim Canisters found in the world raise how many he carries. Meditation Points refill stims, respawn nearby enemies, and are the only place to change stances, perks and skill points.

Rumors and the Rambler's Reach hub

Rumors posted in Pyloon's Saloon send Cal after people scattered across Koboh and Jedha. Each rescue adds a vendor, a gardener or a minigame host to Rambler's Reach, and several perk slots only become reachable once those quests are done.

Common Beginner Mistakes

1. Trying to master all five stances at once

Skill points are limited enough that a spread build is mediocre in every fight.

2. Blocking Purge Trooper combos instead of parrying

Block damage stacks fast and a broken guard is a free heavy hit against you.

3. Skipping Meditation Chambers because they look like optional puzzles

They are the main source of perk slots.

4. Hoarding stims for a boss's second phase

Stims refill at every Meditation Point, so use one the moment you drop below half health.

5. Fighting Legendary enemies like the Rancor early

They are tuned for a late-game Cal and will end a chapter 3 build in two hits.

First 5 Hours Checklist

  • Understand Two of five stances equipped at once and Perk slots earned from Essence
  • Choose Double-Bladed stance as starting role
  • Clear Koboh main content
  • Acquire Force Confusion or equivalent upgrade
  • Reach Jedha
  • Do not spread skill points across all five stances. Two fully built stances beat five half built ones, and Meditation Points refund every point for free, so respec whenever a boss walls you.
  • Fellowship costs 4 perk slots but raises how many stims BD-1 carries, and on Jedi Grand Master that is worth more than any damage perk. Slot it once you own at least 7 perk slots.

Tips for New Players

  1. Do not spread skill points across all five stances. Two fully built stances beat five half built ones, and Meditation Points refund every point for free, so respec whenever a boss walls you.
  2. Fellowship costs 4 perk slots but raises how many stims BD-1 carries, and on Jedi Grand Master that is worth more than any damage perk. Slot it once you own at least 7 perk slots.
  3. Force Slow answers almost every red unblockable attack. Slow the wind-up, land two or three hits, then dodge out before the effect expires.
  4. Clear all the Jedi Meditation Chambers before the final chapter. Finishing them unlocks a map upgrade from Koboh's Alignment Control Center that marks every remaining Essence on every planet.
  5. Rumors are not optional if you want perk slots. Rescue Skoova, Pili and the rest, because several slots and the best vendors only appear once those settlers reach Rambler's Reach.
  6. Crossguard's heavy attack breaks guard faster than anything else, but its recovery is brutal. Only throw it when the enemy is already staggered or slowed.
  7. Blaster stance regenerates ammunition through lightsaber hits, so treat the pistol as the finisher rather than the opener. Melee to reload, shoot to kill.
  8. Purge Troopers punish blocking. Parry or dodge instead, because chip damage through a block drains the whole block meter inside one combo.
  9. Priorite Shards are Doma's currency at Rambler's Reach. Spend them on the upgrades she stocks before any cosmetics, because her useful inventory restocks slowly.
  10. If the PC version stutters, turn off motion blur and cap the frame rate. The traversal hitching on Koboh is shader compilation, and a first full lap of the open area smooths most of it out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to play Jedi: Fallen Order first?

The story starts five years after Fallen Order and assumes you know Cal, Cere, Greez and Merrin. Survivor opens with a recap, but the character beats land far harder if you played the first game.

Which two stances should I equip?

Crossguard plus Blaster is the strongest boss-killing pair, and Dual Wield plus Single Blade is the strongest all round pair. Both hold up on Jedi Grand Master, and Meditation Points let you swap for free.

How many perk slots are there?

Cal starts with 3 and can reach 10. The other 7 come from Essence upgrades and Jedi Meditation Chambers, concentrated on Koboh and Jedha, and there are 25 perks competing for them.

Is the PC version still rough?

Launch performance in April 2023 was poor, especially traversal stutter on Koboh. Respawn patched it repeatedly, and current builds run far better, though shader compilation still causes hitching on a first pass through a new area.

What is Tanalorr and can I go there early?

Tanalorr is the hidden world the whole campaign is built around, reachable only through the Koboh Abyss late in the story. There is no way to reach it ahead of schedule.
