State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition is Undead Labs' community survival game, relaunched on 13 March 2020 with the Providence Ridge map folded in alongside Cascade Hills, Drucker County and Meagher Valley, with Trumbull Valley added later. You do not play a character, you play a settlement: every survivor has four core skills in Cardio, Wits, Fighting and Shooting plus a fifth community or quirk skill, and any of them can die permanently. The map-level goal is destroying every Plague Heart, and the run ends when your chosen leader, a Sheriff, Trader, Builder or Warlord, finishes their Legacy missions.
This guide covers everything you need: core mechanics, the best builds, equipment worth investing in, location progression, and the tips that actually make a difference.
Core Mechanics
Community and morale
Survivors are individuals with traits, injuries, fatigue and opinions, and morale is driven by beds, food, standing and how recently someone died. A community running short on beds or Meds generates complaints, then arguments, then departures, so managing the roster is a resource problem rather than a story one.
Plague Hearts and Blood Plague
Plague Hearts sit in buildings across every map and project plague territory around them, filling the area with red mist. Killing one drops plague samples, and a Plague Cure is crafted at any Infirmary from 5 plague samples and 2 Meds. Infected survivors turn if untreated, which makes samples the most important resource on the map early on.
Base facilities and outposts
Home sites are built out with facilities like the Command Center, Infirmary and Workshop, each requiring a survivor with the right community skill to construct or upgrade. Outposts claimed in the world supply resources passively, can be upgraded with influence, and every map has one landmark outpost offering a choice of three larger benefits.
Skills and specializations
Every survivor carries Cardio, Wits, Fighting and Shooting plus an optional fifth skill. At 7 stars a core skill takes a specialization: Cardio into Acrobatics, Backpacking, Marathon or Powerhouse, Wits into Discipline, Resourcefulness, Scouting or Stealth, Fighting into Close Combat, Endurance, Striking or Swordplay, and Shooting into Assault, Gunslinging, Sharpshooting or Weapon Handling. Only two options are offered per survivor, chosen at random.
Leader types and Legacy
Promoting a survivor to leader sets the community's type to Sheriff, Trader, Builder or Warlord, which unlocks that type's exclusive facilities and its Legacy path. Legacy Goals appear while Plague Hearts remain; Legacy Missions only start once every heart on the map is destroyed, and completing them ends the run and banks a boon for the next community.

Equipment Guide
| Equipment | Why It Matters | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Blunt Weapons | Hammers, bats and pipes, which knock zombies down rather than dismembering them. | Survivors with Striking, and crowds where putting several zombies on the ground beats killing one. |
| Edged Weapons | Machetes, axes and swords, trading knockdown for lethality and clean dismemberment. | Survivors with Swordplay, and quiet clearing where each swing needs to actually finish something. |
| Heavy Weapons | Sledgehammers and similar two-handed tools, slow but capable of ending a Juggernaut fight without firing a shot. | Freak fights, and anyone with Powerhouse reducing the stamina cost of melee and executes. |
| Rifles | The ranged backbone of any Plague Heart run, particularly suppressed. | Sharpshooting survivors, Plague Heart assaults and dealing with Ferals before they close. |
| Shotguns | Loud, short ranged and decisive, which makes them a last resort rather than a plan. | Juggernaut and Feral emergencies where a survivor is about to be grabbed. |
Blunt Weapons: Hammers, bats and pipes, which knock zombies down rather than dismembering them. The Striking specialization under Fighting is built for these, adding knockdown and health plus a Grand Slam area attack.
Edged Weapons: Machetes, axes and swords, trading knockdown for lethality and clean dismemberment. Swordplay under Fighting raises lethality and health and unlocks blade executions on standing enemies plus a leg sweep.
Heavy Weapons: Sledgehammers and similar two-handed tools, slow but capable of ending a Juggernaut fight without firing a shot. They cost more stamina per swing, which is why the Powerhouse specialization under Cardio pairs with them.
Rifles: The ranged backbone of any Plague Heart run, particularly suppressed. Sharpshooting under Shooting improves steadiness and gives every shot penetration, so a line of zombies dies to fewer rounds than the ammo counter suggests.
Shotguns: Loud, short ranged and decisive, which makes them a last resort rather than a plan. A Screamer's shout already summons the neighbourhood, and a shotgun fired indoors does the same thing on purpose.

Location Progression
| Location | Level Range | Key Rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Cascade Hills | First community, Green or Standard Zone | Landmark outpost, early Plague Heart clears, first Legacy attempt |
| Drucker County | Second community, Standard or Dread Zone | Vehicle friendly terrain, larger home sites |
| Meagher Valley | Any, good for Builder Legacy | Strong home sites, resource rich outposts |
| Providence Ridge | Standard to Dread Zone | Juggernaut Edition landmark outpost, forested Plague Heart approaches |
| Trumbull Valley | Any, Dread to Lethal Zone for veterans | Returning landmarks, Heartland connections, endgame difficulty runs |
Cascade Hills: One of the original three maps, hilly and forested with tight roads that punish careless driving. It is a reasonable starting map because the terrain limits how many zombies can reach you at once.
Drucker County: Flatter and more open than Cascade Hills, with long sightlines and heavier vehicle use. Open ground means Ferals and Screamers spot you sooner, so it rewards a community that already has Shooting specializations.
Meagher Valley: The third original map, agricultural and comparatively forgiving, with generous resource density. It is the map most often recommended for a first Builder run because the home sites suit heavy facility investment.
Providence Ridge: Added with the Juggernaut Edition itself in March 2020. Dense forest and logging country, which cuts visibility and makes hearing a Feral before seeing one the difference between a scare and a funeral.
Trumbull Valley: The valley from the first State of Decay, added later as a campaign map. It carries the most history for returning players and it is the setting Heartland uses, so many of its landmarks are already familiar.

Tips That Actually Matter
- Craft Plague Cures before anybody needs one. A cure takes 5 plague samples and 2 Meds at any Infirmary, and hunting samples with an infected survivor on a timer is how communities lose people who were otherwise fine.
- Upgrade the Infirmary to level 2 early. At that tier it heals injuries and Trauma on inactive survivors, which means characters recover while you play someone else instead of sitting out for real time hours.
- Rotate survivors deliberately. Fatigue accumulates on whoever you keep playing, and a tired character with reduced stamina is the one who fails a Juggernaut fight, so switch before you have to rather than after.
- Plague Hearts project plague territory around them, so red mist on the map is a warning about the whole neighbourhood rather than just one building. Clear the surrounding zombies before you start hitting the heart, because the heart calls a wave the moment you damage it.
- Specializations only offer two random choices out of four at 7 stars, so plan around what a survivor is offered rather than what you wanted. Discipline under Wits and Sharpshooting under Shooting are the two most consistently useful picks when they appear.
- Outposts are not only resource income. They can be upgraded with influence and remove the need for certain facilities entirely, so one well chosen outpost frees a base slot that would otherwise hold a Still or a Garden.
- Each map has one landmark outpost offering a choice between three larger benefits. Read all three before claiming it, because the choice is made once and it shapes the rest of that community's run.
- Community skills gate facility construction. Chemistry, Computers, Craftsmanship, Gardening, Lichenology, Medicine, Mechanics and Utilities each unlock specific builds and upgrades, and a survivor with an empty fifth slot can learn one from a textbook.
- Do not promote a leader until you know which Legacy you want. The leader type sets your exclusive facilities and your endgame missions, and Legacy Missions only begin once every Plague Heart on the map is destroyed.
- Bring a vehicle to every Plague Heart and park it facing the way out. Juggernauts can end a survivor with a single grab attack, and the reliable counter is leaving before one arrives rather than fighting it on foot.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Hoarding plague samples instead of crafting cures before an infection starts.
- Playing one favourite survivor until fatigue and injuries stack up.
- Attacking a Plague Heart without clearing the surrounding plague territory first.
- Promoting a leader by accident and locking in the wrong Legacy path.
- Fighting a Juggernaut on foot with a blunt weapon and no exit route.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many maps are there?
Five campaign maps: Cascade Hills, Drucker County and Meagher Valley from the original release, Providence Ridge added with the Juggernaut Edition in March 2020, and Trumbull Valley added afterwards. Communities can be moved between them, so a run is not tied to the map it started on.
What does destroying a Plague Heart actually do?
It removes the plague territory around it, drops plague samples used for crafting Plague Cures, and moves you toward the endgame. Legacy Goals appear while hearts remain on the map, and Legacy Missions only begin once every one of them is gone.
Which leader type should I pick first?
Sheriff, because it keeps enclaves friendly and its missions revolve around helping people rather than fighting them. Warlord generates the most hostile encounters and is easier once you already know how Juggernaut and Feral fights resolve.
How do I cure Blood Plague?
Craft a Plague Cure at any Infirmary using 5 plague samples and 2 Meds, then use it on the infected survivor. Samples drop from plague zombies and from destroyed Plague Hearts, so clearing hearts early keeps the cure supply ahead of the infections.
Do survivors really die permanently?
Yes. Death is permanent for that community, along with the survivor's skills, specializations and whatever they were carrying. That is why rotating characters, keeping the Infirmary upgraded and retreating from Juggernauts matters more than any individual fight.
