Tale of Immortal is a Chinese cultivation sandbox drawn from the Classic of Mountains and Seas, and it sold millions of copies in early access before most Western players had heard of it. You start as a nobody in Yukong Village at the Qi Refining stage and climb ten cultivation realms toward Transcendent. The world runs without you: NPCs age, found sects, marry, break through and die whether or not you ever meet them.
These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.
Essential Tips
1. Sword is the least punishing first weapon path because its damage comes from fast basic attacks rather than from a specific rare manual
Sword is the least punishing first weapon path because its damage comes from fast basic attacks rather than from a specific rare manual. Blade and fist both need particular manuals before they feel functional, and finding those on a blind first run is luck.
2. Save immediately before a breakthrough tribulation
Save immediately before a breakthrough tribulation. A failed tribulation costs progress and materials, and the game will happily let you walk into one underprepared.
3. Buy two or three Hua Feng psychic charms and use them from different spots to triangulate the six elemental zones and spirit lock circles
Buy two or three Hua Feng psychic charms and use them from different spots to triangulate the six elemental zones and spirit lock circles. Wandering the region hoping to stumble on them wastes in-game years.
4. Check the monthly notification for spawned elemental bosses instead of hunting blind
Check the monthly notification for spawned elemental bosses instead of hunting blind. A Sky Prayer Talisman forces the matching weather and makes a specific boss appear when you need its Qi Pearl.
5. If a Qi Pearl boss keeps killing you, farm Spirit Pearl Shards and combine them at a workshop instead
If a Qi Pearl boss keeps killing you, farm Spirit Pearl Shards and combine them at a workshop instead. It is slower, but it removes the fight from the Golden Core requirement entirely.
6. Manual grade matters more than your stat sheet
Manual grade matters more than your stat sheet. A higher grade Special Skill in the right click slot out-damages several thousand points of attack, so spend on manual upgrades before gear.
7. Join a sect while you are still in Yong Ning rather than staying independent
Join a sect while you are still in Yong Ning rather than staying independent. Sect rank gates manual libraries and resource halls, and climbing rank later costs far more time than joining early.
8. Elixirs for the even-numbered realms are sold only in the main cities, not by wandering merchants
Elixirs for the even-numbered realms are sold only in the main cities, not by wandering merchants. Plan a city trip before you sit down to break through instead of discovering the gap at the last moment.
9. NPCs cultivate on their own schedule
NPCs cultivate on their own schedule. A rival who was beatable ten in-game years ago may have advanced two stages while you were grinding elsewhere, so do not trust an old power comparison.
10. Mind Skills are passive and easy to leave empty
Mind Skills are passive and easy to leave empty. Filling those slots is free power, and several of them scale better with stage progression than the active manuals you keep staring at.
Advanced Strategies
Build Optimization
The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.
For Sword cultivator (S-Tier):
- Fast left click strikes plus flying sword specials give the most reliable damage curve in the game. Sword needs no rare manual to function, which is why it is the standard recommendation for a first character.
- Core gear: Sword martial art manuals, a dash Motion Skill, damage Mind Skills
- Stat priority: Attack and critical rate first, then attack speed
For Blade cultivator (A-Tier):
- Blade manuals bring wide sweeping arcs and built-in lifesteal, so the build sustains through long fights instead of dodging out of them. It clears demon beast packs faster than sword does.
- Core gear: Blade manuals with lifesteal, health regeneration Mind Skills
- Stat priority: Attack and lifesteal, then maximum health
Mechanic Interactions
Understanding how Tale of Immortal's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.
Cultivation realm breakthroughs + Manual and skill slots: Ten realms run from Qi Refining through Foundation, Qi Condensation, Golden Core, Origin Spirit, Nascent Soul, Soul Formation, Enlightenment, Reborn and Transcendent, each split into early, middle and late stages. Combined with Manual and skill slots, power comes from manuals, not from levels.
Spiritual roots and elemental Qi + Destinies: Fire, Water, Wood, Earth, Wind and Thunder roots decide which spiritual arts scale for you. When paired with Destinies, destinies are permanent character modifiers chosen at creation and gained through play, and they change combat maths rather than flavour text.
Sect membership and sect war scaling: You can join a sect as a disciple, climb through tournaments, take disciples of your own, and eventually run the sect and send it to war against rivals. Sect rank controls access to manual libraries and resource halls that are otherwise locked behind reputation.
Equipment Efficiency
| Equipment | Best Use Case | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sword | First playthroughs, boss duels and any fight where one large health bar is the whole problem. | Fast left click strikes plus flying sword specials give the highest single target damage across the early and mid game. |
| Blade | Clearing demon beast packs and players who would rather trade hits than kite. | Wide sweeping arcs with lifesteal built into many blade manuals. |
| Spear | Players comfortable with spacing who want a reach advantage against melee bosses. | Long reach and strong forward thrusts that punish enemies before they close. |
| Fist | Shield stacking builds at Golden Core and above, where shield values get large enough to make the detonation ridiculous. | Short range and shield centred. |
| Palm | Hybrid casters who need crowd control and grouping rather than burst damage. | Broad area pushes and control effects, weaker on raw numbers but strong at moving enemies where you want them. |
Location Efficiency
Yukong Village (Qi Refining): The tutorial settlement in Bai Yuan where every character starts at Qi Refining. It teaches combat, gathering and manual slots, and most players leave within the first hour.
Yong Ning (Qi Refining to Foundation): The first full region, holding five towns, a main city and several sects. Its elemental zones and Land of the Spirits sites carry a character from Qi Refining through Foundation.
Hua Feng (Qi Condensation to Golden Core): The second region and the difficulty wall most players hit. Its six elemental zones hold the bosses that drop Fire, Water, Thunder, Wind, Earth and Wood Qi Pearls needed for Golden Core.
Yun Mo (Origin Spirit to Nascent Soul): A late region containing the Land of the Beginning, the Land of Beyond, the Land of No Return and the Stairway to Heaven. Enemies here punish any build that skipped manual upgrades in Hua Feng.
Tian Yuan Mountain (Soul Formation and above): The endgame destination the entire cultivation climb points toward. Arriving assumes a finished build rather than a half-upgraded one.
Mistakes Even Veterans Make
- Rushing into Hua Feng at Foundation stage. The region is tuned for Qi Condensation and above, and its beasts delete an underleveled character in two hits.
- Hoarding gold instead of upgrading manuals. Gold does nothing in a cultivation fight; a higher grade Special Skill does everything.
- Breaking through the moment the requirements are met, without checking the tribulation fight or saving first.
- Ignoring your spiritual root when picking spiritual arts, so elemental damage scales off a root you never invested in.
- Dabbling in every weapon path on one character. Manuals are weapon specific, and split investment leaves you weak in all of them.
Pro Quick Tips
- Sword is the least punishing first weapon path because its damage comes from fast basic attacks rather than from a specific rare manual. Blade and fist both need particular manuals before they feel functional, and finding those on a blind first run is luck.
- Save immediately before a breakthrough tribulation. A failed tribulation costs progress and materials, and the game will happily let you walk into one underprepared.
- Buy two or three Hua Feng psychic charms and use them from different spots to triangulate the six elemental zones and spirit lock circles. Wandering the region hoping to stumble on them wastes in-game years.
- Start with Blade cultivator, switch to Sword cultivator when ready
- Invest in Sword above everything else
- Clear areas in order: Yukong Village → Yong Ning → Hua Feng → Yun Mo → Tian Yuan Mountain. See our maps guide
- Cultivation realm breakthroughs + Manual and skill slots together are stronger than either alone
