Ubisoft Paris released Wildlands on 7 March 2017 and handed players an open Bolivia divided into 21 provinces, all of them reachable from the first hour. The Santa Blanca cartel runs the country under El Sueno, and your four man Ghost team of Nomad, Holt, Midas and Weaver works through its structure from the bottom up. You can bring three AI teammates or three other players, and either way the sync shot is the mechanic the whole game is built around.

Combat in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.

Core Combat Mechanics

1. Sync Shot and the four man team

Mark up to three enemies and the squad kills all of them in the same instant. The base skill provides one charge, upgrades raise it, and the sync shot drones added in a later title update fire the shot without your teammates being in position. The difference between clearing a camp silently and fighting an entire province usually comes down to whether the fourth guard was tagged.

Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.

2. The Santa Blanca hierarchy

El Sueno sits above four branches: Security under El Muro, Production under El Yayo, Smuggling under Nidia Flores and Influence under El Cardenal. Each of the 21 provinces answers to a buchon, killing enough buchones in a branch exposes that branch's underboss, and removing the underboss plus every buchon leaves the division head open.

Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.

3. Drone tagging and recon

Every Ghost carries a quadcopter drone that tags enemies through walls and keeps them marked. The Drone tree extends range and battery, adds an EMP burst that kills vehicles, cameras and alarms, and eventually a jamming pulse. Tagging before you shoot is what makes sync shot dependable, because untagged guards are the ones who call Unidad.

Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.

4. Rebel support from the Kataris 26

The Kataris 26 rebels operate in every province and their strength rises when you complete resource missions and destroy cartel supply. Higher strength unlocks support you can call in the field, including rebel scouts that mark enemies for you, a mortar strike, a vehicle drop and an armed rebel ambush. On a five star province, rebel mortars are frequently the difference between a failed assault and a cleared base.

Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.

5. Six skill trees and province collectibles

Skill points come from levelling and from point caches hidden across the 21 provinces, and they feed six trees covering physical ability, weapons, the drone, your squad, items and rebel support. Weapon cases and accessory cases unlock guns permanently, so raiding a five star province like Media Luna at low level for the ACR and the Vector is a legitimate strategy even when its missions are far out of reach.

Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.

How These Mechanics Combine

Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:

Sync Shot and the four man team + The Santa Blanca hierarchy

Mark up to three enemies and the squad kills all of them in the same instant. When combined with The Santa Blanca hierarchy, el sueno sits above four branches: security under el muro, production under el yayo, smuggling under nidia flores and influence under el cardenal. This combination is the core of every effective build.

Drone tagging and recon + Rebel support from the Kataris 26

Every Ghost carries a quadcopter drone that tags enemies through walls and keeps them marked. Paired with Rebel support from the Kataris 26, the kataris 26 rebels operate in every province and their strength rises when you complete resource missions and destroy cartel supply. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.

Six skill trees and province collectibles as a Multiplier

Skill points come from levelling and from point caches hidden across the 21 provinces, and they feed six trees covering physical ability, weapons, the drone, your squad, items and rebel support. Weapon cases and accessory cases unlock guns permanently, so raiding a five star province like Media Luna at low level for the ACR and the Vector is a legitimate strategy even when its missions are far out of reach. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Six skill trees and province collectibles optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques

Damage Optimization

  1. Match your weapons to your role's stat priorities
  2. Exploit Sync Shot and the four man team for maximum damage windows
  3. Chain The Santa Blanca hierarchy and Drone tagging and recon for combo damage
  4. Use Rebel support from the Kataris 26 to create openings

Survivability

  1. Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
  2. Provinces are not level scaled. Their one to five star ratings are fixed, so a five star province at level 5 is exactly as dangerous as it will be at level 30. That fixed difficulty is what makes early collectible raids viable, since the guards do not get tougher just because you did.
  3. Position using Sync Shot and the four man team to control spacing
  4. Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort

Boss Combat

Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.

  • Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
  • Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
  • Build preparation: Swap gear and weapons for specific fights when needed

Common Combat Mistakes

  1. Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
  2. Ignoring The Santa Blanca hierarchy: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
  3. Wrong weapons for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
  4. Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
  5. Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Itacua but will get you killed in Media Luna.
