Parallel 45 Games released Tower Dominion on 7 May 2025. It is a roguelike tower defence where you shape the ground as well as the defence: between waves you expand the map with new terrain zones, and the paths you carve decide where the alien waves walk toward your HQ. Three factions, the Iron Dragoons, the Lions of Ravelski and the Pargan Assault Group, field ten commanders each, and the run ends the moment HQ life reaches zero. Difficulty runs Recruit, Veteran, Elite and War, and clearing War unlocks the endless Frontier mode.

Combat in Tower Dominion rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.

Core Combat Mechanics

1. Battlefronts and HQ entry points

A battlefront is one path running from the map edge to an entrance on your HQ, and a single battlefront can feed more than one entrance. Difficulty sets how many battlefronts you begin with, so raising difficulty is not only tougher enemies, it is more directions to cover with the same starting Supply. Funnelling several battlefronts into one killing ground is the central strategic decision of a run.

Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.

2. The expansion phase and terrain height

Between waves you place new zones onto the map, and Recon pays for rerolling the zones on offer. Elevation matters directly: an Advanced Mirador upgrade grants extra range, and community guidance is to sit Miradors at height 2 or 3 for the range bonus. Creating a dead end path forces a Pit to appear on that tile, so maze building has a built-in cost rather than being free.

Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.

3. Blueprints drawn three at a time

At the end of each wave you choose one blueprint from three offered. Every faction starts with two Miradors and one Sturdy Bunker; the Iron Dragoons add Officers Quarters and the Lions of Ravelski add The Stars Call. Because the draw is limited and random, a run is shaped as much by what never appeared as by what you built.

Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.

4. Doctrines and building doctrines

Doctrines are modifiers picked during the same reinforcement phase, split into three tiers by rarity and labelled with codes such as H33 imperial research, N37 advanced mirador and K38 immortal fortress. Building doctrines only appear once you have placed the matching structure and come as cost reduction or efficiency variants, and after collecting four of them an expertise doctrine can appear.

Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.

5. Supply, Tech and Recon

Supply is the general build currency, starting at 100 and earned from kills, commanders, buildings, neutral buildings and doctrines. Tech is deliberately scarce, starting between 6 and 10 depending on difficulty, and pays for the heavy upgrades on structures like Special Command, Plasma Fence and Mission Control. Recon buys zone rerolls during expansion plus a handful of buildings and upgrades.

Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.

How These Mechanics Combine

Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:

Battlefronts and HQ entry points + The expansion phase and terrain height

A battlefront is one path running from the map edge to an entrance on your HQ, and a single battlefront can feed more than one entrance. When combined with The expansion phase and terrain height, between waves you place new zones onto the map, and recon pays for rerolling the zones on offer. This combination is the core of every effective build.

Blueprints drawn three at a time + Doctrines and building doctrines

At the end of each wave you choose one blueprint from three offered. Paired with Doctrines and building doctrines, doctrines are modifiers picked during the same reinforcement phase, split into three tiers by rarity and labelled with codes such as h33 imperial research, n37 advanced mirador and k38 immortal fortress. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.

Supply, Tech and Recon as a Multiplier

Supply is the general build currency, starting at 100 and earned from kills, commanders, buildings, neutral buildings and doctrines. Tech is deliberately scarce, starting between 6 and 10 depending on difficulty, and pays for the heavy upgrades on structures like Special Command, Plasma Fence and Mission Control. Recon buys zone rerolls during expansion plus a handful of buildings and upgrades. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Supply, Tech and Recon optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques

Damage Optimization

  1. Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities
  2. Exploit Battlefronts and HQ entry points for maximum damage windows
  3. Chain The expansion phase and terrain height and Blueprints drawn three at a time for combo damage
  4. Use Doctrines and building doctrines to create openings

Survivability

  1. Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
  2. Enemies are organised into tiers, with Tier 0 appearing first and a higher tier introduced every 10 waves. That means a defence that comfortably holds wave 19 can collapse at wave 21, so build for the tier break rather than the wave in front of you.
  3. Position using Battlefronts and HQ entry points to control spacing
  4. Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort

Boss Combat

Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.

  • Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
  • Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
  • Build preparation: Swap gear and equipment for specific fights when needed

Common Combat Mistakes

  1. Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
  2. Ignoring The expansion phase and terrain height: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
  3. Wrong equipment for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
  4. Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
  5. Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Main headquarters but will get you killed in Classified site.
