Z1 Battle Royale is effectively dead. Player trackers logged single-digit to low-twenties Steam concurrents through August 2026, and Daybreak Game Company has not shipped meaningful content in years, so a full 150-player lobby is no longer something you will see. The client is still free and still installs, and the game carries a long name history: H1Z1 early access in January 2015, the King of the Kill split in 2016, the Z1 Battle Royale rebrand in March 2019 under NantG Mobile who rolled combat back to a 2017 build, then a handover back to Daybreak that April.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

See our maps guide for detailed area breakdowns.
Phase 1: Getting Started (Pleasant Valley)
The largest town on the map and the traditional hot drop, home to the only police station in the game. Community loot maps have rated it the best loot in H1Z1 since the King of the Kill era, and it is close enough to the map centre that the circle often forms nearby.
Level/Difficulty: Hottest drop on the map, historically 20 or more players in the first minute Key Rewards: Police station rifles and armor, police car spawns, dense residential loot. In 2026 lobbies you will usually land here alone, so treat the crowd figures as history rather than a forecast.
What to Do in Pleasant Valley
- Learn toxic gas ring. Green toxic gas closes toward a shrinking safe circle and drains health fast enough that crossing a wide band without cover usually kills. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Vehicle Nomad as your starting build. See our builds guide for why.
- Verify the lobby is real before you invest an hour. Steam concurrents sat between roughly 5 and 21 players through early August 2026 depending on which tracker you read, which means solo queue can hang indefinitely. Coordinating a private group of friends is the only dependable way to get a match going.
- Acquire your first equipment upgrade: AK-47 or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand toxic gas ring fundamentals
- Vehicle Nomad selected and functional
- Pleasant Valley main content cleared
- Ready for Cranberry
Phase 2: Early Game (Cranberry)
A mid-sized town rated a clear step below Pleasant Valley but well above the outlying farms in the long-running Steam loot guides. Its buildings are spread out enough that you can loot two or three before anyone finds you.
Level/Difficulty: Medium contest, typically a handful of squads Key Rewards: Reliable rifle and armor spawns, decent vehicle coverage. Nothing here is time-gated, so it still fills the same role in an empty lobby.
What to Do in Cranberry
- Work on parachute drop timing. Matches open with an air drop where you free-fall, deploy the chute, then cut it to fall faster before redeploying. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for AK-47 if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Cut your parachute the moment you clear the plane line and redeploy at the last safe height. The 10 seconds you save is the difference between holding the police station shotgun and running at somebody who already has it.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Ranchito Taquito.
- Consider whether Police Station Rusher might suit your playstyle better than Vehicle Nomad.
Phase 2 Checklist
- parachute drop timing integrated into gameplay
- AK-47 acquired
- Cranberry fully cleared
- Ready for Ranchito Taquito
Phase 3: Mid Game (Ranchito Taquito)
An outlying settlement, usually just called Ranchito, that community guides flag as a poor choice unless you land on a vehicle. The loot is fine; the problem is the distance to a circle that rarely forms out here.
Level/Difficulty: Quiet drop, low contest Key Rewards: Uncontested early kit and farm vehicles, at the cost of a long rotation. Bring fuel or expect to run.
What to Do in Ranchito Taquito
- Master vehicle looting. Offroaders, pickup trucks, police cars and ATVs spawn at fixed points and need fuel poured in before they go anywhere. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward AR-15. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
- Pick up a helmet before a second gun. Helmet plus body armor stack in separate slots, and the combination absorbs shots that kill a bare player outright, so a rusher with a pistol and full protection beats a naked player with an AK-47.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in armor and helmet layering for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- vehicle looting mastered
- AR-15 acquired or in progress
- Ranchito Taquito fully cleared
- Ready for Harris Bluffs
Phase 4: Late Game (Harris Bluffs)
Elevated ground on the map edge with the same trade-off as Ranchito: safe looting, punishing rotations. The high ground is genuinely useful if the circle cooperates, which it mostly does not.
Level/Difficulty: Quiet drop, low contest Key Rewards: Sniper sightlines over the approach roads and unpressured early loot. No mode-specific rewards exist here, and none ever did.
What to Do in Harris Bluffs
- Finalize your build. You should be running Police Station Rusher or Vehicle Nomad with optimized gear.
- AR-15 should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- Tap the AR-15 rather than holding the trigger. Its bloom widens with sustained fire, so three deliberate shots at 80 metres land more damage than eight rushed ones, and the semi-automatic action gives you nothing for spraying.
- arcade recoil and bullet travel optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Hillside Villas.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- AR-15 upgraded to max
- Harris Bluffs fully cleared
- Ready for Hillside Villas
Phase 5: Endgame (Hillside Villas)
A residential neighbourhood added east of Pleasant Valley in the King of the Kill map rework, alongside Morton Distribution and Henninger Plaza. It gives you Pleasant Valley adjacency without the police station bloodbath.
Level/Difficulty: Medium contest, popular with players avoiding the hot drop Key Rewards: House-by-house loot with a short drive into Pleasant Valley afterwards. Useful as a second stop rather than a destination.
What to Do in Hillside Villas
- Hillside Villas tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- Learn where the .308 drops at each range on the Harris Bluffs approach roads. Bullet travel is real in Z1, so a target sprinting at 150 metres needs both lead and elevation, and getting that wrong just reveals your ridge.
- The endgame loop: run Hillside Villas, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Shotgun Ambusher for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where arcade recoil and bullet travel mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Hillside Villas fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Treating Z1 as a live game and grinding ranked progression that nobody is competing for
- Landing at Pleasant Valley police station with no plan for the second minute, when the loot is gone and the town is empty
- Holding the AR-15 trigger down, which widens bloom and wastes .223 ammo that does not respawn
- Skipping a helmet because you found a better rifle, then losing a fight to one headshot
- Driving into the final two circles, since engine noise carries far further than footsteps
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
