Z1 Battle Royale is effectively dead. Player trackers logged single-digit to low-twenties Steam concurrents through August 2026, and Daybreak Game Company has not shipped meaningful content in years, so a full 150-player lobby is no longer something you will see. The client is still free and still installs, and the game carries a long name history: H1Z1 early access in January 2015, the King of the Kill split in 2016, the Z1 Battle Royale rebrand in March 2019 under NantG Mobile who rolled combat back to a 2017 build, then a handover back to Daybreak that April.
Your choice of equipment defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.
Equipment Rankings
| Equipment | Tier | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| AR-15 | S | Every range from 20 to 120 metres, and the gun you should keep even after finding an AK-47 | Semi-automatic rifle chambered for . |
| AK-47 | A | Close to medium fights inside towns where two or three shots settle it | Higher per-shot damage than the AR-15 with 7. |
| Combat Shotgun | A | Clearing the Pleasant Valley police station and holding farmhouse doorways | Semi-automatic close-range option added as an alternative to the pump, with a faster fire rate and a tighter pattern. |
| .308 Hunting Rifle | B | Open ground between towns and punishing players caught in the gas | Bolt-action long rifle with heavy damage and pronounced bullet drop, so hits demand you lead the target and aim high rather than centre it. |
| Molotov Cocktail | B | Forcing a player out of a single-room building without entering it | Thrown incendiary that puts a burning pool on the floor and denies a room for several seconds. |
S-Tier: AR-15
Semi-automatic rifle chambered for .223 rounds, with bloom that punishes fast clicking and drop that matters past roughly 80 metres. It is the reference weapon the whole game is balanced around.

Higher per-shot damage than the AR-15 with 7.62 ammunition and a harder kick, which makes it stronger in a short exchange and worse in a long one. Ammo is scarcer than .223 on most loot routes.

Equipment Progression Path
The order you should acquire equipment as you progress:
- Starting gear → Enough to clear Pleasant Valley
- AK-47 → Your first real upgrade, available early
- Combat Shotgun → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
- AR-15 → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
- Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous
Equipment Tips
- Always upgrade your primary equipment before diversifying. One strong option beats three mediocre ones.
- Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
- Verify the lobby is real before you invest an hour. Steam concurrents sat between roughly 5 and 21 players through early August 2026 depending on which tracker you read, which means solo queue can hang indefinitely. Coordinating a private group of friends is the only dependable way to get a match going.
- Check our tier list for how equipment rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
