Back 4 Blood is Turtle Rock's four player co-op shooter about eight Cleaners holding out against the Ridden from a base called Fort Hope. The campaign runs 33 missions across four Acts and ten chapters, and the part that separates it from the studio's earlier work is the card layer: you bring a 15 card deck, draw one card between levels, and the game's Director answers with Corruption Cards that change the level you are about to play. Difficulty runs Recruit, Veteran, Nightmare and No Hope, and by Nightmare a deck that does not match your role is the reason runs end.
Boss fights are where Back 4 Blood tests everything you've learned. This guide covers strategies for bosses across all areas, organized by progression order. For general combat techniques, see our combat guide.

Fort Hope Bosses
Area difficulty: Easy Recommended level: Between runs, all difficulties Recommended role: Holly with M249
Strategy
The first bosses teach core combat mechanics. Focus on learning patterns rather than dealing damage. A deck holds up to 15 cards and is drawn in the order you set, not shuffled. This is your primary tool here.
Key tips:
- Don't rush. Learn the attack patterns first.
- Use Fifteen card decks to create safe windows.
- M249 is enough to handle everything here.
Act 1: The Devil's Return Bosses
Area difficulty: Moderate Recommended level: Recruit to Veteran, 13 missions Recommended role: Holly with M249
Strategy
Early game bosses test your understanding of Corruption Cards. Players who skipped learning this mechanic will hit a wall here.
Key tips:
- Corruption Cards is critical for these fights.
- Farm M249 upgrades if you're struggling.
- Consider switching to Holly if your current setup isn't working.
Act 2: The Armory Bosses
Area difficulty: Hard Recommended level: Veteran, 10 missions Recommended role: Walker with AA12
Strategy
Mid-game bosses are the major skill check. They combine multiple mechanics and punish players who rely on a single strategy.
Key tips:
- You need both Fifteen card decks and Trauma damage mastery.
- AA12 makes a significant difference. Get it before attempting these.
- See our combat guide for advanced techniques.
Act 3: Dr. Rogers Neighborhood Bosses
Area difficulty: Very Hard Recommended level: Veteran to Nightmare, 9 missions Recommended role: Walker with AA12
Strategy
Late-game bosses are serious challenges. Build optimization matters as much as mechanical skill.
Key tips:
- Make sure your build is fully optimized.
- AA12 at max upgrade is recommended.
- Study each boss's attack patterns. Most have 2-3 phases.
Act 4: The Abomination Bosses
Area difficulty: Extreme Recommended level: Nightmare and No Hope, 1 mission Recommended role: Walker with AA12
Strategy
Endgame bosses are the ultimate test. They require mastery of all combat systems and an optimized build.
Key tips:
- Top-tier build with best-in-slot gear is mandatory.
- Master every mechanic. See our combat guide.
- These fights reward patience and pattern recognition above all else.
General Boss Tips
- Learn before you fight: Spend your first attempt observing attack patterns. Don't try to win on attempt one.
- Match your build: Some bosses favor certain builds over others. Don't be afraid to switch.
- Upgrade your weapons: A max-upgraded AA12 trivializes fights that seem impossible with weaker gear.
- Use Fifteen card decks: The core combat mechanic is your best defensive tool in every boss fight.
- Check the walkthrough: Our walkthrough tells you when you're ready for each boss.
