Back 4 Blood is Turtle Rock's four player co-op shooter about eight Cleaners holding out against the Ridden from a base called Fort Hope. The campaign runs 33 missions across four Acts and ten chapters, and the part that separates it from the studio's earlier work is the card layer: you bring a 15 card deck, draw one card between levels, and the game's Director answers with Corruption Cards that change the level you are about to play. Difficulty runs Recruit, Veteran, Nightmare and No Hope, and by Nightmare a deck that does not match your role is the reason runs end.
Back 4 Blood features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.
Area Progression Order
| Order | Location | Difficulty | Key Rewards | Recommended Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fort Hope | Between runs, all difficulties | Card unlocks via supply lines, deck building, Cleaner selection | Holly |
| 2 | Act 1: The Devil's Return | Recruit to Veteran, 13 missions | Early supply points, first full deck, Ridden identification | Holly |
| 3 | Act 2: The Armory | Veteran, 10 missions | Mid tier cards, weapon attachment access, copper discipline | Walker |
| 4 | Act 3: Dr. Rogers Neighborhood | Veteran to Nightmare, 9 missions | Late campaign cards, Nightmare preparation | Walker |
| 5 | Act 4: The Abomination | Nightmare and No Hope, 1 mission | Campaign completion, highest supply point payouts | Walker |
Fort Hope: Starting Area
The hub between runs, where decks are built, supply lines are spent and cards are unlocked. Time spent here decides whether Veteran is playable, since an unbuilt deck is the single biggest reason early runs stall.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Between runs, all difficulties |
| Key Rewards | Card unlocks via supply lines, deck building, Cleaner selection |
| Recommended Role | Holly |
| Key Weapons | M249 |
What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of Fifteen card decks. This is where you practice without heavy punishment.
- Collect starting resources and your first weapons upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to Act 1: The Devil's Return.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
Act 1: The Devil's Return: Early Game
Thirteen missions across four chapters, The Devil's Return, Search and Rescue, The Dark Before the Dawn and Blue Dog Hollow. It teaches special Ridden one at a time and is where a first deck gets tested.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Recruit to Veteran, 13 missions |
| Key Rewards | Early supply points, first full deck, Ridden identification |
| Recommended Role | Holly |
| Key Weapons | M249 |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering Corruption Cards. It's critical from this point on.
- Farm for M249 if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in Act 2: The Armory.
Act 2: The Armory: Mid Game
Ten missions across The Armory, Plan B and Job 10:22. Corruption Cards start stacking meaningfully here and the objectives run longer, which punishes teams that spent all their copper on attachments and none on healing.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Veteran, 10 missions |
| Key Rewards | Mid tier cards, weapon attachment access, copper discipline |
| Recommended Role | Walker |
| Key Weapons | M249 |
What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- AA12 becomes accessible here. Prioritize getting it.
- Master Trauma damage for the boss encounters.
- Check our boss guide if you get stuck.
Act 3: Dr. Rogers Neighborhood: Late Game
Nine missions across Dr. Rogers Neighborhood and Remnants, including the T-5 level. This is where a deck built for the wrong role stops working and role coverage across all four Cleaners becomes mandatory.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Veteran to Nightmare, 9 missions |
| Key Rewards | Late campaign cards, Nightmare preparation |
| Recommended Role | Walker |
| Key Weapons | AA12 |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- AA12 should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- Special Ridden and hordes mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into Act 4: The Abomination.
Act 4: The Abomination: Endgame
A single long mission and the campaign's boss encounter. It is one level rather than a chapter, so the whole run is decided by the cards drawn across the previous 32 missions.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Nightmare and No Hope, 1 mission |
| Key Rewards | Campaign completion, highest supply point payouts |
| Recommended Role | Walker |
| Key Weapons | AA12 |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with Jim for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order: Fort Hope → Act 1: The Devil's Return → Act 2: The Armory → Act 3: Dr. Rogers Neighborhood → Act 4: The Abomination. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
- Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your weapons: Some areas favor different weapons types.
- Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
