NPC Studio's pixel-art farming sim entered Early Access on 5 August 2024 and reached 1.0 exactly two years later, on 5 August 2026. An earthquake has cracked the town open and left magic leaking out of it, and you are handed the overgrown Sweetwater Farm in exchange for helping put Mistria back together. Nine skills run to level 60 apiece, the mines drop 100 floors, and 12 of the 30-plus villagers can be married.
Starting Fields of Mistria can feel overwhelming. This guide tells you exactly what to focus on during your first hours so you don't waste time on things that don't matter yet. For the full progression path, see our walkthrough.
What Kind of Game Is This?
Fields of Mistria is a simulation game built around Nine skills to level 60 and Essence perks at Caldarus' shrine. The core loop involves mastering these systems to progress through increasingly challenging content.
What to expect: Time investment in learning mechanics, experimentation, and gradual mastery. The game rewards patience and knowledge.
Choosing Your First Build
| Build | Beginner Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Farming | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Mining | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Fishing | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Combat | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Ranching | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
Our recommendation: Start with Mining. It offers the most forgiving experience while teaching core mechanics.
Avoid Ranching as your first pick. It requires deep knowledge of game systems to use effectively. Once you're ready, check our classes guide for all options.
First Session Step-by-Step
Step 1: Learn Nine skills to level 60
Combat, Farming, Fishing, Mining, Archaeology, Cooking, Ranching, Woodcrafting and Blacksmithing each track separately and each climbs to level 60. Higher levels open better recipes and crafting options, so the skill you neglect quietly locks content behind it.
This is the foundation. Spend your first 15-30 minutes getting comfortable with how Nine skills to level 60 works before worrying about anything else. Our combat guide breaks this down further.
Step 2: Head to Sweetwater Farm
The overgrown homestead you inherit, cleared with the axe and hoe over your first season. Caldarus' statue sits here and handles perks for seven of the nine skills, so you will return to it constantly.
Clear the main content here before moving on. Everything teaches fundamentals you'll need later. See our maps guide for all locations.
Step 3: Get Your First Upgrade
Look for Iron Sword: it's the most accessible early upgrade. Crafted with four Iron Ingots at Blacksmithing level 14. This is the tier where the Tide Caverns stop being dangerous and the Deep Earth becomes approachable.
Step 4: Understand Essence perks at Caldarus' shrine
Every skill has four perk tiers unlocking at levels 1, 15, 30 and 45, and you pay for them with Essence collected around the valley. Caldarus' statue on the farm handles seven skills while the Dragon Statue down in the mines handles Mining and Combat.
This is the system most new players overlook. Invest time here early. It pays off throughout the entire game.
Step 5: Push to The Narrows
A distinct outdoor area beyond the town proper, with its own foraging and fishing spots. It is one of the areas that changes visibly with the seasons, so what is worth collecting there rotates.
Essential Mechanics Explained
Nine skills to level 60
Combat, Farming, Fishing, Mining, Archaeology, Cooking, Ranching, Woodcrafting and Blacksmithing each track separately and each climbs to level 60. Higher levels open better recipes and crafting options, so the skill you neglect quietly locks content behind it.
Essence perks at Caldarus' shrine
Every skill has four perk tiers unlocking at levels 1, 15, 30 and 45, and you pay for them with Essence collected around the valley. Caldarus' statue on the farm handles seven skills while the Dragon Statue down in the mines handles Mining and Combat.
Six-tier tool upgrades
Pickaxe, axe, hoe, watering can, fishing rod, shovel and bug net all run Worn, Copper, Iron, Silver, Gold and Mistril. Upgrades come from Blacksmithing at skill levels between 4 and 28, and each tier meaningfully changes how much ground a single energy bar covers.
Five mine biomes to floor 100
The Upper Mines run floors 1 to 19, the Tide Caverns 21 to 39, the Deep Earth 41 to 59, the Lava Caves 61 to 79 and the Ancient Ruins 81 to 99, with floor 100 at the bottom. Each biome is gated by a seal and demands better gear than the last.
Heart events and marriage
Twelve of the villagers can be romanced regardless of which character you play: Adeline, Balor, Caldarus, Celine, Eiland, Hayden, Juniper, March, Reina, Ryis, Seridia and Valen. Each has a schedule, favourite gifts and a chain of heart events leading to marriage and children.
Common Beginner Mistakes
1. Replanting single-harvest crops every few days when a regrowing crop in the same slot would pay more for less work
2. Spending Essence on level 1 perks immediately, then having nothing banked when the level 15 tier unlocks
3. Diving past a mine seal on the strength of a sword one tier too low and losing the run's ore on the way back up
4. Ignoring Blacksmithing until mid game, which leaves every tool and weapon stuck at Copper long after the mines have moved on
5. Gifting every villager a little and no villager consistently, which stalls all 12 relationship tracks at once
First 5 Hours Checklist
- Understand Nine skills to level 60 and Essence perks at Caldarus' shrine
- Choose Mining as starting build
- Clear Sweetwater Farm main content
- Acquire Iron Sword or equivalent upgrade
- Reach The Narrows
- Plant turnips on day one. They cost almost nothing, mature in four days and can be replanted back to back, which gives you cash flow while slower crops are still in the ground.
- Favour crops that regrow over crops you replant. Strawberries in spring and cranberries in fall pay the seed cost once, and cranberries in particular mature in five days and then yield every three.
Tips for New Players
- Plant turnips on day one. They cost almost nothing, mature in four days and can be replanted back to back, which gives you cash flow while slower crops are still in the ground.
- Favour crops that regrow over crops you replant. Strawberries in spring and cranberries in fall pay the seed cost once, and cranberries in particular mature in five days and then yield every three.
- Fall is the strongest farming season by a clear margin, with five high-profit crops available. Plan the summer around building the infrastructure you want in place before it arrives.
- Bank Essence rather than spending it on the first perk you can afford. The tiers at levels 15 and 30 are far more useful than the level 1 options and Essence is not plentiful early.
- Remember there are two perk statues, not one. Caldarus' statue on the farm covers Farming, Fishing, Archaeology, Cooking, Ranching, Woodcrafting and Blacksmithing, while the Dragon Statue in the mines covers Mining and Combat.
- Upgrade the watering can before the hoe. Watering is the daily action that eats the most energy, and each tier covers noticeably more tiles per swing.
- Push Blacksmithing early even though it feels indirect. Every tool tier sits between skill levels 4 and 28 and the sword tiers run from level 8 to level 32, so a low Blacksmithing skill caps your progress everywhere at once.
- Use the bug net to deflect projectiles in the deeper mines. It is a defensive tool most players never realise they have, and it saves the healing food you would otherwise burn closing distance.
- Open treasure chests in every biome rather than rushing the descent. The Scrap Metal, Verdigris, Crystal and Tarnished Gold swords come from chests and Mimics in the Upper Mines, Tide Caverns, Deep Earth and Lava Caves respectively.
- Learn a few villagers' favourite gifts rather than spreading gifts thinly. All 12 romance candidates are available to any player character, and concentrated gifting reaches heart events far faster than scattering.
