NPC Studio's pixel-art farming sim entered Early Access on 5 August 2024 and reached 1.0 exactly two years later, on 5 August 2026. An earthquake has cracked the town open and left magic leaking out of it, and you are handed the overgrown Sweetwater Farm in exchange for helping put Mistria back together. Nine skills run to level 60 apiece, the mines drop 100 floors, and 12 of the 30-plus villagers can be married.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Phase 1: Getting Started (Sweetwater Farm)

The overgrown homestead you inherit, cleared with the axe and hoe over your first season. Caldarus' statue sits here and handles perks for seven of the nine skills, so you will return to it constantly.

Level/Difficulty: Year one onward Key Rewards: Crop and animal income, Caldarus' shrine for Essence perks, farmhouse and building customisation

What to Do in Sweetwater Farm

  1. Learn Nine skills to level 60. Combat, Farming, Fishing, Mining, Archaeology, Cooking, Ranching, Woodcrafting and Blacksmithing each track separately and each climbs to level 60. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Mining as your starting build. See our builds guide for why.
  3. Plant turnips on day one. They cost almost nothing, mature in four days and can be replanted back to back, which gives you cash flow while slower crops are still in the ground.
  4. Acquire your first equipment upgrade: Iron Sword or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand Nine skills to level 60 fundamentals
  • Mining selected and functional
  • Sweetwater Farm main content cleared
  • Ready for The Narrows

Phase 2: Early Game (The Narrows)

A distinct outdoor area beyond the town proper, with its own foraging and fishing spots. It is one of the areas that changes visibly with the seasons, so what is worth collecting there rotates.

Level/Difficulty: Accessible early Key Rewards: Seasonal forage, fishing spots, gathering material for Woodcrafting

What to Do in The Narrows

  1. Work on Essence perks at Caldarus' shrine. Every skill has four perk tiers unlocking at levels 1, 15, 30 and 45, and you pay for them with Essence collected around the valley. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Iron Sword if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. Favour crops that regrow over crops you replant. Strawberries in spring and cranberries in fall pay the seed cost once, and cranberries in particular mature in five days and then yield every three.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to The Eastern Road.
  5. Consider whether Farming might suit your playstyle better than Mining.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • Essence perks at Caldarus' shrine integrated into gameplay
  • Iron Sword acquired
  • The Narrows fully cleared
  • Ready for The Eastern Road

Phase 3: Mid Game (The Eastern Road)

The route running east out of Mistria, connecting the town to areas the earthquake affected. Villager schedules take several characters along it, which makes it useful for gift deliveries as well as gathering.

Level/Difficulty: Accessible early Key Rewards: Forage, villager encounters for relationship building, connections to outlying areas

What to Do in The Eastern Road

  1. Master Six-tier tool upgrades. Pickaxe, axe, hoe, watering can, fishing rod, shovel and bug net all run Worn, Copper, Iron, Silver, Gold and Mistril. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward Worn Sword. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
  3. Fall is the strongest farming season by a clear margin, with five high-profit crops available. Plan the summer around building the infrastructure you want in place before it arrives.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in Five mine biomes to floor 100 for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • Six-tier tool upgrades mastered
  • Worn Sword acquired or in progress
  • The Eastern Road fully cleared
  • Ready for The Western Ruins

Phase 4: Late Game (The Western Ruins)

Ancient stonework west of the town, tied to the magic that surfaced after the earthquake. Combat encounters and archaeology sites overlap here, so bring a sword as well as a shovel.

Level/Difficulty: After the Worn Sword, ideally with Copper or better Key Rewards: Artifacts for the museum, combat experience, story progression on the town restoration

What to Do in The Western Ruins

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Farming or Mining with optimized gear.
  2. Worn Sword should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. Bank Essence rather than spending it on the first perk you can afford. The tiers at levels 15 and 30 are far more useful than the level 1 options and Essence is not plentiful early.
  4. Heart events and marriage optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into The Mines.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • Worn Sword upgraded to max
  • The Western Ruins fully cleared
  • Ready for The Mines

Phase 5: Endgame (The Mines)

One hundred floors split into the Upper Mines, Tide Caverns, Deep Earth, Lava Caves and Ancient Ruins, each behind a seal. The Dragon Statue here manages Mining and Combat perks, separately from the farm statue.

Level/Difficulty: Floors 1 to 19 early, floor 100 as a late-game goal Key Rewards: Copper through Mistril ore, treasure chest swords, Essence for perks, Mimic encounters

What to Do in The Mines

  1. The Mines tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Remember there are two perk statues, not one. Caldarus' statue on the farm covers Farming, Fishing, Archaeology, Cooking, Ranching, Woodcrafting and Blacksmithing, while the Dragon Statue in the mines covers Mining and Combat.
  3. The endgame loop: run The Mines, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Ranching for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where Heart events and marriage mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • The Mines fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Replanting single-harvest crops every few days when a regrowing crop in the same slot would pay more for less work.
  • Spending Essence on level 1 perks immediately, then having nothing banked when the level 15 tier unlocks.
  • Diving past a mine seal on the strength of a sword one tier too low and losing the run's ore on the way back up.
  • Ignoring Blacksmithing until mid game, which leaves every tool and weapon stuck at Copper long after the mines have moved on.
  • Gifting every villager a little and no villager consistently, which stalls all 12 relationship tracks at once.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Plant turnips on day one. They cost almost nothing, mature in four days and can be replanted back to back, which gives you cash flow while slower crops are still in the ground.
  2. Favour crops that regrow over crops you replant. Strawberries in spring and cranberries in fall pay the seed cost once, and cranberries in particular mature in five days and then yield every three.
  3. Fall is the strongest farming season by a clear margin, with five high-profit crops available. Plan the summer around building the infrastructure you want in place before it arrives.
  4. Bank Essence rather than spending it on the first perk you can afford. The tiers at levels 15 and 30 are far more useful than the level 1 options and Essence is not plentiful early.
  5. Remember there are two perk statues, not one. Caldarus' statue on the farm covers Farming, Fishing, Archaeology, Cooking, Ranching, Woodcrafting and Blacksmithing, while the Dragon Statue in the mines covers Mining and Combat.
