Hell Let Loose puts 100 players into 50 versus 50 WWII combined arms battles modelled on real European and North African battlefields. A Warfare match runs 90 minutes over five strongpoints, and no side wins it without garrisons, supply trucks and somebody willing to command. Twenty maps are in rotation as of mid 2026, from Omaha Beach to Stalingrad.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.
Quick Rankings

S-Tier: Officer
Squad leader role that places outposts and garrisons, carrying the squad's entire spawn logic on its back.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | M1 Garand | The US Army's standard semi automatic rifle, eight rounds per clip, with strong stopping power and heavy recoil between shots. |
| Core Gear | Binoculars, watch for building, service rifle, smoke grenades | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Communication then map reading then placement discipline | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Five strongpoint tug of war | Warfare gives each side the two strongpoints nearest its HQ and leaves the middle neutral. |
How to Play Officer
Place an outpost on every push, call the garrison spot early, and keep the squad grouped inside your radius
Squad leader role that places outposts and garrisons, carrying the squad's entire spawn logic on its back.
Why this role works: M1 Garand does the damage and Five strongpoint tug of war keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. Core gear like Binoculars, watch for building, service rifle, smoke grenades pushes it further. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Clear stat priority (Communication then map reading then placement discipline) makes gearing straightforward
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Rifleman
The uncapped infantry role, the only one always available, carrying the most spare ammunition of any line slot.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Thompson M1A1 | American submachine gun with a high rate of fire and a short effective range that punishes anyone who takes it into the open. |
| Core Gear | M1 Garand, Kar98k or Mosin depending on faction, grenades | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Positioning then aim then ammunition discipline | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Garrisons and outposts as spawns | Garrisons are team wide spawn points costing 50 supplies in friendly territory and 100 in enemy territory. |
How to Play Rifleman
Hold sectors, resupply the Officer, and take the slot nobody else wants when the squad fills up
The uncapped infantry role, the only one always available, carrying the most spare ammunition of any line slot.
Why this role works: Pair Thompson M1A1 with Garrisons and outposts as spawns and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. Core gear like M1 Garand, Kar98k or Mosin depending on faction, grenades pushes it further. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Clear stat priority (Positioning then aim then ammunition discipline) makes gearing straightforward
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
S-Tier: Medic
Revives downed teammates before the redeploy timer burns them, which is the difference between a push continuing and a push stalling.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Karabiner 98k | German bolt action rifle, slow to cycle but lethal at range, killing in a single hit across most of its effective envelope. |
| Core Gear | Bandages, morphine, carbine or service rifle | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Awareness then survivability then aim | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Manpower, munitions and fuel | Each team starts with 500 of every resource and generates 30 of each per minute with no nodes built. |
How to Play Medic
Stay one layer behind the front, bandage before moving, and never revive under direct fire
Revives downed teammates before the redeploy timer burns them, which is the difference between a push continuing and a push stalling.
Why this role works: Manpower, munitions and fuel covers the gap Karabiner 98k leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. Core gear like Bandages, morphine, carbine or service rifle pushes it further. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Clear stat priority (Awareness then survivability then aim) makes gearing straightforward
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Engineer
Builds the resource nodes that raise team income, plus defences, repairs and anti tank emplacements.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | MG42 | The German general purpose machine gun with an extreme rate of fire, only accurate when deployed on its bipod or a mount. |
| Core Gear | Wrench, satchel charges, building supplies, rifle | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Node placement then defensive value then survivability | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Fourteen roles across four categories | Fourteen roles split across Command, Infantry, Armor and Recon, from Commander and Officer down to Crewman, Sniper and Spotter. |
How to Play Engineer
Build resource nodes early in safe sectors, then fortify whichever strongpoint your team intends to hold
Builds the resource nodes that raise team income, plus defences, repairs and anti tank emplacements.
Why this role works: This one leans on Fourteen roles across four categories rather than raw numbers, and MG42 is what makes that trade pay off. Core gear like Wrench, satchel charges, building supplies, rifle pushes it further. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Clear stat priority (Node placement then defensive value then survivability) makes gearing straightforward
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge
S-Tier: Tank Commander
Leads the armour crew, spots targets through binoculars and calls the shots for the gunner and driver.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | PPSh-41 | Soviet submachine gun available in box and drum magazine versions, with the drum favoured for sustained close range fire. |
| Core Gear | Tank with a full crew, binoculars, sidearm | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Crew coordination then map awareness then gunnery | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Commander tactical abilities | The Commander spends resources from the tactical map, including a 100 supply airdrop that costs 50 munitions on a two minute cooldown, and a remote garrison dismantle costing 100 manpower on a ten minute cooldown. |
How to Play Tank Commander
Fight from hull down positions, never push a town without infantry, and reverse out before the second anti tank hit lands
Leads the armour crew, spots targets through binoculars and calls the shots for the gunner and driver.
Why this role works: PPSh-41 and Commander tactical abilities pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. Core gear like Tank with a full crew, binoculars, sidearm pushes it further. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Clear stat priority (Crew coordination then map awareness then gunnery) makes gearing straightforward
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Rifleman: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Officer once you understand core mechanics and have access to M1 Garand
- Keep a Medic setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Tank Commander for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary weapon first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Garrisons cost 50 supplies in friendly territory and 100 in enemy territory. Build the cheap ones behind your line and only pay double when a forward garrison genuinely opens a push.
- A garrison locks out entirely when an enemy is within 15 metres and shows a red ping from 50 metres. If your spawn suddenly goes dark, somebody is standing on it.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
