Hell Let Loose puts 100 players into 50 versus 50 WWII combined arms battles modelled on real European and North African battlefields. A Warfare match runs 90 minutes over five strongpoints, and no side wins it without garrisons, supply trucks and somebody willing to command. Twenty maps are in rotation as of mid 2026, from Omaha Beach to Stalingrad.

Combat in Hell Let Loose rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.

Core Combat Mechanics

1. Five strongpoint tug of war

Warfare gives each side the two strongpoints nearest its HQ and leaves the middle neutral. Points must be captured in order across a 90 minute timer, and you win by holding the centre at time or by taking every enemy sector.

Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.

2. Garrisons and outposts as spawns

Garrisons are team wide spawn points costing 50 supplies in friendly territory and 100 in enemy territory. Outposts are free for Officers to place but only the 2 to 5 players in that squad can use them.

Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.

3. Manpower, munitions and fuel

Each team starts with 500 of every resource and generates 30 of each per minute with no nodes built. Captured sectors and engineer built nodes are the only ways to raise that income.

Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.

4. Fourteen roles across four categories

Fourteen roles split across Command, Infantry, Armor and Recon, from Commander and Officer down to Crewman, Sniper and Spotter. Most of them are capped per squad.

Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.

5. Commander tactical abilities

The Commander spends resources from the tactical map, including a 100 supply airdrop that costs 50 munitions on a two minute cooldown, and a remote garrison dismantle costing 100 manpower on a ten minute cooldown.

Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.

How These Mechanics Combine

Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:

Five strongpoint tug of war + Garrisons and outposts as spawns

Warfare gives each side the two strongpoints nearest its HQ and leaves the middle neutral. When combined with Garrisons and outposts as spawns, garrisons are team wide spawn points costing 50 supplies in friendly territory and 100 in enemy territory. This combination is the core of every effective build.

Manpower, munitions and fuel + Fourteen roles across four categories

Each team starts with 500 of every resource and generates 30 of each per minute with no nodes built. Paired with Fourteen roles across four categories, fourteen roles split across command, infantry, armor and recon, from commander and officer down to crewman, sniper and spotter. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.

Commander tactical abilities as a Multiplier

The Commander spends resources from the tactical map, including a 100 supply airdrop that costs 50 munitions on a two minute cooldown, and a remote garrison dismantle costing 100 manpower on a ten minute cooldown. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Commander tactical abilities optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Combat by Role

Each role approaches combat differently:

Officer (S-Tier)

Combat approach: Place an outpost on every push, call the garrison spot early, and keep the squad grouped inside your radius Key weapons: M1 Garand Primary mechanic: Five strongpoint tug of war

Squad leader role that places outposts and garrisons, carrying the squad's entire spawn logic on its back. Full setup in our builds guide.

Rifleman (A-Tier)

Combat approach: Hold sectors, resupply the Officer, and take the slot nobody else wants when the squad fills up Key weapons: Thompson M1A1 Primary mechanic: Garrisons and outposts as spawns

The uncapped infantry role, the only one always available, carrying the most spare ammunition of any line slot. Full setup in our builds guide.

Medic (S-Tier)

Combat approach: Stay one layer behind the front, bandage before moving, and never revive under direct fire Key weapons: Karabiner 98k Primary mechanic: Manpower, munitions and fuel

Revives downed teammates before the redeploy timer burns them, which is the difference between a push continuing and a push stalling. Full setup in our builds guide.

Engineer (A-Tier)

Combat approach: Build resource nodes early in safe sectors, then fortify whichever strongpoint your team intends to hold Key weapons: MG42 Primary mechanic: Fourteen roles across four categories

Builds the resource nodes that raise team income, plus defences, repairs and anti tank emplacements. Full setup in our builds guide.

Tank Commander (S-Tier)

Combat approach: Fight from hull down positions, never push a town without infantry, and reverse out before the second anti tank hit lands Key weapons: PPSh-41 Primary mechanic: Commander tactical abilities

Leads the armour crew, spots targets through binoculars and calls the shots for the gunner and driver. Full setup in our builds guide.

Advanced Combat Techniques

Damage Optimization

  1. Match your weapons to your role's stat priorities
  2. Exploit Five strongpoint tug of war for maximum damage windows
  3. Chain Garrisons and outposts as spawns and Manpower, munitions and fuel for combo damage
  4. Use Fourteen roles across four categories to create openings

Survivability

  1. Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
  2. Garrisons cost 50 supplies in friendly territory and 100 in enemy territory. Build the cheap ones behind your line and only pay double when a forward garrison genuinely opens a push.
  3. Position using Five strongpoint tug of war to control spacing
  4. Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort

Boss Combat

Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.

  • Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
  • Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
  • Build preparation: Swap gear and weapons for specific fights when needed

Common Combat Mistakes

  1. Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
  2. Ignoring Garrisons and outposts as spawns: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
  3. Wrong weapons for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
  4. Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
  5. Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Foy but will get you killed in Kursk.
