Mortal Kombat 11 launched on 23 April 2019 from NetherRealm Studios and grew to a 37-fighter roster through the Aftermath expansion and two Kombat Packs, packaged together as MK11 Ultimate from 17 November 2020. Its defining systems are Fatal Blows, Krushing Blows and Kustom Variations, wrapped around a third-person Krypt set on Shang Tsung's island. NetherRealm has long since moved on to Mortal Kombat 1, so MK11 is a finished game rather than a live one: it and its DLC were still on sale in early 2026 and it holds Steam Deck Verified status, but no balance patch is coming.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

A-Tier: Zoner
Zoner is a top-performing option in Mortal Kombat 11.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Scorpion's Spear | The series' most recognisable move, a thrown spear that pulls the opponent in for a free combo. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Fatal Blow | A single high-damage cinematic attack that becomes available once your health drops below 30 percent, usable once per match. |
How to Play Zoner
Zoner focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Scorpion's Spear does the damage and Fatal Blow keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Rushdown
Rushdown is a strong option in Mortal Kombat 11.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Sub-Zero's Ice Klone | A stationary ice construct that freezes anyone who touches it. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Krushing Blow | A cinematic critical version of a specific normal or special move, triggered by meeting that move's condition, such as hitting it as a counter or as the second consecutive attempt. |
How to Play Rushdown
Rushdown focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Pair Sub-Zero's Ice Klone with Krushing Blow and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Setplay Specialist
Setplay Specialist is a strong option in Mortal Kombat 11.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Cetrion's Hell's Wrath | A rock that drops from above at a set distance, one half of the two-direction pressure that made Cetrion a top-tier zoner. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Kustom Variations | Every fighter has a pool of special moves and you slot a limited number into a variation, changing what the character can do. |
How to Play Setplay Specialist
Setplay Specialist focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Kustom Variations covers the gap Cetrion's Hell's Wrath leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Grappler
Grappler is a specialized option in Mortal Kombat 11.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Fujin's Wind Push | A gust that pushes the opponent back, resetting spacing on demand. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Separate offensive and defensive meters | MK11 split the meter in two. |
How to Play Grappler
Grappler focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: This one leans on Separate offensive and defensive meters rather than raw numbers, and Fujin's Wind Push is what makes that trade pay off. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge
A-Tier: Neutral and Footsies Player
Neutral and Footsies Player is a specialized option in Mortal Kombat 11.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Jacqui Briggs' Up Rocket | An upward rocket that covers the air space in front of her, one of the reasons Jacqui is difficult to jump in on. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Flawless Block | Blocking within a tight window on the frame the attack lands reduces block stun and opens a punish that a normal block does not. |
How to Play Neutral and Footsies Player
Neutral and Footsies Player focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Jacqui Briggs' Up Rocket and Flawless Block pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Rushdown: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Zoner once you understand core mechanics and have access to Scorpion's Spear
- Keep a Setplay Specialist setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Neutral and Footsies Player for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary weapon first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Spend Krushing Blows in the first round rather than saving them. Every Krushing Blow condition resets between rounds, so a Krushing Blow you held onto and never used is damage you threw away.
- Throw the Fatal Blow when you need the threat, not only when you are certain it lands. A blocked or whiffed Fatal Blow goes on cooldown and returns, so the worst case is that you lose the option for part of the round.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
