Mortal Kombat 11 launched on 23 April 2019 from NetherRealm Studios and grew to a 37-fighter roster through the Aftermath expansion and two Kombat Packs, packaged together as MK11 Ultimate from 17 November 2020. Its defining systems are Fatal Blows, Krushing Blows and Kustom Variations, wrapped around a third-person Krypt set on Shang Tsung's island. NetherRealm has long since moved on to Mortal Kombat 1, so MK11 is a finished game rather than a live one: it and its DLC were still on sale in early 2026 and it holds Steam Deck Verified status, but no balance patch is coming.
Mortal Kombat 11 features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.
Area Progression Order
| Order | Location | Difficulty | Key Rewards | Recommended Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Shang Tsung's Island (the Krypt) | Available from the start, best after finishing the story | Character skins, gear pieces, Brutalities, Fatalities, concept art | Rushdown |
| 2 | Goro's Lair | Mid-Krypt, once you have found the required items | Gated chests, rarer gear, progression items for other Krypt zones | Rushdown |
| 3 | Towers of Time | After the story mode and some gear grinding | Koins, Souls, Hearts, gear, Konsumables, time-limited cosmetics | Zoner |
| 4 | Klassic Towers | Any, difficulty is selectable | Character endings, Koins, straightforward practice against AI | Zoner |
| 5 | Kombat League | After you can consistently punish and Flawless Block | Seasonal skins and gear, ranked placement, preset variation practice | Zoner |
Shang Tsung's Island (the Krypt): Starting Area
MK11's Krypt is a third-person exploration mode set across Shang Tsung's island, spent opening koffins with Koins, Souls and Hearts. It is where skins, gear, brutalities and concept art come from, and it takes many hours to exhaust.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Available from the start, best after finishing the story |
| Key Rewards | Character skins, gear pieces, Brutalities, Fatalities, concept art |
| Recommended Role | Rushdown |
| Key Weapons | Sub-Zero's Ice Klone |
What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of Fatal Blow. This is where you practice without heavy punishment.
- Collect starting resources and your first weapons upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to Goro's Lair.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
Goro's Lair: Early Game
One of the Krypt's larger sub-areas, gated behind items found elsewhere on the island. The Krypt's structure is a loop of finding a tool, then returning to a door you could not open earlier, which is why it plays more like an adventure game than a menu.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Mid-Krypt, once you have found the required items |
| Key Rewards | Gated chests, rarer gear, progression items for other Krypt zones |
| Recommended Role | Rushdown |
| Key Weapons | Sub-Zero's Ice Klone |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering Krushing Blow. It's critical from this point on.
- Farm for Sub-Zero's Ice Klone if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in Towers of Time.
Towers of Time: Mid Game
Rotating single-player towers loaded with modifiers such as projectiles raining from off-screen. Konsumables and Augments exist specifically to counter the modifiers, and the mode was patched repeatedly after launch because the difficulty scaling drew heavy criticism.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | After the story mode and some gear grinding |
| Key Rewards | Koins, Souls, Hearts, gear, Konsumables, time-limited cosmetics |
| Recommended Role | Zoner |
| Key Weapons | Sub-Zero's Ice Klone |
What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- Scorpion's Spear becomes accessible here. Prioritize getting it.
- Master Kustom Variations for the boss encounters.
- Check our boss guide if you get stuck.
Klassic Towers: Late Game
The traditional arcade ladder, ending in a character-specific ending. This is the mode to use for learning a fighter because the difficulty is adjustable and there are no modifiers interfering with what you are practising.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Any, difficulty is selectable |
| Key Rewards | Character endings, Koins, straightforward practice against AI |
| Recommended Role | Zoner |
| Key Weapons | Scorpion's Spear |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- Scorpion's Spear should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- Flawless Block mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into Kombat League.
Kombat League: Endgame
The online ranked ladder, run in seasons with cosmetic rewards. It restricts you to preset tournament variations rather than Kustom Variations. With NetherRealm's attention long since moved to Mortal Kombat 1, check the current in-game season status before planning around it.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | After you can consistently punish and Flawless Block |
| Key Rewards | Seasonal skins and gear, ranked placement, preset variation practice |
| Recommended Role | Zoner |
| Key Weapons | Scorpion's Spear |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with Neutral and Footsies Player for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order: Shang Tsung's Island (the Krypt) → Goro's Lair → Towers of Time → Klassic Towers → Kombat League. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
- Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your weapons: Some areas favor different weapons types.
- Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
