Mortal Kombat 11 launched on 23 April 2019 from NetherRealm Studios and grew to a 37-fighter roster through the Aftermath expansion and two Kombat Packs, packaged together as MK11 Ultimate from 17 November 2020. Its defining systems are Fatal Blows, Krushing Blows and Kustom Variations, wrapped around a third-person Krypt set on Shang Tsung's island. NetherRealm has long since moved on to Mortal Kombat 1, so MK11 is a finished game rather than a live one: it and its DLC were still on sale in early 2026 and it holds Steam Deck Verified status, but no balance patch is coming.
These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.
Essential Tips
1. Spend Krushing Blows in the first round rather than saving them
Spend Krushing Blows in the first round rather than saving them. Every Krushing Blow condition resets between rounds, so a Krushing Blow you held onto and never used is damage you threw away.
2. Throw the Fatal Blow when you need the threat, not only when you are certain it lands
Throw the Fatal Blow when you need the threat, not only when you are certain it lands. A blocked or whiffed Fatal Blow goes on cooldown and returns, so the worst case is that you lose the option for part of the round.
3. Practise Flawless Block in the training room with the frame data display on
Practise Flawless Block in the training room with the frame data display on. It is the single largest gap between casual and competitive MK11 play, and the punish window it creates does not exist on a normal block.
4. Learn the preset tournament variations if you intend to play ranked
Learn the preset tournament variations if you intend to play ranked. Kombat League locks variations, so a game plan built in practice mode with a custom loadout will not transfer.
5. Breakaway costs two defensive bars, which is your entire defensive meter
Breakaway costs two defensive bars, which is your entire defensive meter. Using it on a combo that was going to end anyway leaves you with nothing for the wake-up situation that follows.
6. Do the story mode first, then the Krypt
Do the story mode first, then the Krypt. Story completion feeds you Koins and unlocks and the Krypt's better chests need currency you will not have straight from the main menu.
7. Bring Konsumables into Towers of Time rather than trying to fight the modifiers with skill
Bring Konsumables into Towers of Time rather than trying to fight the modifiers with skill. The mode was designed around them, and the towers that seem unreasonable are the ones assuming you brought counters.
8. MK11 Ultimate is the version to buy: it bundles the base game, Aftermath and both Kombat Packs, covering all 37 characters including Shang Tsung, Spawn, the Joker, the Terminator, RoboCop, Mileena, Rain and Rambo

9. Aftermath is a story expansion as well as a character pack
Aftermath is a story expansion as well as a character pack. It brought back Friendships and Stage Fatalities alongside Fujin, Sheeva and RoboCop, so a base-game save is missing more than three fighters.
10. Check the in-game server status before committing to an online session
Check the in-game server status before committing to an online session. Reports from early 2026 confirm the game and its DLC are still sold and that it runs on Steam Deck, but NetherRealm's development attention moved to Mortal Kombat 1 years ago and online population is well below launch.
Advanced Strategies
Role Optimization
The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.
For Zoner (A-Tier):
- Focus on Fatal Blow combinations for maximum output.
- Core gear: Scorpion's Spear
- Stat priority: Offensive stats first
For Rushdown (A-Tier):
- Versatile approach that handles any situation.
- Core gear: Sub-Zero's Ice Klone
- Stat priority: Balanced stats
Mechanic Interactions
Understanding how Mortal Kombat 11's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.
Fatal Blow + Krushing Blow: A single high-damage cinematic attack that becomes available once your health drops below 30 percent, usable once per match. Combined with Krushing Blow, a cinematic critical version of a specific normal or special move, triggered by meeting that move's condition, such as hitting it as a counter or as the second consecutive attempt.
Kustom Variations + Separate offensive and defensive meters: Every fighter has a pool of special moves and you slot a limited number into a variation, changing what the character can do. When paired with Separate offensive and defensive meters, mk11 split the meter in two.
Flawless Block scaling: Blocking within a tight window on the frame the attack lands reduces block stun and opens a punish that a normal block does not. It is the highest-value defensive skill in the game and the one almost nobody below tournament level practises.
Weapons Efficiency
| Weapon | Best Use Case | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Scorpion's Spear | Punishing whiffed attacks and projectiles from mid-screen. | The series' most recognisable move, a thrown spear that pulls the opponent in for a free combo. |
| Sub-Zero's Ice Klone | Controlling approach angles and forcing the opponent to take a bad route. | A stationary ice construct that freezes anyone who touches it. |
| Cetrion's Hell's Wrath | Covering the space above and in front of an approaching opponent at once. | A rock that drops from above at a set distance, one half of the two-direction pressure that made Cetrion a top-tier zoner. |
| Fujin's Wind Push | Escaping close-range pressure and re-establishing your preferred range. | A gust that pushes the opponent back, resetting spacing on demand. |
| Jacqui Briggs' Up Rocket | Anti-airing predictable jump-ins and converting them into full combos. | An upward rocket that covers the air space in front of her, one of the reasons Jacqui is difficult to jump in on. |
Location Efficiency
Shang Tsung's Island (the Krypt) (Available from the start, best after finishing the story): MK11's Krypt is a third-person exploration mode set across Shang Tsung's island, spent opening koffins with Koins, Souls and Hearts. It is where skins, gear, brutalities and concept art come from, and it takes many hours to exhaust.
Goro's Lair (Mid-Krypt, once you have found the required items): One of the Krypt's larger sub-areas, gated behind items found elsewhere on the island. The Krypt's structure is a loop of finding a tool, then returning to a door you could not open earlier, which is why it plays more like an adventure game than a menu.
Towers of Time (After the story mode and some gear grinding): Rotating single-player towers loaded with modifiers such as projectiles raining from off-screen. Konsumables and Augments exist specifically to counter the modifiers, and the mode was patched repeatedly after launch because the difficulty scaling drew heavy criticism.
Klassic Towers (Any, difficulty is selectable): The traditional arcade ladder, ending in a character-specific ending. This is the mode to use for learning a fighter because the difficulty is adjustable and there are no modifiers interfering with what you are practising.
Kombat League (After you can consistently punish and Flawless Block): The online ranked ladder, run in seasons with cosmetic rewards. It restricts you to preset tournament variations rather than Kustom Variations. With NetherRealm's attention long since moved to Mortal Kombat 1, check the current in-game season status before planning around it.
Mistakes Even Veterans Make
- Mashing during combos and burning both defensive bars on Breakaway, leaving nothing for the wake-up.
- Saving the Fatal Blow for a perfect opening that never arrives, then losing the round with it unused.
- Building a game plan around a Kustom Variation that Kombat League will not let you take online.
- Attacking into Sub-Zero's Ice Klone or Cetrion's rock drop instead of waiting for the setup to expire.
- Buying the base game rather than MK11 Ultimate and then paying more to add Aftermath and the Kombat Packs separately.
Pro Quick Tips
- Spend Krushing Blows in the first round rather than saving them. Every Krushing Blow condition resets between rounds, so a Krushing Blow you held onto and never used is damage you threw away.
- Throw the Fatal Blow when you need the threat, not only when you are certain it lands. A blocked or whiffed Fatal Blow goes on cooldown and returns, so the worst case is that you lose the option for part of the round.
- Practise Flawless Block in the training room with the frame data display on. It is the single largest gap between casual and competitive MK11 play, and the punish window it creates does not exist on a normal block.
- Start with Rushdown, switch to Zoner when ready
- Invest in Scorpion's Spear above everything else
- Clear areas in order: Shang Tsung's Island (the Krypt) → Goro's Lair → Towers of Time → Klassic Towers → Kombat League. See our maps guide
- Fatal Blow + Krushing Blow together are stronger than either alone
