Mortal Kombat 11 launched on 23 April 2019 from NetherRealm Studios and grew to a 37-fighter roster through the Aftermath expansion and two Kombat Packs, packaged together as MK11 Ultimate from 17 November 2020. Its defining systems are Fatal Blows, Krushing Blows and Kustom Variations, wrapped around a third-person Krypt set on Shang Tsung's island. NetherRealm has long since moved on to Mortal Kombat 1, so MK11 is a finished game rather than a live one: it and its DLC were still on sale in early 2026 and it holds Steam Deck Verified status, but no balance patch is coming.

Core Combat Mechanics
1. Fatal Blow
A single high-damage cinematic attack that becomes available once your health drops below 30 percent, usable once per match. If it whiffs or gets blocked it goes on a cooldown and comes back, which makes throwing it out early far less punishing than it looks.
Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.
2. Krushing Blow
A cinematic critical version of a specific normal or special move, triggered by meeting that move's condition, such as hitting it as a counter or as the second consecutive attempt. Each condition fires once per match, so the whole system is about choosing which round to spend it in.
Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.
3. Kustom Variations
Every fighter has a pool of special moves and you slot a limited number into a variation, changing what the character can do. Ranked and tournament play restricts you to preset variations, while casual and single-player modes allow full customisation.
Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.
4. Separate offensive and defensive meters
MK11 split the meter in two. Offensive bars amplify special moves, defensive bars pay for Breakaway and wake-up options, and both refill on their own over time rather than being built by attacking. That change alone is why MK11 plays slower than the games either side of it.
Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.
5. Flawless Block
Blocking within a tight window on the frame the attack lands reduces block stun and opens a punish that a normal block does not. It is the highest-value defensive skill in the game and the one almost nobody below tournament level practises.
Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.
How These Mechanics Combine
Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:

The better your Flawless Block optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques
Damage Optimization
- Match your weapons to your role's stat priorities
- Exploit Fatal Blow for maximum damage windows
- Chain Krushing Blow and Kustom Variations for combo damage
- Use Separate offensive and defensive meters to create openings
Survivability
- Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
- Spend Krushing Blows in the first round rather than saving them. Every Krushing Blow condition resets between rounds, so a Krushing Blow you held onto and never used is damage you threw away.
- Position using Fatal Blow to control spacing
- Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort

- Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
- Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
- Build preparation: Swap gear and weapons for specific fights when needed
Common Combat Mistakes
- Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
- Ignoring Krushing Blow: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.

- Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
- Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Shang Tsung's Island (the Krypt) but will get you killed in Kombat League.
