NBA 2K23 shipped on 9 September 2022, came off sale on 30 November 2024, and lost its online servers on 31 December 2024. MyCAREER and MyTEAM went dark with those servers; 2K's sunset notice lists Play Now, MyNBA, and The W as what still runs for owners who already have it installed. The PC build is the current-gen version, so its neighborhood was the G.O.A.T. Boat rather than the PlayStation 5 City, and this page treats every online mode as dead rather than pretending otherwise.
This guide covers everything you need: core mechanics, the best builds, equipment worth investing in, location progression, and the tips that actually make a difference.
Core Mechanics
Adrenaline Boosts
Three bars sit under the stamina bar and reset each possession, and an explosive sprint launch or hard dribble move burns one. Spend all three and your speed and acceleration drop hard for the rest of that possession, which was 2K's fix for endless dribbling.
Signature jump shot attributes
Every signature jump shot animation carries four ratings: Shot Speed, Release Height, Defensive Immunity, and Timing Impact. Picking an animation is therefore a stat decision, not a cosmetic one, and 2K23 shipped five shot meters with more unlocked through Seasons.
Badge points and badge levels
On PC and the other current-gen platforms, badges run Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Hall of Fame, bought with badge points and gated behind attribute thresholds you set in the builder. The three-tier equip restriction that got most of the coverage was a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S feature only.
Jordan Challenge scenarios
Fifteen scenarios recreate Michael Jordan games from the 1982 national championship to the 1998 finals, each with era-appropriate presentation and its own stat targets. Highlights include the 63-point game against Boston in 1986 and the 69-point game in 1990.
Offline-only mode list after the 2024 sunset
Since 31 December 2024, only offline play works. 2K's notice names Play Now, MyNBA, and The W or MyWNBA as still playable; it does not name the Jordan Challenge, so treat its availability as something to verify on your own install before planning around it.

Equipment Guide
| Equipment | Why It Matters | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Signature jump shot | Each animation carries Shot Speed, Release Height, Defensive Immunity, and Timing Impact ratings. | Players who want one animation they can green under pressure |
| Pro Stick shot aiming | Aiming the shot with the stick instead of timing it rewards players who can read defender position, and it interacts with the Defensive Immunity rating on your chosen animation. | Contested shooting once you know your jump shot by feel |
| Adrenaline sprint launch | The explosive launch that eats one of your three per-possession boosts. | First-step blow-bys against slower defenders |
| Post fade | A reliable answer against the 2K23 AI, which crowds the paint. | Big men in MyNBA and Play Now |
| Pull-up mid-range | The shot the Jordan Challenge scenarios are built around, and the one most players skip in favor of threes. | Jordan Challenge stat targets and half-court offense |
Signature jump shot: Each animation carries Shot Speed, Release Height, Defensive Immunity, and Timing Impact ratings. A slower release with high Timing Impact forgives inconsistent input; a fast release with low Timing Impact does not.
Pro Stick shot aiming: Aiming the shot with the stick instead of timing it rewards players who can read defender position, and it interacts with the Defensive Immunity rating on your chosen animation.
Adrenaline sprint launch: The explosive launch that eats one of your three per-possession boosts. Used at the right moment it beats a defender to the rim; used three times in a row it strands you with no speed left.
Post fade: A reliable answer against the 2K23 AI, which crowds the paint. It stays useful in every offline mode because it does not depend on badge levels the way perimeter shooting does.
Pull-up mid-range: The shot the Jordan Challenge scenarios are built around, and the one most players skip in favor of threes. Its Timing Impact matters more here because you are shooting off the dribble.

Location Progression
| Location | Level Range | Key Rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Play Now | Any skill level, offline | Slider profiles, roster experimentation, no online dependency |
| MyNBA | Multi-season, offline | Full franchise control, draft classes, staff and scouting systems |
| The W | Career mode, offline | Badge progression, WNBA roster play, offline career arc |
| Jordan Challenge | 15 scenarios, availability uncertain post-sunset | Scenario completion, cosmetic unlocks that were tied to MyCAREER |
| The G.O.A.T. Boat | Offline since the 2024 server sunset | None. MyCAREER, MyTEAM, and every quest reward here are unreachable |
Play Now: Fully offline exhibition play with custom sliders and rosters. Named by 2K as still playable after the sunset, which makes it the safest mode to plan around.
MyNBA: The franchise mode and the deepest surviving option, still playable offline. Note that MyNBA Eras, the era-based franchise start, was a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S feature and is not in the PC build.
The W: The WNBA career mode, listed by 2K among the modes that remain playable offline. The W Online is gone, so treat this as a single-player career only.
Jordan Challenge: Fifteen recreated Jordan games from 1982 to 1998 with period presentation. On current-gen it was entered through the G.O.A.T. Boat promenade, and 2K's sunset notice does not list it among the surviving modes, so verify it loads on your install before counting on it.
The G.O.A.T. Boat: Dead since 31 December 2024. This was the current-gen neighborhood, a three-deck ship whose Silver Deck promenade held the REC Lounge, the Cages, MyTEAM, the NBA Store, and Jordan Challenge access. It replaced NBA 2K22's Cancha Del Mar and required a server connection.

Tips That Actually Matter
- Before anything else, understand what you own: 2K pulled NBA 2K23 from sale on 30 November 2024 and shut its servers on 31 December 2024, so MyCAREER, MyTEAM, and every online mode are gone permanently.
- If you want a 2K basketball game with a career mode that works, the surviving option here is The W offline. MyCAREER progress, VC, and MyTEAM cards from 2K23 cannot be recovered or transferred.
- The PC version is the current-gen build. Guides written for the PlayStation 5 City, the three-tier badge system, or MyNBA Eras are describing a version you do not have.
- Adrenaline Boosts reset each possession, so a wasted boost is only wasted for that trip down the floor. Save at least one for the drive rather than burning all three on perimeter dribbling.
- Pick your signature jump shot by its four attributes rather than by how it looks. High Timing Impact means bad timing hurts you less, which is the right trade for most offline players.
- In MyNBA, the AI trade logic overvalues scoring averages. Flipping a high-usage scorer for two defenders is usually accepted and usually improves your record.
- The Jordan Challenge scenarios grade you on stat targets, not just wins, so check the objectives before tipoff. The 1986 game asks for a scoring output near Jordan's 63-point night against Boston.
- Custom sliders are the only remaining way to change how the game plays. Lowering three-point sliders and raising fatigue makes Play Now feel closer to real NBA pacing.
- Do not spend money on VC. Virtual currency only mattered in MyCAREER and MyTEAM, both of which stopped working at the end of 2024.
- If you are buying a modern 2K, check the current server status first. 2K has sunset each entry on a rolling schedule roughly two years after release, so a newer game on sale may already be near its own cutoff.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Buying or following a MyCAREER build guide for a mode that no longer loads.
- Assuming PC has The City, MyNBA Eras, or the three-tier badge system from the console versions.
- Burning all three Adrenaline Boosts on dribble moves before reaching the paint.
- Choosing a signature jump shot for its animation instead of its Timing Impact rating.
- Expecting MyTEAM cards or VC purchases to carry into NBA 2K24 or NBA 2K25.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still buy NBA 2K23 on Steam?
No. 2K removed it from sale on 30 November 2024. If it is already in your library you can redownload it, but new purchases are not possible through the store.
Does MyCAREER still work?
No. MyCAREER and MyTEAM stopped working when the servers shut down on 31 December 2024. 2K listed Play Now, MyNBA, and The W or MyWNBA as the modes that remain playable offline.
How is NBA 2K23 different from NBA 2K24 and NBA 2K25?
NBA 2K23 introduced Adrenaline Boosts, the four shooting attributes attached to each signature jump shot, and the 15-game Jordan Challenge. On PC its neighborhood is the G.O.A.T. Boat, and it lacks MyNBA Eras, which was a next-gen console feature.
How many Jordan Challenges are there?
Fifteen, running from the 1982 UNC national championship game to the 1998 finals. They include the 63-point game against Boston, the 69-point game in 1990, and the closing Last Dance scenario.
Is it worth installing now?
Only for offline franchise play. MyNBA with custom sliders and the 2022-23 rosters still functions, and The W gives you a career arc, but everything social, competitive, or seasonal is permanently offline.
