NBA 2K23 shipped on 9 September 2022, came off sale on 30 November 2024, and lost its online servers on 31 December 2024. MyCAREER and MyTEAM went dark with those servers; 2K's sunset notice lists Play Now, MyNBA, and The W as what still runs for owners who already have it installed. The PC build is the current-gen version, so its neighborhood was the G.O.A.T. Boat rather than the PlayStation 5 City, and this page treats every online mode as dead rather than pretending otherwise.
Combat in NBA 2K23 rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.
Core Combat Mechanics
1. Adrenaline Boosts
Three bars sit under the stamina bar and reset each possession, and an explosive sprint launch or hard dribble move burns one. Spend all three and your speed and acceleration drop hard for the rest of that possession, which was 2K's fix for endless dribbling.
Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.
2. Signature jump shot attributes
Every signature jump shot animation carries four ratings: Shot Speed, Release Height, Defensive Immunity, and Timing Impact. Picking an animation is therefore a stat decision, not a cosmetic one, and 2K23 shipped five shot meters with more unlocked through Seasons.
Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.
3. Badge points and badge levels
On PC and the other current-gen platforms, badges run Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Hall of Fame, bought with badge points and gated behind attribute thresholds you set in the builder. The three-tier equip restriction that got most of the coverage was a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S feature only.
Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.
4. Jordan Challenge scenarios
Fifteen scenarios recreate Michael Jordan games from the 1982 national championship to the 1998 finals, each with era-appropriate presentation and its own stat targets. Highlights include the 63-point game against Boston in 1986 and the 69-point game in 1990.
Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.
5. Offline-only mode list after the 2024 sunset
Since 31 December 2024, only offline play works. 2K's notice names Play Now, MyNBA, and The W or MyWNBA as still playable; it does not name the Jordan Challenge, so treat its availability as something to verify on your own install before planning around it.
Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.
How These Mechanics Combine
Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:
Adrenaline Boosts + Signature jump shot attributes
Three bars sit under the stamina bar and reset each possession, and an explosive sprint launch or hard dribble move burns one. When combined with Signature jump shot attributes, every signature jump shot animation carries four ratings: shot speed, release height, defensive immunity, and timing impact. This combination is the core of every effective build.
Badge points and badge levels + Jordan Challenge scenarios
On PC and the other current-gen platforms, badges run Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Hall of Fame, bought with badge points and gated behind attribute thresholds you set in the builder. Paired with Jordan Challenge scenarios, fifteen scenarios recreate michael jordan games from the 1982 national championship to the 1998 finals, each with era-appropriate presentation and its own stat targets. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.
Offline-only mode list after the 2024 sunset as a Multiplier
Since 31 December 2024, only offline play works. 2K's notice names Play Now, MyNBA, and The W or MyWNBA as still playable; it does not name the Jordan Challenge, so treat its availability as something to verify on your own install before planning around it. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Offline-only mode list after the 2024 sunset optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques
Damage Optimization
- Match your equipment to your role's stat priorities
- Exploit Adrenaline Boosts for maximum damage windows
- Chain Signature jump shot attributes and Badge points and badge levels for combo damage
- Use Jordan Challenge scenarios to create openings
Survivability
- Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
- Before anything else, understand what you own: 2K pulled NBA 2K23 from sale on 30 November 2024 and shut its servers on 31 December 2024, so MyCAREER, MyTEAM, and every online mode are gone permanently.
- Position using Adrenaline Boosts to control spacing
- Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort
Boss Combat
Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.
- Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
- Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
- Build preparation: Swap gear and equipment for specific fights when needed
Common Combat Mistakes
- Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
- Ignoring Signature jump shot attributes: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
- Wrong equipment for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
- Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
- Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Play Now but will get you killed in The G.O.A.T. Boat.
