Visual Concepts put NBA 2K24 on Steam on 7 September 2023 with Kobe Bryant on the standard cover and ProPLAY, which converts real NBA broadcast footage into animations, in its first year. The PC release is the previous generation build, so it runs The Neighborhood rather than The City, and NBA 2K25 was the first PC entry to match the current generation console version. 2K shut the multiplayer servers down on 31 December 2025, which took MyCAREER, MyTEAM and every online mode with them.

This guide covers everything you need: core mechanics, the best builds, equipment worth investing in, location progression, and the tips that actually make a difference.

Core Mechanics

ProPLAY animation conversion

ProPLAY converts real NBA broadcast footage into playable animations instead of relying only on studio motion capture. NBA 2K24 was the first year of the system, and it shows up mostly in signature jumpshots, dribble packages and layup finishes.

Badge tiers and badge points

Badges sit in Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 groups and cost badge points to equip. A Bronze Tier 1 badge costs 1 point while a Hall of Fame Tier 3 badge costs 8, so the same point pool buys one elite badge or a handful of cheap ones.

Usage driven badge levelling

A badge unlocks at Bronze automatically once your attributes cross its requirement, then climbs by actually being triggered in games and in the practice facility. Badges you never use drift back down, and nothing falls below Bronze.

Mamba Moments challenges

Mamba Moments replaced the Jordan Challenge and asks you to recreate specific Kobe Bryant performances under set conditions. 2K's shutdown notice named Play Now, MyNBA, The W and MyWNBA as the modes that keep working and did not list Mamba Moments, so treat its status as unconfirmed.

Server dependent progression

Everything that scored a MyPLAYER ran through 2K's servers, from Virtual Currency to badge progress. Those servers closed on 31 December 2025, so MyCAREER, MyTEAM, The Neighborhood and all online play stopped working on 1 January 2026.

Builds Overview

RoleTierPlaystyleKey Stats
Paint BeastSSeal in the paint, take everything at the rim, and accept a mid range and three point rating in the 25 to 40 range so the physical attributes stay maxed.Standing dunk and close shot, then block and defensive rebound, then strength
Two-Way Slashing PlaymakerSAttack downhill off screens, kick out when the help rotates, and pick up the opposing lead guard on defence so the build earns badge progression at both ends.Ball handle and speed with ball, then driving dunk, then perimeter defence and steal
3 and D WingAHold the corner until the ball swings, shoot without dribbling first so Claymore stays active, and spend the rest of the possession denying your matchup a catch.Three point shot to 92 or higher for Hall of Fame Claymore, then perimeter defence, then agility
Stretch BigBSet the screen, pop rather than roll, and shoot the moment the big steps out to help. Do not chase blocks you cannot reach, because the build has no recovery speed.Three point shot, then mid range, then defensive rebound and strength
Facilitating Point GuardAPush in transition, hit the lane runner before the defence sets, and take open threes only. In a lobby of strangers this build lives or dies on who else is on the floor.Pass accuracy and ball handle, then speed with ball, then three point shot

Paint Beast (S-Tier): The interior big built to rebound, block and finish inside without pretending to shoot. Community build sheets settled on roughly 6 foot 11 at about 248 pounds with a 7 foot 7 wingspan as the frame that keeps both blocking and finishing high.

Two-Way Slashing Playmaker (S-Tier): A guard or wing that drives, passes and defends without a reliable jumper. It survives contact because ball handling and driving dunk carry it, and the defensive half keeps it useful when shots are not falling.

3 and D Wing (A-Tier): The simplest build to play well: stand in the corner, shoot when open, and guard the other team's best wing. Three point shot and perimeter defence carry the whole thing, which keeps the attribute spend narrow.

Stretch Big (B-Tier): A power forward or centre who pulls the opposing big away from the rim. It opens driving lanes for teammates but gives up interior defence, so it only works alongside a genuine rim protector.

Facilitating Point Guard (A-Tier): A pass first guard built around ball handle, pass accuracy and speed with ball. It is the least selfish build in the game and the most dependent on teammates who actually cut and shoot.

Equipment Guide

EquipmentWhy It MattersBest For
ClaymoreRaises your chance of knocking down a perimeter shot after you have stood still rather than dribbling into it.Spot up shooters and any build that plays off the ball in the corner.
Float GameOne of the badges added in NBA 2K24, covering floaters and runners from the middle of the lane.Undersized guards who get met at the rim by help defenders.
Blow-ByImproves your chance of beating a defender off the dribble on the first step.Slashers and playmakers who create off the bounce rather than off screens.
Immovable EnforcerAnother NBA 2K24 addition, aimed at holding ground under contact when you set screens or defend a bigger body.Interior bigs, screen setters and anyone guarding the post.
94 FeetA defensive badge for full court ball pressure, cutting the cost of hounding the ball handler from the inbound pass onward.Point of attack defenders who want to force turnovers before the offence sets up.

Claymore: Raises your chance of knocking down a perimeter shot after you have stood still rather than dribbling into it. Pushing it to Hall of Fame calls for a Three-Point Shot rating of 92.

Float Game: One of the badges added in NBA 2K24, covering floaters and runners from the middle of the lane. It gives smaller guards a shot that clears a big without going all the way to the rim.

Blow-By: Improves your chance of beating a defender off the dribble on the first step. It is the badge that makes a slashing build feel different from a scoring build with the same driving dunk rating.

Immovable Enforcer: Another NBA 2K24 addition, aimed at holding ground under contact when you set screens or defend a bigger body. It rewards builds with real strength ratings rather than pure verticals.

94 Feet: A defensive badge for full court ball pressure, cutting the cost of hounding the ball handler from the inbound pass onward. Useless if your stamina and perimeter defence are low.

The Neighborhood: The previous generation MyCAREER hub that the PC version shipped with instead of The City. It held pickup courts, the practice facility and the shops, and it required a server connection to enter.

MyTEAM: The card collecting mode, which NBA 2K24 pushed hardest and which drew the sharpest criticism for its market changes. Roster management, auctions and every game type inside it ran through 2K's servers.

Play Now: Straight exhibition basketball with real NBA rosters and no progression attached. 2K named it as one of the modes that keeps working after the shutdown, which makes it the main reason to still install the game.

MyNBA: The franchise mode, where you run a team across seasons with trades, drafts and staff. It runs offline on PC, but the Eras start points that let you begin in the Magic and Bird or Jordan seasons were a current generation console feature.

Mamba Moments: Kobe Bryant career recreations that replaced the Jordan Challenge, listed on the PC store page as one of the headline modes. 2K's shutdown notice did not name it among the surviving offline modes, so verify it before buying for that alone.

Tips That Actually Matter

  1. Verify what you are buying before you spend anything. NBA 2K24 was pulled from sale on 30 October 2025 and its servers closed on 31 December 2025, so any key you find on a reseller gives you Play Now and MyNBA rather than the modes the marketing was built around.
  2. The PC build is the previous generation version, which is why it has The Neighborhood and not The City. If you specifically want The City, MyNBA Eras or The W on PC, NBA 2K25 was the first release to bring the current generation build to Steam.
  3. Budget 150 GB of drive space. That is what the Steam page asks for, and it is a lot to give up for a sports title whose online half no longer connects.
  4. Badges level from actions you actually perform, not from time spent in the mode. A build with Hall of Fame potential on Claymore stays Bronze until you take enough stationary catch and shoot attempts to prove it.
  5. Badge points are a budget, not a checklist. One Hall of Fame Tier 3 badge costs 8 points against 1 for a Bronze Tier 1, so decide whether your build wants one skill that is elite or four that are merely competent.
  6. Attribute thresholds gate the badges, so pick the badge first and the attribute second. Hall of Fame Claymore wants a Three-Point Shot rating of 92, which decides your entire attribute spend on a shooting build.
  7. MyNBA on PC is the most durable thing in the box now. It runs offline, it keeps working with edited rosters, and it is the only mode where the build knowledge above still changes anything, through player editing rather than MyPLAYER.
  8. PC never had crossplay in NBA 2K24. That was limited to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, so PC lobbies were always their own smaller pool even before the shutdown.
  9. The PC scene keeps these games alive through mods rather than patches. NLSC at nba-live.com has hosted roster updates, court files and portrait packs for NBA 2K releases for years, and an offline copy is exactly the situation those files were made for.
  10. Steam reviews sit at 44 percent positive across roughly 14,900 English ratings, and the Metacritic score was 68 on current generation consoles. Neither number moved much after launch, so the negative reception was about monetisation rather than a broken build that got patched.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Buying NBA 2K24 in 2026 expecting MyCAREER or MyTEAM to work. Both need 2K servers that closed on 31 December 2025.
  • Assuming the PC version matches PlayStation 5 footage you have seen. PC shipped the previous generation build with The Neighborhood, so The City, MyNBA Eras and The W were never on it.
  • Spreading badge points evenly across every category, which produces a build with nothing above Silver and no reason to trust it in a close game.
  • Building a Stretch Big without a rim protector alongside you. Pulling your own centre away from the basket hands the opponent the paint.
  • Grinding Virtual Currency purchases late in the game's life. VC stopped being earnable at the shutdown, and anything bought after October 2025 was money spent on a countdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you still play NBA 2K24 in 2026?

Only the offline half. 2K listed Play Now, MyNBA, The W and MyWNBA as still functional after the 31 December 2025 shutdown, while MyCAREER, MyTEAM, The Neighborhood and all multiplayer stopped working on 1 January 2026.

Is the PC version the same as PlayStation 5?

No. NBA 2K24 on PC is the previous generation build, so it uses The Neighborhood instead of The City and lacks MyNBA Eras and The W. NBA 2K25 was the first PC release built on the current generation version.

What is ProPLAY?

A system introduced in NBA 2K24 that converts real NBA broadcast footage into in game animations rather than depending purely on motion capture sessions. It affects jumpshots, dribble moves, layups and passing animations.

How do badges work in NBA 2K24?

Attributes unlock badges at Bronze automatically, then usage in games and practice raises them toward Silver, Gold and Hall of Fame. Equipping badges spends badge points, from 1 for a Bronze Tier 1 badge up to 8 for a Hall of Fame Tier 3 badge.

Should I buy NBA 2K24 or a newer entry?

A newer entry, unless you specifically want an offline franchise or exhibition game and find NBA 2K24 very cheap. NBA 2K25 brought the current generation build to PC with The City, MyNBA Eras and The W, none of which the 2K24 PC version ever had.
