Ndemic Creations brought Plague Inc: Evolved out of Early Access on 18 February 2016, rebuilding the 2012 mobile game with a larger world map, custom scenarios and Steam Workshop support. You seed one of seven standard plague types in a single country and spend DNA points across Transmission, Symptoms and Abilities until every country on Earth is infected. The cure runs on its own clock funded by wealthy nations, so the entire game is a race between an infection curve you control and a research bar you can only slow.
Starting Plague Inc: Evolved can feel overwhelming. This guide tells you exactly what to focus on during your first hours so you don't waste time on things that don't matter yet. For the full progression path, see our walkthrough.
What Kind of Game Is This?
Plague Inc: Evolved is a strategy game built around DNA points and bubble popping and Transmission, Symptoms and Abilities trees. The core loop involves mastering these systems to progress through increasingly challenging content.
What to expect: Time investment in learning mechanics, experimentation, and gradual mastery. The game rewards patience and knowledge.
Choosing Your First Build
| Build | Beginner Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bacteria | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Virus | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Prion | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Nano-Virus | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Bio-Weapon | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
Our recommendation: Start with Virus. It offers the most forgiving experience while teaching core mechanics.
Avoid Bio-Weapon as your first pick. It requires deep knowledge of game systems to use effectively. Once you're ready, check our classes guide for all options.
First Session Step-by-Step
Step 1: Learn DNA points and bubble popping
Red bubbles on infected countries and orange bubbles on newly infected ones are the main income, and blue cure bubbles slow the research bar. Genes change the yield: ATP Boost hands over 8 extra DNA at the start, Metabolic Jump raises the red bubble payout, Cytochrome Surge raises the orange, and Catalytic Switch pulls 2 to 5 DNA out of blue bubbles that would otherwise only slow the cure.
This is the foundation. Spend your first 15-30 minutes getting comfortable with how DNA points and bubble popping works before worrying about anything else. Our combat guide breaks this down further.
Step 2: Head to Saudi Arabia
The standard opener because it carries heavy air and sea traffic while being hot and arid enough to slow early detection. It also borders several land routes, which means a single well placed plague touches three continents quickly.
Clear the main content here before moving on. Everything teaches fundamentals you'll need later. See our maps guide for all locations.
Step 3: Get Your First Upgrade
Look for Water 2: it's the most accessible early upgrade. The naval counterpart to Air 2, and the reason island nations get infected before they close their ports. Greenland, Iceland, New Zealand, Madagascar and the Caribbean all shut down once the world panics, so Water 2 needs to land before that.
Step 4: Understand Transmission, Symptoms and Abilities trees
Transmission covers Air 1 and 2, Water 1 and 2, and the animal vectors, and it is where almost all early DNA belongs. Abilities cover Cold Resistance, Heat Resistance, Drug Resistance and Genetic Hardening, which decide whether Greenland and Saudi Arabia are reachable at all. Symptoms are the lethality tree and the one that gets you noticed, which is why they come last.
This is the system most new players overlook. Invest time here early. It pays off throughout the entire game.
Step 5: Push to India
Hot, humid, poor and enormous, which makes it a fast infection base with weak healthcare working in your favour. The trade is that wealthy nations stay clean longer, so the cure clock starts later but the islands are further away.
Essential Mechanics Explained
DNA points and bubble popping
Red bubbles on infected countries and orange bubbles on newly infected ones are the main income, and blue cure bubbles slow the research bar. Genes change the yield: ATP Boost hands over 8 extra DNA at the start, Metabolic Jump raises the red bubble payout, Cytochrome Surge raises the orange, and Catalytic Switch pulls 2 to 5 DNA out of blue bubbles that would otherwise only slow the cure.
Transmission, Symptoms and Abilities trees
Transmission covers Air 1 and 2, Water 1 and 2, and the animal vectors, and it is where almost all early DNA belongs. Abilities cover Cold Resistance, Heat Resistance, Drug Resistance and Genetic Hardening, which decide whether Greenland and Saudi Arabia are reachable at all. Symptoms are the lethality tree and the one that gets you noticed, which is why they come last.
Mutation and devolving
Symptoms mutate on their own, and every mutation raises severity, which raises awareness, which speeds the cure. Devolving an unwanted symptom costs DNA on an escalating scale, so a run that ignores stray mutations for ten minutes cannot afford to clean them up afterwards. Darwinist raises the mutation rate and Creationist lowers it.
Cure research and country funding
Rich countries pour money into the cure, so infecting them early is a trade rather than a straight win. Genetic Hardening 1 and 2 and the Genetic ReShuffle line push the requirement upward, and Prion's Neural Atrophy slows research outright by damaging the brains of the scientists working on it.
Genes chosen before the run
The gene loadout is set before the first click and cannot be changed mid game. Travel genes Aerocyte, Aquacyte and Teracyte boost air, sea and land spread, Native Biome raises infectivity in your starting country, the environment genes Xerophile, Hydrophile, Rurophile and Urbophile favour specific terrain, and Sympto-Stasis cuts the cost of the full 32 symptom tree from 779 DNA to 283.
Common Beginner Mistakes
1. Evolving a symptom early because DNA is sitting unspent
Symptoms raise severity, severity raises awareness, and awareness funds the cure, so unspent DNA is safer than a premature cough.
2. Forgetting island nations until the cure is already at 40 percent
Greenland, Iceland, New Zealand, Madagascar and the Caribbean close ports on panic, and there is no way back in afterwards.
3. Skipping Cold Resistance on a hot country start
Saudi Arabia and India both spread beautifully until the plague hits Canada and Russia and simply stops.
4. Treating Bio-Weapon like Bacteria
Its automatic lethality gain means the standard infect first plan fails unless Nucleic Acid Neutralisation is bought early.
5. Ignoring blue cure bubbles because they give no DNA by default
Popping them still slows research, and with Catalytic Switch equipped they pay 2 to 5 DNA on top.
First 5 Hours Checklist
- Understand DNA points and bubble popping and Transmission, Symptoms and Abilities trees
- Choose Virus as starting build
- Clear Saudi Arabia main content
- Acquire Water 2 or equivalent upgrade
- Reach India
- The sequence that beats every difficulty is the same one: buy transmission and resistances until every country is infected, devolve stray symptoms as they appear, then evolve the entire lethality package in one burst. Losses on Brutal and above almost always trace back to evolving a cough too early.
- Greenland, Iceland, New Zealand, Madagascar and the Caribbean close their ports the moment the world panics. Check those five on the map before touching the symptom tree, because a run that ends with one grey island was lost forty minutes earlier.
Tips for New Players
- The sequence that beats every difficulty is the same one: buy transmission and resistances until every country is infected, devolve stray symptoms as they appear, then evolve the entire lethality package in one burst. Losses on Brutal and above almost always trace back to evolving a cough too early.
- Greenland, Iceland, New Zealand, Madagascar and the Caribbean close their ports the moment the world panics. Check those five on the map before touching the symptom tree, because a run that ends with one grey island was lost forty minutes earlier.
- Devolving is priced on an escalating scale, so the cost of cleaning up a mutation rises the longer you leave it. Devolve on sight rather than batching them, particularly with Virus where mutations arrive constantly.
- ATP Boost hands over 8 extra DNA at the very start, which on Mega Brutal is roughly the difference between Air 1 on turn one and Air 1 several countries later. Catalytic Switch then converts blue cure bubbles into 2 to 5 DNA each.
- Sympto-Stasis reduces the cost of evolving all 32 symptoms from 779 DNA to 283. That single gene is what makes a complete symptom sweep affordable in the endgame burst.
- Skin Lesions at plus 11 infectivity, Necrosis at plus 10 and Dysentery at plus 8 are the infectivity symptoms, while Total Organ Failure at 25 lethality, Hemorrhagic Shock at 15 and Necrosis at 13 are the killers. Knowing which column a symptom sits in is what makes the final burst efficient.
- The initial six symptoms available at the start are Nausea, Coughing, Rash, Insomnia, Cysts and Anaemia. None of them belong in an early build, they exist so mutations have somewhere to land.
- Nano-Virus starts detected, so the cure begins immediately and the kill switch must be suppressed before anything else. Finishing both of its ability trees unlocks Kill Switch Stasis, which is the point where the run becomes normal.
- Bio-Weapon gains lethality automatically, which kills hosts before they spread. Nucleic Acid Neutralisation exists specifically to hold that back, and Unlock Annihilate Gene only becomes available once all three of its trees are complete.
- Prion's Neural Atrophy slows research and raises the cure requirement, which is why Prion tolerates a slower spread than any other type. It is the most forgiving plague for a player still learning the map.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which plague type should a new player start with?
Bacteria. It has no crippling drawback, its Bacterial Resilience line covers hostile climates, and the infect first then kill sequence it teaches transfers to every other type in the game.
What is the best starting country?
Saudi Arabia is the standard answer because it combines major air and sea traffic with a hot arid climate that slows detection. India and China are the high population alternatives, and South Africa helps when islands are the problem.
Why do I keep losing with Madagascar uninfected?
Islands close their ports as soon as global panic rises, and panic rises with symptom severity. Buy Water 1 and 2 and reach the islands before you evolve anything visible.
Which genes matter most on Mega Brutal?
ATP Boost for the 8 extra starting DNA, a travel gene matching your start such as Aerocyte, Sympto-Stasis to cut the symptom tree from 779 DNA to 283, and Genetic Mimic to slow the cure.
What special plagues are included?
Beyond the seven standard types, Plague Inc: Evolved adds the Neurax Worm, the Necroa Virus with its zombie mechanics, the Simian Flu with its ape genes, and the Shadow Plague with blood, flight and shadow genes.
