Ndemic Creations brought Plague Inc: Evolved out of Early Access on 18 February 2016, rebuilding the 2012 mobile game with a larger world map, custom scenarios and Steam Workshop support. You seed one of seven standard plague types in a single country and spend DNA points across Transmission, Symptoms and Abilities until every country on Earth is infected. The cure runs on its own clock funded by wealthy nations, so the entire game is a race between an infection curve you control and a research bar you can only slow.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.
Quick Progression Summary
| Phase | Area | Focus | Build | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Start | Saudi Arabia | DNA points and bubble popping basics | Virus | 1-2 hours |
| 2. Early | India | Transmission, Symptoms and Abilities trees mastery | Virus | 3-5 hours |
| 3. Mid | China | Mutation and devolving + gear | Bacteria or Virus | 5-10 hours |
| 4. Late | South Africa | Build optimization | Bacteria | 5-10 hours |
| 5. Endgame | Greenland | Min-max | Bacteria or Bio-Weapon | Ongoing |
See our maps guide for detailed area breakdowns.
Phase 1: Getting Started (Saudi Arabia)
The standard opener because it carries heavy air and sea traffic while being hot and arid enough to slow early detection. It also borders several land routes, which means a single well placed plague touches three continents quickly.
Level/Difficulty: All difficulties, recommended default Key Rewards: Fast air spread, land borders and a slow detection curve
What to Do in Saudi Arabia
- Learn DNA points and bubble popping. Red bubbles on infected countries and orange bubbles on newly infected ones are the main income, and blue cure bubbles slow the research bar. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Virus as your starting build. See our builds guide for why.
- The sequence that beats every difficulty is the same one: buy transmission and resistances until every country is infected, devolve stray symptoms as they appear, then evolve the entire lethality package in one burst. Losses on Brutal and above almost always trace back to evolving a cough too early.
- Acquire your first equipment upgrade: Water 2 or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand DNA points and bubble popping fundamentals
- Virus selected and functional
- Saudi Arabia main content cleared
- Ready for India
Phase 2: Early Game (India)
Hot, humid, poor and enormous, which makes it a fast infection base with weak healthcare working in your favour. The trade is that wealthy nations stay clean longer, so the cure clock starts later but the islands are further away.
Level/Difficulty: All difficulties, high population start Key Rewards: Very fast raw infection numbers and cheap DNA income
What to Do in India
- Work on Transmission, Symptoms and Abilities trees. Transmission covers Air 1 and 2, Water 1 and 2, and the animal vectors, and it is where almost all early DNA belongs. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for Water 2 if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Greenland, Iceland, New Zealand, Madagascar and the Caribbean close their ports the moment the world panics. Check those five on the map before touching the symptom tree, because a run that ends with one grey island was lost forty minutes earlier.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to China.
- Consider whether Bacteria might suit your playstyle better than Virus.
Phase 2 Checklist
- Transmission, Symptoms and Abilities trees integrated into gameplay
- Water 2 acquired
- India fully cleared
- Ready for China
Phase 3: Mid Game (China)
A huge population with strong air and sea links, useful when you want both infection volume and reach from a single country. Its climate range means resistances matter earlier than in a purely hot start.
Level/Difficulty: All difficulties, balanced start Key Rewards: Population volume plus international connections
What to Do in China
- Master Mutation and devolving. Symptoms mutate on their own, and every mutation raises severity, which raises awareness, which speeds the cure. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Air 2. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
- Devolving is priced on an escalating scale, so the cost of cleaning up a mutation rises the longer you leave it. Devolve on sight rather than batching them, particularly with Virus where mutations arrive constantly.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in Cure research and country funding for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- Mutation and devolving mastered
- Air 2 acquired or in progress
- China fully cleared
- Ready for South Africa
Phase 4: Late Game (South Africa)
A start with both airports and seaports plus a southern position that reaches the countries most runs leave until last. It is the pragmatic answer when a previous attempt died with Madagascar still grey.
Level/Difficulty: All difficulties, island focused start Key Rewards: Early sea routes toward Madagascar and the southern islands
What to Do in South Africa
- Finalize your build. You should be running Bacteria or Virus with optimized gear.
- Air 2 should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- ATP Boost hands over 8 extra DNA at the very start, which on Mega Brutal is roughly the difference between Air 1 on turn one and Air 1 several countries later. Catalytic Switch then converts blue cure bubbles into 2 to 5 DNA each.
- Genes chosen before the run optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Greenland.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Air 2 upgraded to max
- South Africa fully cleared
- Ready for Greenland
Phase 5: Endgame (Greenland)
A deliberate challenge start rather than an efficient one. Cold, tiny, isolated and quick to close its single port, it demands Cold Resistance and Water transmission before the plague has produced meaningful DNA.
Level/Difficulty: Challenge start, expert only Key Rewards: The hardest legitimate opening in the standard game
What to Do in Greenland
- Greenland tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- Sympto-Stasis reduces the cost of evolving all 32 symptoms from 779 DNA to 283. That single gene is what makes a complete symptom sweep affordable in the endgame burst.
- The endgame loop: run Greenland, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Bio-Weapon for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where Genes chosen before the run mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Greenland fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Evolving a symptom early because DNA is sitting unspent. Symptoms raise severity, severity raises awareness, and awareness funds the cure, so unspent DNA is safer than a premature cough.
- Forgetting island nations until the cure is already at 40 percent. Greenland, Iceland, New Zealand, Madagascar and the Caribbean close ports on panic, and there is no way back in afterwards.
- Skipping Cold Resistance on a hot country start. Saudi Arabia and India both spread beautifully until the plague hits Canada and Russia and simply stops.
- Treating Bio-Weapon like Bacteria. Its automatic lethality gain means the standard infect first plan fails unless Nucleic Acid Neutralisation is bought early.
- Ignoring blue cure bubbles because they give no DNA by default. Popping them still slows research, and with Catalytic Switch equipped they pay 2 to 5 DNA on top.
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
- The sequence that beats every difficulty is the same one: buy transmission and resistances until every country is infected, devolve stray symptoms as they appear, then evolve the entire lethality package in one burst. Losses on Brutal and above almost always trace back to evolving a cough too early.
