Ndemic Creations brought Plague Inc: Evolved out of Early Access on 18 February 2016, rebuilding the 2012 mobile game with a larger world map, custom scenarios and Steam Workshop support. You seed one of seven standard plague types in a single country and spend DNA points across Transmission, Symptoms and Abilities until every country on Earth is infected. The cure runs on its own clock funded by wealthy nations, so the entire game is a race between an infection curve you control and a research bar you can only slow.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

A-Tier: Bacteria
Bacteria is a top-performing option in Plague Inc: Evolved.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Air 2 | The second tier of airborne transmission, and the single most valuable early purchase for a plague starting somewhere with heavy air traffic. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | DNA points and bubble popping | Red bubbles on infected countries and orange bubbles on newly infected ones are the main income, and blue cure bubbles slow the research bar. |
How to Play Bacteria
Bacteria focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Air 2 does the damage and DNA points and bubble popping keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Virus
Virus is a strong option in Plague Inc: Evolved.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Water 2 | The naval counterpart to Air 2, and the reason island nations get infected before they close their ports. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Transmission, Symptoms and Abilities trees | Transmission covers Air 1 and 2, Water 1 and 2, and the animal vectors, and it is where almost all early DNA belongs. |
How to Play Virus
Virus focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Pair Water 2 with Transmission, Symptoms and Abilities trees and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Prion
Prion is a strong option in Plague Inc: Evolved.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Cold Resistance 2 | Cold climates block infection outright without it, which is what strands runs at Greenland, Iceland and northern Russia. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Mutation and devolving | Symptoms mutate on their own, and every mutation raises severity, which raises awareness, which speeds the cure. |
How to Play Prion
Prion focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Mutation and devolving covers the gap Cold Resistance 2 leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Nano-Virus
Nano-Virus is a specialized option in Plague Inc: Evolved.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Genetic Hardening 2 | Raises the amount of research needed to complete the cure, which is the only lever that directly attacks the losing condition. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Cure research and country funding | Rich countries pour money into the cure, so infecting them early is a trade rather than a straight win. |
How to Play Nano-Virus
Nano-Virus focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: This one leans on Cure research and country funding rather than raw numbers, and Genetic Hardening 2 is what makes that trade pay off. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge
A-Tier: Bio-Weapon
Bio-Weapon is a specialized option in Plague Inc: Evolved.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Total Organ Failure | The deadliest single symptom in the game at 25 lethality, well ahead of Hemorrhagic Shock at 15 and Necrosis at 13. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Genes chosen before the run | The gene loadout is set before the first click and cannot be changed mid game. |
How to Play Bio-Weapon
Bio-Weapon focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Total Organ Failure and Genes chosen before the run pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Virus: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Bacteria once you understand core mechanics and have access to Air 2
- Keep a Prion setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Bio-Weapon for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary equipment first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- The sequence that beats every difficulty is the same one: buy transmission and resistances until every country is infected, devolve stray symptoms as they appear, then evolve the entire lethality package in one burst. Losses on Brutal and above almost always trace back to evolving a cough too early.
- Greenland, Iceland, New Zealand, Madagascar and the Caribbean close their ports the moment the world panics. Check those five on the map before touching the symptom tree, because a run that ends with one grey island was lost forty minutes earlier.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
