Ndemic Creations brought Plague Inc: Evolved out of Early Access on 18 February 2016, rebuilding the 2012 mobile game with a larger world map, custom scenarios and Steam Workshop support. You seed one of seven standard plague types in a single country and spend DNA points across Transmission, Symptoms and Abilities until every country on Earth is infected. The cure runs on its own clock funded by wealthy nations, so the entire game is a race between an infection curve you control and a research bar you can only slow.
These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.
Essential Tips
1. The sequence that beats every difficulty is the same one: buy transmission and resistances until every country is infected, devolve stray symptoms as they appear, then evolve the entire lethality package in one burst
The sequence that beats every difficulty is the same one: buy transmission and resistances until every country is infected, devolve stray symptoms as they appear, then evolve the entire lethality package in one burst. Losses on Brutal and above almost always trace back to evolving a cough too early.
2. Greenland, Iceland, New Zealand, Madagascar and the Caribbean close their ports the moment the world panics
Greenland, Iceland, New Zealand, Madagascar and the Caribbean close their ports the moment the world panics. Check those five on the map before touching the symptom tree, because a run that ends with one grey island was lost forty minutes earlier.
3. Devolving is priced on an escalating scale, so the cost of cleaning up a mutation rises the longer you leave it
Devolving is priced on an escalating scale, so the cost of cleaning up a mutation rises the longer you leave it. Devolve on sight rather than batching them, particularly with Virus where mutations arrive constantly.
4. ATP Boost hands over 8 extra DNA at the very start, which on Mega Brutal is roughly the difference between Air 1 on turn one and Air 1 several countries later
ATP Boost hands over 8 extra DNA at the very start, which on Mega Brutal is roughly the difference between Air 1 on turn one and Air 1 several countries later. Catalytic Switch then converts blue cure bubbles into 2 to 5 DNA each.
5. Sympto-Stasis reduces the cost of evolving all 32 symptoms from 779 DNA to 283
Sympto-Stasis reduces the cost of evolving all 32 symptoms from 779 DNA to 283. That single gene is what makes a complete symptom sweep affordable in the endgame burst.
6. Skin Lesions at plus 11 infectivity, Necrosis at plus 10 and Dysentery at plus 8 are the infectivity symptoms, while Total Organ Failure at 25 lethality, Hemorrhagic Shock at 15 and Necrosis at 13 are the killers
Skin Lesions at plus 11 infectivity, Necrosis at plus 10 and Dysentery at plus 8 are the infectivity symptoms, while Total Organ Failure at 25 lethality, Hemorrhagic Shock at 15 and Necrosis at 13 are the killers. Knowing which column a symptom sits in is what makes the final burst efficient.
7. The initial six symptoms available at the start are Nausea, Coughing, Rash, Insomnia, Cysts and Anaemia
The initial six symptoms available at the start are Nausea, Coughing, Rash, Insomnia, Cysts and Anaemia. None of them belong in an early build, they exist so mutations have somewhere to land.
8. Nano-Virus starts detected, so the cure begins immediately and the kill switch must be suppressed before anything else
Nano-Virus starts detected, so the cure begins immediately and the kill switch must be suppressed before anything else. Finishing both of its ability trees unlocks Kill Switch Stasis, which is the point where the run becomes normal.
9. Bio-Weapon gains lethality automatically, which kills hosts before they spread
Bio-Weapon gains lethality automatically, which kills hosts before they spread. Nucleic Acid Neutralisation exists specifically to hold that back, and Unlock Annihilate Gene only becomes available once all three of its trees are complete.
10. Prion's Neural Atrophy slows research and raises the cure requirement, which is why Prion tolerates a slower spread than any other type
Prion's Neural Atrophy slows research and raises the cure requirement, which is why Prion tolerates a slower spread than any other type. It is the most forgiving plague for a player still learning the map.
Advanced Strategies
Build Optimization
The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.
For Bacteria (A-Tier):
- Focus on DNA points and bubble popping combinations for maximum output.
- Core gear: Air 2
- Stat priority: Offensive stats first
For Virus (A-Tier):
- Versatile approach that handles any situation.
- Core gear: Water 2
- Stat priority: Balanced stats
Mechanic Interactions
Understanding how Plague Inc: Evolved's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.
DNA points and bubble popping + Transmission, Symptoms and Abilities trees: Red bubbles on infected countries and orange bubbles on newly infected ones are the main income, and blue cure bubbles slow the research bar. Combined with Transmission, Symptoms and Abilities trees, transmission covers air 1 and 2, water 1 and 2, and the animal vectors, and it is where almost all early dna belongs.
Mutation and devolving + Cure research and country funding: Symptoms mutate on their own, and every mutation raises severity, which raises awareness, which speeds the cure. When paired with Cure research and country funding, rich countries pour money into the cure, so infecting them early is a trade rather than a straight win.
Genes chosen before the run scaling: The gene loadout is set before the first click and cannot be changed mid game. Travel genes Aerocyte, Aquacyte and Teracyte boost air, sea and land spread, Native Biome raises infectivity in your starting country, the environment genes Xerophile, Hydrophile, Rurophile and Urbophile favour specific terrain, and Sympto-Stasis cuts the cost of the full 32 symptom tree from 779 DNA to 283.
Equipment Efficiency
| Equipment | Best Use Case | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Air 2 | Reaching distant countries from a well connected starting nation | The second tier of airborne transmission, and the single most valuable early purchase for a plague starting somewhere with heavy air traffic. |
| Water 2 | Infecting islands before ports close | The naval counterpart to Air 2, and the reason island nations get infected before they close their ports. |
| Cold Resistance 2 | Greenland, Iceland, Canada and northern Russia | Cold climates block infection outright without it, which is what strands runs at Greenland, Iceland and northern Russia. |
| Genetic Hardening 2 | Brutal and Mega Brutal runs where the cure finishes first | Raises the amount of research needed to complete the cure, which is the only lever that directly attacks the losing condition. |
| Total Organ Failure | The final lethality burst once every country is infected | The deadliest single symptom in the game at 25 lethality, well ahead of Hemorrhagic Shock at 15 and Necrosis at 13. |
Location Efficiency
Saudi Arabia (All difficulties, recommended default): The standard opener because it carries heavy air and sea traffic while being hot and arid enough to slow early detection. It also borders several land routes, which means a single well placed plague touches three continents quickly.
India (All difficulties, high population start): Hot, humid, poor and enormous, which makes it a fast infection base with weak healthcare working in your favour. The trade is that wealthy nations stay clean longer, so the cure clock starts later but the islands are further away.
China (All difficulties, balanced start): A huge population with strong air and sea links, useful when you want both infection volume and reach from a single country. Its climate range means resistances matter earlier than in a purely hot start.
South Africa (All difficulties, island focused start): A start with both airports and seaports plus a southern position that reaches the countries most runs leave until last. It is the pragmatic answer when a previous attempt died with Madagascar still grey.
Greenland (Challenge start, expert only): A deliberate challenge start rather than an efficient one. Cold, tiny, isolated and quick to close its single port, it demands Cold Resistance and Water transmission before the plague has produced meaningful DNA.
Mistakes Even Veterans Make
- Evolving a symptom early because DNA is sitting unspent. Symptoms raise severity, severity raises awareness, and awareness funds the cure, so unspent DNA is safer than a premature cough.
- Forgetting island nations until the cure is already at 40 percent. Greenland, Iceland, New Zealand, Madagascar and the Caribbean close ports on panic, and there is no way back in afterwards.
- Skipping Cold Resistance on a hot country start. Saudi Arabia and India both spread beautifully until the plague hits Canada and Russia and simply stops.
- Treating Bio-Weapon like Bacteria. Its automatic lethality gain means the standard infect first plan fails unless Nucleic Acid Neutralisation is bought early.
- Ignoring blue cure bubbles because they give no DNA by default. Popping them still slows research, and with Catalytic Switch equipped they pay 2 to 5 DNA on top.
Pro Quick Tips

- Devolving is priced on an escalating scale, so the cost of cleaning up a mutation rises the longer you leave it. Devolve on sight rather than batching them, particularly with Virus where mutations arrive constantly.
- Start with Virus, switch to Bacteria when ready
- Invest in Air 2 above everything else
- Clear areas in order: Saudi Arabia → India → China → South Africa → Greenland. See our maps guide
- DNA points and bubble popping + Transmission, Symptoms and Abilities trees together are stronger than either alone
