tobspr Games launched shapez 2 in Early Access on 15 August 2024 and shipped the 1.0 build on 23 April 2026. Factories are built on space platforms with three stacked building floors, joined by belts, belt launchers and trains, and everything you produce ends up in the Vortex. There is no combat, no pollution and no resource depletion, only throughput and layout.

Core Mechanics
Three building floors per platform
Each platform holds three stacked floors, with belts ramping between them and Belt Launchers throwing shapes across the gaps between platforms. Milestone 1 grants the second floor, and the third floor is a research upgrade costing 50 research points.
Vortex deliveries and milestones
The Vortex sits at the centre of the hub with twelve three level ports per side, 144 inputs in total, but only four ports per side are open at the start. Milestones ask for large volumes of one specific shape and pay out platforms, new buildings, blueprint points and research points.
Blueprint points and the blueprint library
Blueprints unlock at milestone 2, and blueprint points arrive from milestones in amounts that scale from 2,500 into the hundreds of thousands. Stamping a saved design costs points, which is what separates pasting a proven block from placing a hundred cutters by hand.
Research points and upgrades
Research points come from tasks and operator levels and pay for upgrades such as the third platform floor and additional Vortex ports. They are far scarcer than blueprint points, so spend them on capacity rather than convenience.
Shape layers with pins and crystals
Shapes stack in layers and obey gravity, so a part with nothing underneath it drops. Pin Pushers insert supporting pins beneath the bottom layer, Crystal Generators fill pins and empty quadrants with coloured crystal, and cutting a crystal shatters it.

Belt spaghetti (B-Tier): The unplanned approach: route belts wherever they fit and fix jams as they appear. It clears early milestones quickly and becomes impossible to extend by the fluid and colour mixing stages.
Modular blueprint tiling (S-Tier): Build one platform that makes one thing at a fixed rate, save it as a blueprint, then stamp it as many times as the Vortex demand requires. Blueprints unlock at milestone 2.
Ratio balanced lines (A-Tier): Count machine throughput and match building counts exactly so no belt starves and nothing backs up. Slower to plan, but it makes each platform carry its full rated output.
Train hub logistics (A-Tier): Trains unlock at milestone 5 and move material between distant platform clusters far more cleanly than long belt runs, which turns the map into a set of specialised districts.

Platform floor 1: The ground floor of every platform and where most extraction and early production sits. Everything you build before the first milestone lives here.
Platform floor 2: Granted by milestone 1 alongside the Stacker. It roughly doubles usable space per platform and gives belts somewhere to cross without conflicting.
Platform floor 3: A research upgrade costing 50 research points. It adds a further half again of Vortex slots and lets belts run over two floors instead of weaving around obstacles.
The Vortex: The delivery point at the centre of the hub, with twelve three level ports on each of its four sides. Only four ports per side start unlocked, and shape rotation does not matter on delivery.

Tips That Actually Matter
- Save a blueprint the first time any block works. Rebuilding the same cutter and rotator arrangement by hand is the single largest waste of time in the game, and stamping costs blueprint points you receive in blocks of thousands.
- Push to milestone 1 quickly for the second building floor. Almost every layout problem in the early game is really a space problem, and the second floor doubles what one platform can hold.
- Fix your orientation convention before you build anything permanent. Which quadrant faces north decides whether a stacker joins two halves correctly, and a factory built on two conflicting conventions will fight you forever.
- Send overflow to Trash rather than letting a belt back up. A jammed line stalls every machine behind it, and a single Overflow Splitter into a Trash building keeps the rest of the platform running.
- Plan the third floor upgrade around its 50 research point cost. Research points come from tasks and operator levels rather than raw production, so the upgrade needs to be budgeted rather than stumbled into.
- Switch to trains once you catch yourself running a belt across several screens. Trains unlock at milestone 5 and move material between clusters far more cleanly than a belt chain that has to be maintained along its whole length.
- Remember gravity when designing multi layer shapes. A part with nothing beneath it falls, so Pin Pushers are often the fix for a shape that keeps arriving at the Vortex incomplete.
- Keep crystal work at the end of the line. Cutting a shape that contains crystal shatters it, so any crystal step belongs after the last cutter in that production chain.
- Unlock more Vortex ports before building more production. Only four of the twelve ports on each side are open at the start, and a factory that outproduces its delivery capacity simply queues up.
- Treat the difficulty setting as a design decision. Higher tiers raise milestone requirements substantially, and the experimental Hexagonal mode changes the grid itself, so pick before you invest hours in a layout.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Building everything by hand and never saving blueprints. Blueprints unlock at milestone 2 and the points to stamp them arrive steadily, so manual placement is a self inflicted cost.
- Ignoring shape orientation until a stacker produces the wrong output. Rotation state carries through the whole chain, and diagnosing it after the fact means tracing every belt back to the extractor.
- Letting belts back up instead of trashing overflow. One jammed line idles every machine feeding it, which shows up as a mysterious throughput drop somewhere else entirely.
- Spending research points on convenience before capacity. The third floor and extra Vortex ports change how much you can build, while smaller upgrades only change how comfortable it feels.
- Running belts across the map when trains are available. Milestone 5 unlocks rails specifically because long belt chains become the bottleneck that stalls a mid game factory.
