tobspr Games launched shapez 2 in Early Access on 15 August 2024 and shipped the 1.0 build on 23 April 2026. Factories are built on space platforms with three stacked building floors, joined by belts, belt launchers and trains, and everything you produce ends up in the Vortex. There is no combat, no pollution and no resource depletion, only throughput and layout.
Choosing the right build shapes your entire experience. This guide breaks down every option: what they're good at, what they struggle with, and which one matches your playstyle. For optimized builds with full gear sets, see our builds guide.
Quick Comparison
| Build | Tier | Playstyle | Best Equipment | Beginner Friendly? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Belt spaghetti | B | Use it for the first three milestones, then rebuild before the shape requirements get deep | Cutter | No |
| Main bus | A | Balanced | Rotator | Yes |
| Modular blueprint tiling | S | Solve each problem once at small scale and scale by copying rather than redesigning | Stacker | Moderate |
| Ratio balanced lines | A | Measure the input rate first, then place exactly as many machines as it feeds | Painter | Yes |
| Train hub logistics | A | Put mining far from manufacturing and let the rail network absorb the distance | Belt Launcher | Yes |
New player? Start with Main bus. See our beginner's guide for why.
Belt spaghetti
The unplanned approach: route belts wherever they fit and fix jams as they appear. It clears early milestones quickly and becomes impossible to extend by the fluid and colour mixing stages.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Tier | B |
| Playstyle | Use it for the first three milestones, then rebuild before the shape requirements get deep |
| Best Equipment | Cutter |
| Stat Priority | Speed of construction over everything else |
| Core Gear | Whatever is unlocked, placed wherever it reaches |
| Key Mechanic | Three building floors per platform |
Strengths
- Highest overall performance across all content types
- Use it for the first three milestones, then rebuild before the shape requirements get deep
- Pairs well with Cutter
Weaknesses
- Popular choice, competition for resources
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
Recommended Progression
- Start in Platform floor 1 to learn Belt spaghetti-specific mechanics
- Focus on Three building floors per platform. It's this build's primary system
- Prioritize Cutter as your first major upgrade
- See our full Belt spaghetti build guide for the optimal gear progression
Main bus
Main bus is a strong option in shapez 2 - Factory.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Tier | A |
| Playstyle | Balanced approach |
| Best Equipment | Rotator |
| Stat Priority | Balanced stats |
| Core Gear | Best available |
| Key Mechanic | Vortex deliveries and milestones |
Strengths
- Most versatile, adapts to any situation
- Solid all-around choice
- Pairs well with Rotator
Weaknesses
- Lower peak damage than S-tier options
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
Recommended Progression
- Start in Platform floor 1 to learn Main bus-specific mechanics
- Focus on Vortex deliveries and milestones. It's this build's primary system
- Prioritize Rotator as your first major upgrade
- See our full Main bus build guide for the optimal gear progression
Modular blueprint tiling
Build one platform that makes one thing at a fixed rate, save it as a blueprint, then stamp it as many times as the Vortex demand requires. Blueprints unlock at milestone 2.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Tier | S |
| Playstyle | Solve each problem once at small scale and scale by copying rather than redesigning |
| Best Equipment | Stacker |
| Stat Priority | Blueprint points, then platform count |
| Core Gear | Cutter, Rotator, Stacker, Painter blocks saved as reusable platforms |
| Key Mechanic | Blueprint points and the blueprint library |
Strengths
- Best survivability for learning hard content
- Solve each problem once at small scale and scale by copying rather than redesigning
- Pairs well with Stacker
Weaknesses
- Slower progression speed
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
Recommended Progression
- Start in Platform floor 1 to learn Modular blueprint tiling-specific mechanics
- Focus on Blueprint points and the blueprint library. It's this build's primary system
- Prioritize Stacker as your first major upgrade
- See our full Modular blueprint tiling build guide for the optimal gear progression
Ratio balanced lines
Count machine throughput and match building counts exactly so no belt starves and nothing backs up. Slower to plan, but it makes each platform carry its full rated output.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Tier | A |
| Playstyle | Measure the input rate first, then place exactly as many machines as it feeds |
| Best Equipment | Painter |
| Stat Priority | Throughput per platform above raw building count |
| Core Gear | Matched banks of Cutters, Rotators and Stackers on one floor |
| Key Mechanic | Research points and upgrades |
Strengths
- Excellent in group and cooperative content
- Measure the input rate first, then place exactly as many machines as it feeds
- Pairs well with Painter
Weaknesses
- Less effective solo
- Requires deep game knowledge to use effectively
Recommended Progression
- Start in Platform floor 1 to learn Ratio balanced lines-specific mechanics
- Focus on Research points and upgrades. It's this build's primary system
- Prioritize Painter as your first major upgrade
- See our full Ratio balanced lines build guide for the optimal gear progression
Train hub logistics
Trains unlock at milestone 5 and move material between distant platform clusters far more cleanly than long belt runs, which turns the map into a set of specialised districts.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Tier | A |
| Playstyle | Put mining far from manufacturing and let the rail network absorb the distance |
| Best Equipment | Belt Launcher |
| Stat Priority | Station throughput, then rail layout clarity |
| Core Gear | Rails, stations, loading and unloading platforms |
| Key Mechanic | Shape layers with pins and crystals |
Strengths
- Highest skill ceiling with unique mechanics
- Put mining far from manufacturing and let the rail network absorb the distance
- Pairs well with Belt Launcher
Weaknesses
- Steep learning curve, punishing mistakes
- Requires deep game knowledge to use effectively
Recommended Progression
- Start in Platform floor 1 to learn Train hub logistics-specific mechanics
- Focus on Shape layers with pins and crystals. It's this build's primary system
- Prioritize Belt Launcher as your first major upgrade
- See our full Train hub logistics build guide for the optimal gear progression
Which Build Should You Pick?
For Beginners
Main bus is the clear winner. It's forgiving, teaches core mechanics, and remains competitive into endgame. Follow our beginner's guide for the best first-session experience.
For Maximum Performance
Belt spaghetti is the top pick once you understand the game's mechanics. Pair it with Cutter for the strongest overall setup.
For a Challenge
Train hub logistics offers the highest skill ceiling. It's punishing when misplayed but incredibly rewarding when mastered. Only recommended after you've completed the game with another build.
For Group Play
Ratio balanced lines shines in cooperative content with utility and team support capabilities.
