tobspr Games launched shapez 2 in Early Access on 15 August 2024 and shipped the 1.0 build on 23 April 2026. Factories are built on space platforms with three stacked building floors, joined by belts, belt launchers and trains, and everything you produce ends up in the Vortex. There is no combat, no pollution and no resource depletion, only throughput and layout.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Phase 1: Getting Started (Platform floor 1)

The ground floor of every platform and where most extraction and early production sits. Everything you build before the first milestone lives here.

Level/Difficulty: Milestone 0 onward Key Rewards: Basic production space, extractor placement, the first Vortex deliveries

What to Do in Platform floor 1

  1. Learn Three building floors per platform. Each platform holds three stacked floors, with belts ramping between them and Belt Launchers throwing shapes across the gaps between platforms. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Main bus as your starting build. See our builds guide for why.
  3. Save a blueprint the first time any block works. Rebuilding the same cutter and rotator arrangement by hand is the single largest waste of time in the game, and stamping costs blueprint points you receive in blocks of thousands.
  4. Acquire your first equipment upgrade: Rotator or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand Three building floors per platform fundamentals
  • Main bus selected and functional
  • Platform floor 1 main content cleared
  • Ready for Platform floor 2

Phase 2: Early Game (Platform floor 2)

Granted by milestone 1 alongside the Stacker. It roughly doubles usable space per platform and gives belts somewhere to cross without conflicting.

Level/Difficulty: Milestone 1 onward Key Rewards: Extra building area, cleaner belt routing, easier stacker feeds

What to Do in Platform floor 2

  1. Work on Vortex deliveries and milestones. The Vortex sits at the centre of the hub with twelve three level ports per side, 144 inputs in total, but only four ports per side are open at the start. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Rotator if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. Push to milestone 1 quickly for the second building floor. Almost every layout problem in the early game is really a space problem, and the second floor doubles what one platform can hold.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to Platform floor 3.
  5. Consider whether Belt spaghetti might suit your playstyle better than Main bus.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • Vortex deliveries and milestones integrated into gameplay
  • Rotator acquired
  • Platform floor 2 fully cleared
  • Ready for Platform floor 3

Phase 3: Mid Game (Platform floor 3)

A research upgrade costing 50 research points. It adds a further half again of Vortex slots and lets belts run over two floors instead of weaving around obstacles.

Level/Difficulty: Mid to late game Key Rewards: 1.5 times the Vortex slots, two floor belt transport, dense platform designs

What to Do in Platform floor 3

  1. Master Blueprint points and the blueprint library. Blueprints unlock at milestone 2, and blueprint points arrive from milestones in amounts that scale from 2,500 into the hundreds of thousands. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward Cutter. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
  3. Fix your orientation convention before you build anything permanent. Which quadrant faces north decides whether a stacker joins two halves correctly, and a factory built on two conflicting conventions will fight you forever.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in Research points and upgrades for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • Blueprint points and the blueprint library mastered
  • Cutter acquired or in progress
  • Platform floor 3 fully cleared
  • Ready for The Vortex

Phase 4: Late Game (The Vortex)

The delivery point at the centre of the hub, with twelve three level ports on each of its four sides. Only four ports per side start unlocked, and shape rotation does not matter on delivery.

Level/Difficulty: Entire game Key Rewards: Milestone completion, platforms, buildings, blueprint points, research points

What to Do in The Vortex

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Belt spaghetti or Main bus with optimized gear.
  2. Cutter should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. Send overflow to Trash rather than letting a belt back up. A jammed line stalls every machine behind it, and a single Overflow Splitter into a Trash building keeps the rest of the platform running.
  4. Shape layers with pins and crystals optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into The rail network.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • Cutter upgraded to max
  • The Vortex fully cleared
  • Ready for The rail network

Phase 5: Endgame (The rail network)

Unlocked at milestone 5, rails and trains carry material between distant platform clusters far more efficiently than a long belt chain.

Level/Difficulty: Milestone 5 onward Key Rewards: Long distance throughput, district based factory layouts, less belt sprawl

What to Do in The rail network

  1. The rail network tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Plan the third floor upgrade around its 50 research point cost. Research points come from tasks and operator levels rather than raw production, so the upgrade needs to be budgeted rather than stumbled into.
  3. The endgame loop: run The rail network, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Train hub logistics for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where Shape layers with pins and crystals mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • The rail network fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Building everything by hand and never saving blueprints. Blueprints unlock at milestone 2 and the points to stamp them arrive steadily, so manual placement is a self inflicted cost.
  • Ignoring shape orientation until a stacker produces the wrong output. Rotation state carries through the whole chain, and diagnosing it after the fact means tracing every belt back to the extractor.
  • Letting belts back up instead of trashing overflow. One jammed line idles every machine feeding it, which shows up as a mysterious throughput drop somewhere else entirely.
  • Spending research points on convenience before capacity. The third floor and extra Vortex ports change how much you can build, while smaller upgrades only change how comfortable it feels.
  • Running belts across the map when trains are available. Milestone 5 unlocks rails specifically because long belt chains become the bottleneck that stalls a mid game factory.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Save a blueprint the first time any block works. Rebuilding the same cutter and rotator arrangement by hand is the single largest waste of time in the game, and stamping costs blueprint points you receive in blocks of thousands.
  2. Push to milestone 1 quickly for the second building floor. Almost every layout problem in the early game is really a space problem, and the second floor doubles what one platform can hold.
  3. Fix your orientation convention before you build anything permanent. Which quadrant faces north decides whether a stacker joins two halves correctly, and a factory built on two conflicting conventions will fight you forever.
  4. Send overflow to Trash rather than letting a belt back up. A jammed line stalls every machine behind it, and a single Overflow Splitter into a Trash building keeps the rest of the platform running.
  5. Plan the third floor upgrade around its 50 research point cost. Research points come from tasks and operator levels rather than raw production, so the upgrade needs to be budgeted rather than stumbled into.
