tobspr Games launched shapez 2 in Early Access on 15 August 2024 and shipped the 1.0 build on 23 April 2026. Factories are built on space platforms with three stacked building floors, joined by belts, belt launchers and trains, and everything you produce ends up in the Vortex. There is no combat, no pollution and no resource depletion, only throughput and layout.
shapez 2 - Factory features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.
Area Progression Order
| Order | Location | Difficulty | Key Rewards | Recommended Build |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Platform floor 1 | Milestone 0 onward | Basic production space, extractor placement, the first Vortex deliveries | Main bus |
| 2 | Platform floor 2 | Milestone 1 onward | Extra building area, cleaner belt routing, easier stacker feeds | Main bus |
| 3 | Platform floor 3 | Mid to late game | 1.5 times the Vortex slots, two floor belt transport, dense platform designs | Belt spaghetti |
| 4 | The Vortex | Entire game | Milestone completion, platforms, buildings, blueprint points, research points | Belt spaghetti |
| 5 | The rail network | Milestone 5 onward | Long distance throughput, district based factory layouts, less belt sprawl | Belt spaghetti |
Platform floor 1: Starting Area
The ground floor of every platform and where most extraction and early production sits. Everything you build before the first milestone lives here.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Milestone 0 onward |
| Key Rewards | Basic production space, extractor placement, the first Vortex deliveries |
| Recommended Build | Main bus |
| Key Equipment | Rotator |
What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of Three building floors per platform. This is where you practice without heavy punishment.
- Collect starting resources and your first equipment upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to Platform floor 2.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
Platform floor 2: Early Game
Granted by milestone 1 alongside the Stacker. It roughly doubles usable space per platform and gives belts somewhere to cross without conflicting.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Milestone 1 onward |
| Key Rewards | Extra building area, cleaner belt routing, easier stacker feeds |
| Recommended Build | Main bus |
| Key Equipment | Rotator |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering Vortex deliveries and milestones. It's critical from this point on.
- Farm for Rotator if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in Platform floor 3.
Platform floor 3: Mid Game
A research upgrade costing 50 research points. It adds a further half again of Vortex slots and lets belts run over two floors instead of weaving around obstacles.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Mid to late game |
| Key Rewards | 1.5 times the Vortex slots, two floor belt transport, dense platform designs |
| Recommended Build | Belt spaghetti |
| Key Equipment | Rotator |
What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- Cutter becomes accessible here. Prioritize getting it.
- Master Blueprint points and the blueprint library for the boss encounters.
- Check our boss guide if you get stuck.
The Vortex: Late Game
The delivery point at the centre of the hub, with twelve three level ports on each of its four sides. Only four ports per side start unlocked, and shape rotation does not matter on delivery.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Entire game |
| Key Rewards | Milestone completion, platforms, buildings, blueprint points, research points |
| Recommended Build | Belt spaghetti |
| Key Equipment | Cutter |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- Cutter should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- Shape layers with pins and crystals mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into The rail network.
The rail network: Endgame
Unlocked at milestone 5, rails and trains carry material between distant platform clusters far more efficiently than a long belt chain.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Milestone 5 onward |
| Key Rewards | Long distance throughput, district based factory layouts, less belt sprawl |
| Recommended Build | Belt spaghetti |
| Key Equipment | Cutter |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with Train hub logistics for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order: Platform floor 1 → Platform floor 2 → Platform floor 3 → The Vortex → The rail network. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
- Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your equipment: Some areas favor different equipment types.
- Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
