DICE's Battlefront II covers the prequel, original and sequel eras in one shooter, with 40 player Galactic Assault as the headline mode across 13 maps. The loot crate progression that dominated its 2017 launch was stripped out and replaced by class based Skill Points, and free content ran until the Scarif update in April 2020. It still fills lobbies on Steam, and Instant Action lets you play the whole thing offline against bots.

Combat in STAR WARS Battlefront II rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.

Core Combat Mechanics

1. Battle Points economy

Kills, objective work and supporting teammates all pay Battle Points during a match. Reinforcements are the cheap tier, vehicles cost more, and every hero or villain costs 4,000 points in Galactic Assault regardless of era.

Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.

2. Star Card loadouts

Each trooper class carries three Star Card slots, upgraded with Crafting Parts through Common, Uncommon, Rare and Epic. Upgrade rarity is gated behind class level, so cards follow playtime with that class rather than money.

Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.

3. Class weapon unlocks

Weapons unlock on kill counts with the class that owns them: 50 kills for the first, 200 for the second and 400 for the third. Attachments then unlock through further kills with that specific gun.

Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.

4. Reinforcement units

Enforcers, Aerials and Infiltrators sit between troopers and heroes and are bought mid match with Battle Points. Wookiee Warrior, Clone Commando, Death Trooper and Droideka are the ones that decide crowded chokepoints.

Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.

5. Galactic Assault phases

Galactic Assault is asymmetric attack and defend split into scripted phases, such as the AT-AT advance on Hoth or the droid push through Theed. Attackers who win a phase move up to a new objective set, and the match ends when the clock or the reinforcement pool runs out.

Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.

How These Mechanics Combine

Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:

Battle Points economy + Star Card loadouts

Kills, objective work and supporting teammates all pay Battle Points during a match. When combined with Star Card loadouts, each trooper class carries three star card slots, upgraded with crafting parts through common, uncommon, rare and epic. This combination is the core of every effective build.

Class weapon unlocks + Reinforcement units

Weapons unlock on kill counts with the class that owns them: 50 kills for the first, 200 for the second and 400 for the third. Paired with Reinforcement units, enforcers, aerials and infiltrators sit between troopers and heroes and are bought mid match with battle points. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.

Galactic Assault phases as a Multiplier

Galactic Assault is asymmetric attack and defend split into scripted phases, such as the AT-AT advance on Hoth or the droid push through Theed. Attackers who win a phase move up to a new objective set, and the match ends when the clock or the reinforcement pool runs out. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Galactic Assault phases optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques

Damage Optimization

  1. Match your weapons to your role's stat priorities
  2. Exploit Battle Points economy for maximum damage windows
  3. Chain Star Card loadouts and Class weapon unlocks for combo damage
  4. Use Reinforcement units to create openings

Survivability

  1. Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
  2. Battle Points come from objective work far faster than from kills. Arming a bomb, holding a capture point or reviving a downed teammate pays more than a streak of kills in an open field, which is why Officers reach 4,000 points before anyone else.
  3. Position using Battle Points economy to control spacing
  4. Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort

Boss Combat

Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.

  • Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
  • Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
  • Build preparation: Swap gear and weapons for specific fights when needed

Common Combat Mistakes

  1. Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
  2. Ignoring Star Card loadouts: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
  3. Wrong weapons for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
  4. Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
  5. Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Kamino but will get you killed in Endor.
