Respawn shipped the first Cal Kestis game on 15 November 2019, and it is a much narrower toolkit than the sequel. There are exactly two lightsaber configurations here, single and double-bladed, and three skill trees called Force, Lightsaber and Survival holding 33 skills between them. Difficulty does not pad enemy health: Story Mode, Jedi Knight, Jedi Master and Jedi Grand Master change the parry window and enemy aggression instead, so a boss has the same health bar on every setting. The route runs Bracca, Bogano, Zeffo, Kashyyyk, Dathomir, Ilum and finally Nur, and almost every chest you crack along the way holds a poncho or a lightsaber part rather than a stat.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

A-Tier: Force tree specialist
Force tree specialist is a top-performing option in STAR WARS Jedi: Fallen Order.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |

| Primary Weapon | Single-bladed lightsaber | Cal's default configuration and the one with the tightest parry timing and the strongest single-target damage. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Parry window set by difficulty | The four settings are Story Mode, Jedi Knight, Jedi Master and Jedi Grand Master, and none of them touches enemy health pools. |
How to Play Force tree specialist
Force tree specialist focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Single-bladed lightsaber does the damage and Parry window set by difficulty keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Lightsaber tree duellist
Lightsaber tree duellist is a strong option in STAR WARS Jedi: Fallen Order.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Double-bladed lightsaber | Wide sweeps and a spinning deflect that returns blaster bolts across an arc instead of at a single shooter. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Force, Lightsaber and Survival trees | Cal earns skill points from combat, exploration and Force Echoes, then spends them across 33 skills in three trees. |
How to Play Lightsaber tree duellist
Lightsaber tree duellist focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Pair Double-bladed lightsaber with Force, Lightsaber and Survival trees and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Survival tree bruiser
Survival tree bruiser is a strong option in STAR WARS Jedi: Fallen Order.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Lightsaber Throw | A Lightsaber tree skill that sends the blade out and back for heavy damage at range. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Single and double-bladed configurations | The single blade parries cleanly and thrusts hard, which is what duels against Purge Troopers and the Second Sister reward. |
How to Play Survival tree bruiser
Survival tree bruiser focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Single and double-bladed configurations covers the gap Lightsaber Throw leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential

How to Play Parry first counterattacker
Parry first counterattacker focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: This one leans on BD-1 stim canisters rather than raw numbers, and Force Push is what makes that trade pay off. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge
A-Tier: Double-bladed crowd controller

How to Play Double-bladed crowd controller
Double-bladed crowd controller focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Force Pull and Meditation circles and Force Essence pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Lightsaber tree duellist: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Force tree specialist once you understand core mechanics and have access to Single-bladed lightsaber
- Keep a Survival tree bruiser setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Double-bladed crowd controller for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary weapon first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Change difficulty whenever you like. Because the four settings only alter the parry window, damage taken and enemy aggression, dropping from Jedi Grand Master to Jedi Master for one boss does not weaken that boss's health bar at all.
- Spend your first six or seven skill points in Survival. Superior Blocking and the first health tier keep you alive through Zeffo, and Precision Evade returning Force is worth more than any early Lightsaber skill.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
