Respawn shipped the first Cal Kestis game on 15 November 2019, and it is a much narrower toolkit than the sequel. There are exactly two lightsaber configurations here, single and double-bladed, and three skill trees called Force, Lightsaber and Survival holding 33 skills between them. Difficulty does not pad enemy health: Story Mode, Jedi Knight, Jedi Master and Jedi Grand Master change the parry window and enemy aggression instead, so a boss has the same health bar on every setting. The route runs Bracca, Bogano, Zeffo, Kashyyyk, Dathomir, Ilum and finally Nur, and almost every chest you crack along the way holds a poncho or a lightsaber part rather than a stat.

Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

  • Works in all content types

Cons:

  • Popular pick, resources may be contested

  • Most versatile option
  • Straightforward gearing path
  • Works in all content types

Cons:

  • Lower peak damage than S-tier
  • Needs specific gear to reach full potential

  • Straightforward gearing path

Cons:

Build Progression Path

  1. Start with Lightsaber tree duellist: the most forgiving option for learning the game
  2. Transition to Force tree specialist once you understand core mechanics and have access to Single-bladed lightsaber
  3. Keep a Survival tree bruiser setup for content that keeps killing you
  4. Try Double-bladed crowd controller for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics

Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.

Gearing Tips

  • Invest in your primary weapon first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
  • Change difficulty whenever you like. Because the four settings only alter the parry window, damage taken and enemy aggression, dropping from Jedi Grand Master to Jedi Master for one boss does not weaken that boss's health bar at all.
  • Spend your first six or seven skill points in Survival. Superior Blocking and the first health tier keep you alive through Zeffo, and Precision Evade returning Force is worth more than any early Lightsaber skill.
  • Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
