Breakpoint moved the series from Bolivia to Auroa in October 2019, and the Steam listing under app 2231380 arrived after that original launch with the full run of title updates already applied. Auroa is Jace Skell's private archipelago, the drones his company built now answer to Cole D. Walker and his Wolves, and Nomad starts the game alone after the convoy carrying his team is shot down. The safe ground is Erewhon, a hidden settlement under Twin Falls Mountain in the Mount Hodgson province, run by ex-Marine Mads Schulz and his wife Maria.
Combat in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.
Core Combat Mechanics
1. Gear score and five gear tiers
Every weapon and armour piece carries a gear score and a colour tier: Standard grey, Improved green, Advanced blue, High-End purple and Elite gold. Your overall score is an average of what you have equipped, and it drives the damage bands you sit in against enemies. Colour and score are separate, so a green item at score 90 beats a purple one at 65, and scores continue climbing past 250 in the endgame.
Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.
2. Bivouacs, injuries and stamina
Bivouacs are the campfires of Auroa. Resting heals injuries, clears fatigue, refills rations, lets you change class and applies a timed buff. Away from one, a leg injury makes Nomad limp until you use a bandage, fatigue slows healing and makes you louder, and sprinting downhill in rain will put you on the ground.
Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.
3. Wolves, Sentinel and drone patrols
Sentinel are the contractors garrisoning Skell facilities. The Wolves are Walker's former Ghosts and they react faster, aim better and flank properly. Above both, the Azrael drone sweeps open ground and calls a Wolf patrol with Murmur drones when it finds a target, while Behemoth drones guard communication relays and take EMP grenades or rockets into their exposed weak points.
Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.
4. Classes with techniques and class items
Each class combines one technique with one class item. Assault runs True Grit for recoil control and damage resistance plus a gas grenade, Panther runs Cloak and Run with a spray that hides you from drones, Sharpshooter gets armour piercing rounds and long range proficiencies, and Field Medic gets a healing drone and a deployable medkit with self-revive. Echelon and Engineer were added after launch, and you can switch class at any bivouac.
Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.
5. The Ghost Experience settings
The Ghost Experience update lets you turn the loot game off. Gear score can be disabled entirely, enemy health bars removed, the HUD stripped back, and injury, stamina and ammunition rules made stricter. The presets are only starting points; every rule is an individual toggle, so you can keep weapon progression while removing the floating numbers over enemy heads.
Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.
How These Mechanics Combine
Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:
Gear score and five gear tiers + Bivouacs, injuries and stamina
Every weapon and armour piece carries a gear score and a colour tier: Standard grey, Improved green, Advanced blue, High-End purple and Elite gold. When combined with Bivouacs, injuries and stamina, bivouacs are the campfires of auroa. This combination is the core of every effective build.
Wolves, Sentinel and drone patrols + Classes with techniques and class items
Sentinel are the contractors garrisoning Skell facilities. Paired with Classes with techniques and class items, each class combines one technique with one class item. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.
The Ghost Experience settings as a Multiplier
The Ghost Experience update lets you turn the loot game off. Gear score can be disabled entirely, enemy health bars removed, the HUD stripped back, and injury, stamina and ammunition rules made stricter. The presets are only starting points; every rule is an individual toggle, so you can keep weapon progression while removing the floating numbers over enemy heads. This system amplifies everything else. The better your The Ghost Experience settings optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques
Damage Optimization
- Match your weapons to your role's stat priorities
- Exploit Gear score and five gear tiers for maximum damage windows
- Chain Bivouacs, injuries and stamina and Wolves, Sentinel and drone patrols for combo damage
- Use Classes with techniques and class items to create openings
Survivability
- Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
- Prone camouflage is the most important survival tool in the game and it is not automatic. Going prone in mud, sand or long grass applies a visible camouflage layer that defeats most drone sweeps and delays Wolves detection long enough for a patrol to walk past.
- Position using Gear score and five gear tiers to control spacing
- Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort
Boss Combat
Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.
- Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
- Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
- Build preparation: Swap gear and weapons for specific fights when needed
Common Combat Mistakes
- Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
- Ignoring Bivouacs, injuries and stamina: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
- Wrong weapons for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
- Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
- Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Mount Hodgson but will get you killed in Windy Islands.
