Breakpoint moved the series from Bolivia to Auroa in October 2019, and the Steam listing under app 2231380 arrived after that original launch with the full run of title updates already applied. Auroa is Jace Skell's private archipelago, the drones his company built now answer to Cole D. Walker and his Wolves, and Nomad starts the game alone after the convoy carrying his team is shot down. The safe ground is Erewhon, a hidden settlement under Twin Falls Mountain in the Mount Hodgson province, run by ex-Marine Mads Schulz and his wife Maria.
These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.
Essential Tips
1. Prone camouflage is the most important survival tool in the game and it is not automatic
Prone camouflage is the most important survival tool in the game and it is not automatic. Going prone in mud, sand or long grass applies a visible camouflage layer that defeats most drone sweeps and delays Wolves detection long enough for a patrol to walk past.
2. Bivouacs apply timed buffs as well as healing, and the buff you choose should match the next objective
Bivouacs apply timed buffs as well as healing, and the buff you choose should match the next objective. A stamina buff before a mountain approach and a weapon handling buff before a Behemoth arena are worth more than the default pick.
3. Behemoth drones guard communication relays and cannot be beaten with rifles alone
Behemoth drones guard communication relays and cannot be beaten with rifles alone. Bring EMP grenades to disable the drone briefly, rockets for the exposed weak points, and use the arena's cover pillars rather than trying to outrun it in the open.
4. The Azrael drone is the reason open-ground travel gets you killed
The Azrael drone is the reason open-ground travel gets you killed. When one passes overhead, stop, go prone in cover and wait; if it tags you it will call a Wolf patrol with Murmur support that arrives faster than you can drive away.
5. Gear score is an average of equipped items, so a single low score piece drags the whole number down
Gear score is an average of equipped items, so a single low score piece drags the whole number down. Swapping a low tier item for a higher score one of a worse colour is almost always the right call while you are climbing.
6. Vehicles are loud, fragile and visible from the air
Vehicles are loud, fragile and visible from the air. On Auroa they are best used for covering ground between provinces, then abandoned well short of the objective, since a parked truck outside a base is a detection event on its own.
7. The Ghost Experience toggles are per-rule rather than per-preset
The Ghost Experience toggles are per-rule rather than per-preset. Players who dislike the loot game usually turn gear score off but leave weapon tiers on, which keeps blueprint hunting meaningful while removing the damage bands.
8. Weapon blueprints unlock the weapon permanently for crafting at any bivouac, so tracking down the 416 blueprint at Shark Base in the Seal Islands early is worth the trip even before you can survive the surrounding province

9. Injuries stack and do not heal on their own in the stricter settings
Injuries stack and do not heal on their own in the stricter settings. Carry bandages, and remember that a bivouac is often closer than the objective you were about to attempt with a limp and half a health bar.
10. Switching class costs nothing at a bivouac
Switching class costs nothing at a bivouac. Running Sharpshooter for an approach and switching to Assault before you enter the compound is legitimate, and the game expects you to do it rather than committing to one class for the whole campaign.
Advanced Strategies
Role Optimization
The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.
For Assault (A-Tier):
- Focus on Gear score and five gear tiers combinations for maximum output.
- Core gear: 416
- Stat priority: Offensive stats first
For Panther (A-Tier):
- Versatile approach that handles any situation.
- Core gear: MK17
- Stat priority: Balanced stats
Mechanic Interactions
Understanding how Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.
Gear score and five gear tiers + Bivouacs, injuries and stamina: Every weapon and armour piece carries a gear score and a colour tier: Standard grey, Improved green, Advanced blue, High-End purple and Elite gold. Combined with Bivouacs, injuries and stamina, bivouacs are the campfires of auroa.
Wolves, Sentinel and drone patrols + Classes with techniques and class items: Sentinel are the contractors garrisoning Skell facilities. When paired with Classes with techniques and class items, each class combines one technique with one class item.
The Ghost Experience settings scaling: The Ghost Experience update lets you turn the loot game off. Gear score can be disabled entirely, enemy health bars removed, the HUD stripped back, and injury, stamina and ammunition rules made stricter. The presets are only starting points; every rule is an individual toggle, so you can keep weapon progression while removing the floating numbers over enemy heads.
Weapons Efficiency
| Weapon | Best Use Case | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 416 | General purpose engagements between 50 and 200 metres on any class | The workhorse assault rifle of Breakpoint, with its blueprint held at Shark Base in the Seal Islands. |
| MK17 | Fighting armoured Wolves units and any engagement where two-shot kills matter more than volume | A 7. |
| G28 | Suppressed medium to long range work where a bolt action is too slow between targets | A marksman rifle that fills the gap between assault rifles and full snipers: semi-automatic, suppressible without collapsing in damage, and accurate enough for 300 metre work. |
| HTI | Behemoth weak points, helicopters, and vehicles that need to stop before they reach you | Returning from Wildlands as part of the Survival Series, the HTI is the anti-materiel option and the answer to armoured vehicles and drone weak points. |
| Vector .45 ACP | Panther builds and any interior clearing inside 30 metres | The highest rate of fire submachine gun in the game, with low recoil bought at the cost of accuracy and per-shot damage. |
Location Efficiency
Mount Hodgson (Opening hours, safe at any gear score): The mountain province that holds Twin Falls Mountain and, hidden beneath it, Erewhon. This is the base of operations for the whole campaign: Maria Schulz runs the shop, Mads Schulz leads the Homesteaders, and Sergeant Major Josiah Hill hands out the early objectives.
Smuggler Coves (Early campaign, gear score under 60 is workable): Mountainous and heavily wooded country at the northern end of the main island. The tree cover makes it the friendliest province for learning prone camouflage against Azrael sweeps, because there is almost always something to lie under.
Fen Bog (Mid campaign, gear score roughly 60 to 120): A large eastern region cut apart by rivers and channels, with limited hard cover and very open sight lines across the water. Vehicles struggle here and boats do not, which changes how you approach every objective on its islands.
Sinking Country (Mid to late campaign, gear score roughly 100 to 180): A salt marsh with mangroves at its centre and the Coal Islands off its eastern edge. The mud here is genuinely useful: prone camouflage works well, and the Cold War Airfield inside the region holds one of the more sought after blueprints.
Windy Islands (Late campaign, gear score 150 and above): A chain of fjord islands south of the Seal Islands and south-west of Liberty, with South Cape Station as the only human settlement. Exposed ground, hard wind, very little cover, and consequently one of the least forgiving approaches on the map.
Mistakes Even Veterans Make
- Chasing purple and gold items instead of the gear score number. Colour tier controls perks, not power band, and an Elite gold item 40 points below your average is actively slowing your progression.
- Treating Auroa like Bolivia. The Wolves flank, the Azrael watches from above and the drones do not lose interest, so the loud approaches that worked in Wildlands get punished here far faster.
- Ignoring the bivouac system because it looks like fast travel. Fatigue and injuries carry between engagements, and a player who never rests fights the second half of every session at a real disadvantage.
- Attacking Behemoth arenas with a rifle build. They exist to force you to carry EMP grenades and rockets, and without them the fight is unwinnable regardless of how good your aim is.
- Sticking with one class the whole game. Class changes are free at bivouacs, and the Panther approach into a base followed by an Assault clear inside it is a better plan than committing to either for the whole mission.
Pro Quick Tips

- Start with Panther, switch to Assault when ready
- Invest in 416 above everything else
- Clear areas in order: Mount Hodgson → Smuggler Coves → Fen Bog → Sinking Country → Windy Islands. See our maps guide
- Gear score and five gear tiers + Bivouacs, injuries and stamina together are stronger than either alone
