MADFINGER Games put Gray Zone Warfare into Steam early access on 30 April 2024, dropping three private military companies onto Lamang, a quarantined Southeast Asian island with more than 25 named settlements and installations. You sign with Mithras Security Systems out of Nam Thaven, Crimson Shield International out of Kiu Vongsa, or the Lamang Recovery Initiative out of Pha Lang, then fly to a landing zone by helicopter and either call for pickup with the loot or leave your kit on the dirt. AI patrols do almost all of the killing, so this reads as a PvE extraction shooter first and a PvP one only when two squads want the same building.

This guide covers everything you need: core mechanics, the best characters, weapons worth investing in, location progression, and the tips that actually make a difference.

Core Mechanics

Helicopter insertion to landing zones

Every trip starts with a helicopter ride to a lettered LZ, such as the Delta pads around Fort Narith or the Hotel pads near Midnight Sapphire. Unlocking a closer LZ turns a fifteen minute jungle walk into a two minute approach, which is why LZ unlock tasks are worth doing before anything else.

Vendor tasks and reputation

Handshake, Gunny and Lab Rat give out tasks from your first login, while Turncoat, Banshee and Artisan open later through level and quest gates. Each vendor has reputation tiers that unlock stock, so the bigger backpacks, AK magazines and key cases only appear once you have run their errands.

Limb specific medical system

Damage lands on individual limbs and organs rather than a single health bar. A tourniquet stops a heavy bleed, a splint repairs a fracture, a surgery kit fixes organ damage and a blood bag restores lost volume, and none of those four items substitutes for another.

Full gear loss on death

Dying on Lamang leaves your rifle, plate carrier and backpack on the body where you fell. You respawn at your faction town with only what sat in storage, which is the whole reason experienced players run a cheap AK-74M on task runs and save the built M4A1 for planned trips.

Optic zeroing and bullet drop

Scopes zero at set distances and rounds drop visibly past 200 metres. Reading range off the map grid before the first shot matters more than reaction speed, because AI patrols answer a missed shot with accurate return fire.

Weapons Guide

WeaponWhy It MattersBest For
M4A1The 5.Players who want one rifle that covers every task on the map without swapping loadouts.
MK18A short barrel M4 variant that sacrifices muzzle velocity for handling.Room clearing at Midnight Sapphire, the Tiger Bay mall and any indoor task objective.
AK-74MThe cheap reliable option, mostly bought from Turncoat.Task runs and gear farming where losing the rifle should cost you almost nothing.
Remington M700The bolt action of choice for long shots.Overwatch positions covering Fort Narith walls or open ground between village compounds.
Mosin-NagantThe budget bolt action.Early accounts that want long range killing power before vendor reputation opens the good rifles.

M4A1: The 5.56 workhorse and the most customisable platform on the island, comfortable from iron sight builds up to a 300 metre marksman configuration.

MK18: A short barrel M4 variant that sacrifices muzzle velocity for handling. Sold through Gunny once his reputation opens up, and it snaps between targets faster than anything full length.

AK-74M: The cheap reliable option, mostly bought from Turncoat. It has more muzzle rise than the M4 platform, so it wants a brake and a grip before it feels controlled.

Remington M700: The bolt action of choice for long shots. High penetration ammunition turns it into a one hit answer to armoured LAF soldiers at ranges where a carbine only wounds.

Mosin-Nagant: The budget bolt action. Slow to cycle and awkward to reload, but it hits hard enough that it stays useful long after you can afford better.

Location Progression

LocationLevel RangeKey Rewards
Fort NarithLate game, level 4 armour and a squadMilitary grade weapon parts, high tier armour, task intel
Tiger BayLate game, three or four playersMixed military and high value civilian loot, multiple task objectives
Midnight SapphireMid to late game, close quarters kitValuables, safes, indoor task items
Ban PaMid gameTask items, mid tier gear, an approach route toward Tiger Bay
Nam ThavenLevel 1 onward, safe zoneVendors, storage, starting tasks, helicopter dispatch

Fort Narith: The largest military installation on Lamang and a LAF stronghold. Barracks, armouries and command buildings hold weapon parts, ammunition and task documents, and the walls give defenders sightlines across open approaches.

Tiger Bay: A sprawling coastal city with a mall, a pier and a UNLRA refugee camp. AI density is the highest on the map and both LAF soldiers and local fighters contest it, so approaches from two directions beat a single frontal push.

Midnight Sapphire: A luxury resort of villas and interior corridors served by the Hotel landing zones. Fights collapse to under 20 metres almost immediately, which rewards short barrels and grenades over magnified optics.

Ban Pa: A coastal village held by the Naga Pirates, sitting near the Tiger Bay approach. Smaller than the city but dense enough that a careless walk down the main street ends in crossfire from two buildings at once.

Nam Thaven: The Mithras Security Systems base town in the south, mirrored by Kiu Vongsa in the northwest for Crimson Shield and Pha Lang in the northeast for the Lamang Recovery Initiative. All three hold the same vendors, medical building, water tower and lumberyard, and only your own faction can enter.

Tips That Actually Matter

  1. Do the LZ unlock tasks before anything else. Landing at a pad two kilometres from your objective burns ten to fifteen minutes of real time each way, and that walk is where most solo players get killed by patrols they had no reason to meet.
  2. Treat a two or three drop bleed as an emergency and reach for a tourniquet immediately. Bandages and painkillers do nothing for arterial bleeding, and blood loss is the single most common cause of death for new players who are otherwise winning fights.
  3. Keep a splint and a surgery kit in the backpack even on cheap runs. A fractured leg cuts your movement to a crawl and a damaged organ makes your character cough audibly, which tells every AI within earshot exactly where you are.
  4. Check your zero before the first engagement. Most fights on Lamang open between 100 and 300 metres, and a scope zeroed at 100 will put rounds low enough to miss a standing target at 250.
  5. Loot keys and documents with the same attention you give weapons. Locked rooms hold task items and the better loot spawns, and a key you cannot afford to lose is worth leaving in base storage until the task that needs it.
  6. Watch your carry weight. Filling the backpack with armour plates and rifle parts drops your sprint speed and drains stamina fast, and a slow player crossing open ground between compounds is the easiest target on the island.
  7. You can only squad with players from your own faction, and faction choice fixes which base town you spawn in. Decide with your friends before anyone clicks, because switching later means restarting progress.
  8. Vendor reputation gates the useful items, not just cosmetics. Turncoat sells the largest backpacks at his higher tiers and Artisan opens after the Native Negotiations task, so plan a few deliberate task runs rather than grinding raids at random.
  9. Fight the AI at ranges where they cannot mass on you. LAF soldiers at Fort Narith shoot accurately and flank in groups, so a hedge line at 200 metres is a far better position than the courtyard wall at 30.
  10. Call for extraction earlier than feels comfortable. The helicopter takes time to arrive and the landing zone is loud, so requesting pickup while you still have full health and a clear route beats requesting it while bleeding out behind a rock.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Taking a fully built M4A1 into an unfamiliar area and losing the whole kit to a patrol you never saw.
  • Bandaging a heavy bleed instead of applying a tourniquet, then dying two minutes later in cover.
  • Sprinting down village main streets instead of moving building to building along walls and treelines.
  • Skipping vendor tasks in favour of loot runs, which leaves you locked out of the backpacks and magazines that make loot runs profitable.
  • Fighting Tiger Bay or Fort Narith solo when both are built around multi angle AI density that punishes a single approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gray Zone Warfare PvP or PvE?

Both, with PvE as the default experience. AI factions such as the LAF, the Naga Pirates and local fighters supply most of the combat, and player squads from the other two PMCs share the same island and can engage you.

Do I lose my gear when I die?

Yes. Everything you carried stays on your body and you respawn at your faction town with your storage contents only. There is no insurance system, so plan loadouts around what you can afford to write off.

Which faction should I pick?

Mechanically they are equivalent. The choice sets your base town, Nam Thaven for Mithras, Kiu Vongsa for Crimson Shield, Pha Lang for the Lamang Recovery Initiative, plus your camo colour, and it locks who you can squad with.

Is the game finished?

No. It entered early access on 30 April 2024 and MADFINGER Games has said the full version is years of work away, with weapons, tasks, gear and map areas still being added through updates.

Can I play solo?

Yes, and plenty of tasks are designed for it. Solo play favours bolt action overwatch and cheap kit, because you have nobody to apply a tourniquet to you when a patrol catches you in the open.
