MADFINGER Games put Gray Zone Warfare into Steam early access on 30 April 2024, dropping three private military companies onto Lamang, a quarantined Southeast Asian island with more than 25 named settlements and installations. You sign with Mithras Security Systems out of Nam Thaven, Crimson Shield International out of Kiu Vongsa, or the Lamang Recovery Initiative out of Pha Lang, then fly to a landing zone by helicopter and either call for pickup with the loot or leave your kit on the dirt. AI patrols do almost all of the killing, so this reads as a PvE extraction shooter first and a PvP one only when two squads want the same building.

Boss fights are where Gray Zone Warfare tests everything you've learned. This guide covers strategies for bosses across all areas, organized by progression order. For general combat techniques, see our combat guide.

Fort Narith Bosses

Area difficulty: Easy Recommended level: Late game, level 4 armour and a squad Recommended role: Designated marksman with MK18

Strategy

The first bosses teach core combat mechanics. Focus on learning patterns rather than dealing damage. Every trip starts with a helicopter ride to a lettered LZ, such as the Delta pads around Fort Narith or the Hotel pads near Midnight Sapphire. This is your primary tool here.

Key tips:

  • Don't rush. Learn the attack patterns first.
  • Use Helicopter insertion to landing zones to create safe windows.
  • MK18 is enough to handle everything here.

Tiger Bay Bosses

Area difficulty: Moderate Recommended level: Late game, three or four players Recommended role: Designated marksman with MK18

Strategy

Early game bosses test your understanding of Vendor tasks and reputation. Players who skipped learning this mechanic will hit a wall here.

Key tips:

  • Vendor tasks and reputation is critical for these fights.
  • Farm MK18 upgrades if you're struggling.
  • Consider switching to Designated marksman if your current setup isn't working.

Midnight Sapphire Bosses

Area difficulty: Hard Recommended level: Mid to late game, close quarters kit Recommended role: Point man with M4A1

Strategy

Mid-game bosses are the major skill check. They combine multiple mechanics and punish players who rely on a single strategy.

Key tips:

  • You need both Helicopter insertion to landing zones and Limb specific medical system mastery.
  • M4A1 makes a significant difference. Get it before attempting these.
  • See our combat guide for advanced techniques.

Ban Pa Bosses

Area difficulty: Very Hard Recommended level: Mid game Recommended role: Point man with M4A1

Strategy

Late-game bosses are serious challenges. Build optimization matters as much as mechanical skill.

Key tips:

  • Make sure your build is fully optimized.
  • M4A1 at max upgrade is recommended.
  • Study each boss's attack patterns. Most have 2-3 phases.

Nam Thaven Bosses

Area difficulty: Extreme Recommended level: Level 1 onward, safe zone Recommended role: Point man with M4A1

Strategy

Endgame bosses are the ultimate test. They require mastery of all combat systems and an optimized build.

Key tips:

  • Top-tier build with best-in-slot gear is mandatory.
  • Master every mechanic. See our combat guide.
  • These fights reward patience and pattern recognition above all else.

General Boss Tips

  1. Learn before you fight: Spend your first attempt observing attack patterns. Don't try to win on attempt one.
  2. Match your build: Some bosses favor certain builds over others. Don't be afraid to switch.
  3. Upgrade your weapons: A max-upgraded M4A1 trivializes fights that seem impossible with weaker gear.
  4. Use Helicopter insertion to landing zones: The core combat mechanic is your best defensive tool in every boss fight.
  5. Check the walkthrough: Our walkthrough tells you when you're ready for each boss.
