MADFINGER Games put Gray Zone Warfare into Steam early access on 30 April 2024, dropping three private military companies onto Lamang, a quarantined Southeast Asian island with more than 25 named settlements and installations. You sign with Mithras Security Systems out of Nam Thaven, Crimson Shield International out of Kiu Vongsa, or the Lamang Recovery Initiative out of Pha Lang, then fly to a landing zone by helicopter and either call for pickup with the loot or leave your kit on the dirt. AI patrols do almost all of the killing, so this reads as a PvE extraction shooter first and a PvP one only when two squads want the same building.
Gray Zone Warfare features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.
Area Progression Order
| Order | Location | Difficulty | Key Rewards | Recommended Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fort Narith | Late game, level 4 armour and a squad | Military grade weapon parts, high tier armour, task intel | Designated marksman |
| 2 | Tiger Bay | Late game, three or four players | Mixed military and high value civilian loot, multiple task objectives | Designated marksman |
| 3 | Midnight Sapphire | Mid to late game, close quarters kit | Valuables, safes, indoor task items | Point man |
| 4 | Ban Pa | Mid game | Task items, mid tier gear, an approach route toward Tiger Bay | Point man |
| 5 | Nam Thaven | Level 1 onward, safe zone | Vendors, storage, starting tasks, helicopter dispatch | Point man |
Fort Narith: Starting Area
The largest military installation on Lamang and a LAF stronghold. Barracks, armouries and command buildings hold weapon parts, ammunition and task documents, and the walls give defenders sightlines across open approaches.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Late game, level 4 armour and a squad |
| Key Rewards | Military grade weapon parts, high tier armour, task intel |
| Recommended Role | Designated marksman |
| Key Weapons | MK18 |
What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of Helicopter insertion to landing zones. This is where you practice without heavy punishment.
- Collect starting resources and your first weapons upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to Tiger Bay.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
Tiger Bay: Early Game
A sprawling coastal city with a mall, a pier and a UNLRA refugee camp. AI density is the highest on the map and both LAF soldiers and local fighters contest it, so approaches from two directions beat a single frontal push.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Late game, three or four players |
| Key Rewards | Mixed military and high value civilian loot, multiple task objectives |
| Recommended Role | Designated marksman |
| Key Weapons | MK18 |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering Vendor tasks and reputation. It's critical from this point on.
- Farm for MK18 if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in Midnight Sapphire.
Midnight Sapphire: Mid Game
A luxury resort of villas and interior corridors served by the Hotel landing zones. Fights collapse to under 20 metres almost immediately, which rewards short barrels and grenades over magnified optics.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Mid to late game, close quarters kit |
| Key Rewards | Valuables, safes, indoor task items |
| Recommended Role | Point man |
| Key Weapons | MK18 |
What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- M4A1 becomes accessible here. Prioritize getting it.
- Master Limb specific medical system for the boss encounters.
- Check our boss guide if you get stuck.
Ban Pa: Late Game
A coastal village held by the Naga Pirates, sitting near the Tiger Bay approach. Smaller than the city but dense enough that a careless walk down the main street ends in crossfire from two buildings at once.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Mid game |
| Key Rewards | Task items, mid tier gear, an approach route toward Tiger Bay |
| Recommended Role | Point man |
| Key Weapons | M4A1 |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- M4A1 should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- Optic zeroing and bullet drop mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into Nam Thaven.
Nam Thaven: Endgame
The Mithras Security Systems base town in the south, mirrored by Kiu Vongsa in the northwest for Crimson Shield and Pha Lang in the northeast for the Lamang Recovery Initiative. All three hold the same vendors, medical building, water tower and lumberyard, and only your own faction can enter.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Level 1 onward, safe zone |
| Key Rewards | Vendors, storage, starting tasks, helicopter dispatch |
| Recommended Role | Point man |
| Key Weapons | M4A1 |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with Solo task runner for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order: Fort Narith → Tiger Bay → Midnight Sapphire → Ban Pa → Nam Thaven. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
- Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your weapons: Some areas favor different weapons types.
- Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
