MADFINGER Games put Gray Zone Warfare into Steam early access on 30 April 2024, dropping three private military companies onto Lamang, a quarantined Southeast Asian island with more than 25 named settlements and installations. You sign with Mithras Security Systems out of Nam Thaven, Crimson Shield International out of Kiu Vongsa, or the Lamang Recovery Initiative out of Pha Lang, then fly to a landing zone by helicopter and either call for pickup with the loot or leave your kit on the dirt. AI patrols do almost all of the killing, so this reads as a PvE extraction shooter first and a PvP one only when two squads want the same building.
Your choice of weapons defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.
Weapons Rankings
| Weapon | Tier | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| M4A1 | S | Players who want one rifle that covers every task on the map without swapping loadouts. | The 5. |
| MK18 | A | Room clearing at Midnight Sapphire, the Tiger Bay mall and any indoor task objective. | A short barrel M4 variant that sacrifices muzzle velocity for handling. |
| AK-74M | A | Task runs and gear farming where losing the rifle should cost you almost nothing. | The cheap reliable option, mostly bought from Turncoat. |
| Remington M700 | B | Overwatch positions covering Fort Narith walls or open ground between village compounds. | The bolt action of choice for long shots. |
| Mosin-Nagant | B | Early accounts that want long range killing power before vendor reputation opens the good rifles. | The budget bolt action. |
S-Tier: M4A1
The 5.56 workhorse and the most customisable platform on the island, comfortable from iron sight builds up to a 300 metre marksman configuration.

Best builds using M4A1: Pairs naturally with Point man thanks to how their stat scaling lines up.
A-Tier: MK18
A short barrel M4 variant that sacrifices muzzle velocity for handling. Sold through Gunny once his reputation opens up, and it snaps between targets faster than anything full length.

A-Tier: AK-74M
The cheap reliable option, mostly bought from Turncoat. It has more muzzle rise than the M4 platform, so it wants a brake and a grip before it feels controlled.

Weapons Progression Path
The order you should acquire weapons as you progress:
- Starting gear → Enough to clear Fort Narith
- MK18 → Your first real upgrade, available early
- AK-74M → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
- M4A1 → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
- Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous
Weapons Tips
- Always upgrade your primary weapon before diversifying. One strong option beats three mediocre ones.
- Match your weapons to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
- Do the LZ unlock tasks before anything else. Landing at a pad two kilometres from your objective burns ten to fifteen minutes of real time each way, and that walk is where most solo players get killed by patrols they had no reason to meet.
- Check our tier list for how weapons rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
