MADFINGER Games put Gray Zone Warfare into Steam early access on 30 April 2024, dropping three private military companies onto Lamang, a quarantined Southeast Asian island with more than 25 named settlements and installations. You sign with Mithras Security Systems out of Nam Thaven, Crimson Shield International out of Kiu Vongsa, or the Lamang Recovery Initiative out of Pha Lang, then fly to a landing zone by helicopter and either call for pickup with the loot or leave your kit on the dirt. AI patrols do almost all of the killing, so this reads as a PvE extraction shooter first and a PvP one only when two squads want the same building.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

| Primary Weapon | M4A1 | The 5. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |

How to Play Point man
Point man focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: M4A1 does the damage and Helicopter insertion to landing zones keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Designated marksman
Designated marksman is a strong option in Gray Zone Warfare.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | MK18 | A short barrel M4 variant that sacrifices muzzle velocity for handling. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Vendor tasks and reputation | Handshake, Gunny and Lab Rat give out tasks from your first login, while Turncoat, Banshee and Artisan open later through level and quest gates. |
How to Play Designated marksman
Designated marksman focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Pair MK18 with Vendor tasks and reputation and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Squad medic
Squad medic is a strong option in Gray Zone Warfare.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | AK-74M | The cheap reliable option, mostly bought from Turncoat. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Limb specific medical system | Damage lands on individual limbs and organs rather than a single health bar. |
How to Play Squad medic
Squad medic focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Limb specific medical system covers the gap AK-74M leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Support carrier
Support carrier is a specialized option in Gray Zone Warfare.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Remington M700 | The bolt action of choice for long shots. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Full gear loss on death | Dying on Lamang leaves your rifle, plate carrier and backpack on the body where you fell. |
How to Play Support carrier
Support carrier focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: This one leans on Full gear loss on death rather than raw numbers, and Remington M700 is what makes that trade pay off. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge

| Key Mechanic | Optic zeroing and bullet drop | Scopes zero at set distances and rounds drop visibly past 200 metres. |
How to Play Solo task runner
Solo task runner focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Mosin-Nagant and Optic zeroing and bullet drop pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Designated marksman: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Point man once you understand core mechanics and have access to M4A1
- Keep a Squad medic setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Solo task runner for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary weapon first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Do the LZ unlock tasks before anything else. Landing at a pad two kilometres from your objective burns ten to fifteen minutes of real time each way, and that walk is where most solo players get killed by patrols they had no reason to meet.
- Treat a two or three drop bleed as an emergency and reach for a tourniquet immediately. Bandages and painkillers do nothing for arterial bleeding, and blood loss is the single most common cause of death for new players who are otherwise winning fights.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
