MADFINGER Games put Gray Zone Warfare into Steam early access on 30 April 2024, dropping three private military companies onto Lamang, a quarantined Southeast Asian island with more than 25 named settlements and installations. You sign with Mithras Security Systems out of Nam Thaven, Crimson Shield International out of Kiu Vongsa, or the Lamang Recovery Initiative out of Pha Lang, then fly to a landing zone by helicopter and either call for pickup with the loot or leave your kit on the dirt. AI patrols do almost all of the killing, so this reads as a PvE extraction shooter first and a PvP one only when two squads want the same building.
Choosing the right role shapes your entire experience. This guide breaks down every option: what they're good at, what they struggle with, and which one matches your playstyle. For optimized builds with full gear sets, see our builds guide.

For Beginners
Designated marksman is the clear winner. It's forgiving, teaches core mechanics, and remains competitive into endgame. Follow our beginner's guide for the best first-session experience.
For Maximum Performance
Point man is the top pick once you understand the game's mechanics. Pair it with M4A1 for the strongest overall setup.
For a Challenge
Solo task runner offers the highest skill ceiling. It's punishing when misplayed but incredibly rewarding when mastered. Only recommended after you've completed the game with another role.
For Group Play
Support carrier shines in cooperative content with utility and team support capabilities.
