This Medieval Dynasty tier list ranks every major option by overall effectiveness. Rankings factor in damage output, survivability, versatility, gear requirements, and how well each option scales.
Tier definitions: S = best in class, always a strong pick. A = strong and competitive, minor weaknesses. B = solid but clearly outperformed in most situations. C = viable only for players who enjoy the playstyle.

Equipment Rankings
| Equipment | Best With | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Stone Axe | All ordinary logging, keeping your iron for tools that actually need it. | The first tool you craft and, at roughly 100 durability against the Iron Axe's 500, still the sensible everyday choice. |
| Iron Pickaxe | Sustained mining runs for stone, iron ore, copper and salt. | One of the few tools genuinely worth making in iron, because mining consumes durability fast and stone pickaxes wear out mid-vein. |
| Iron Knife | Hunters and any player running meat, hides and fur as their main income. | Skinning and gathering tool, and another of the ones worth the iron. |
| Wooden Spear | The first in-game year, before Survival technology opens better options. | Craftable from the earliest hours out of raw sticks. |
| Iron Crossbow | Late game hunting of boar, deer and bear where a missed shot costs a chase. | The high end of the ranged line, made at the Smithy. |

Equipment Analysis
Stone Axe: The first tool you craft and, at roughly 100 durability against the Iron Axe's 500, still the sensible everyday choice. Lower tiers generally give better durability per unit of resource spent, so the cheap axe is not a downgrade for routine chopping.
Iron Pickaxe: One of the few tools genuinely worth making in iron, because mining consumes durability fast and stone pickaxes wear out mid-vein. Crafted at the Smithy once Production technology unlocks it.
Iron Knife: Skinning and gathering tool, and another of the ones worth the iron. Better knives raise the yield you pull off each carcass, which compounds across a hunting-based economy.
Wooden Spear: Craftable from the earliest hours out of raw sticks. It kills small game reliably and can take a boar if you commit, which makes it the bridge between starvation and a working hunting lodge.
Iron Crossbow: The high end of the ranged line, made at the Smithy. Slower to reload than a bow and much more forgiving on aim, which matters against the larger animals in the Valley.
Meta Analysis
The current meta in Medieval Dynasty centers on Four technology tracks and Six personal skills. Builds that leverage both systems outperform those that focus on only one. Our combat guide explains these interactions in depth.
What's strong right now:
- Lumberjack with Stone Axe is the benchmark. Everything else is measured against it.
- Villager professions and building assignment builds are gaining ground as players find new combinations.
- Farmer remains essential for learning hard content. See the boss guide.
What's underrated:
- Hunter is consistently overlooked despite being the most flexible option.
- Iron Knife offers excellent performance for its investment level.
What's overhyped:
- Pure Innkeeper builds. High ceiling but the consistency isn't there for most players.
Quick Picks by Situation
